2. What is the media text?
A media text could include
• Magazines
• Newspapers
• Websites
• Films
• TV
The one we have analysed is a clip from a TV
Drama.
3. CamSamC
• In this clip it has a close up shot of the two
men fist bumping each other (informal) which
shows that men can actually support and
respect the younger generation.
• There is a two shot in this clip which shows
that they are talking to each other.
• There is also a long shot of the young man
which shows that he is isolated from the rest
of the prisoners.
4. MES
• Gesture – the fist bump gesture signifies the
respect the two men show for each other
• Facial expression and body language – the
younger man clearly looks lost and
intimidated , making what the older man is
doing seem more caring
• Costume – both of them are wearing similar
costumes, putting them on the same level
5. EDITING
• Continuity editing- creates a sense of reality,
proving that not all middle aged men are the
same, despite being in prison.
• Pace- a slow to medium pace, again
emphasising the realism of the events
• Screen time – when both characters are
talking to each other, they both have the same
amount of screen time, showing they are of
similar levels of importance
6. SOUND
• The dialogue shows us that he is looking out
for the young man which shows that middle
aged men can actually look out for the
younger generation.
• The ambient sound shows that they are in a
prison making the middle aged man act more
respectful.
7. LINK
• This representation of a middle aged man
challenges the stereotype the middle aged
men have on TV. Rather than being the
typical, sensible male, or a man who’s going
through a midlife crisis, we see him looking
out for the younger character, showing that
the two generations are not always at odds
with each other.
8. Reasons for this representation?
The reasoning behind this representation could
be to prove that not all middle aged men stick to
the same stereotype, and they can break out
and challenge the typical expectations.
9. How might this representation effect
the audience?
It might make the audience
• Realise that stereotypes can be challenged
and are not always true.
10. Who produced the representation?
‘Criminal Justice’ was produced by the BBC, so
that means it was the BBC and the writers of
Criminal Justice (Peter Moffat) who produced
these representations.
