1. Evaluation Question 3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media productand why?
A film distributor very important as it is responsible for the marketing of the film. They also
organise the release date and method by which a film is to be displayed/made available for
viewing, ifthat is for home viewing or theoretically. The distribution company are responsible
for getting films into cinemas, onto DVD’s and BluRays, also onto ITunes which will allow the
filmto sell better. The company also decides and organises when the filmwill be shown once
it is released and where the film will be shown.
A few examples of film distributors would be:
-Walt Disney Pictures
-Warner Bros
-Sony Pictures
-20th Century Fox
-Paramount Pictures.
-Universal Studios
Our film‘Lethal Secret’ is focused around males who are over 35 and secondarily males under
35. After researching our demographics, I decided that our film is more mainstream than
niche and therefore would need a major distributor due to the genre that it is. As our film is
action, I thought using a major distributor would advertise our film more which will get more
people attracted and intrigued to it.
If I had the choice, I would choose 20th Century Fox due to all the films that have been
distributed. For example Man on Fire and Taken which are films that are similar to Lethal
2. Secret, they have alsodistributed Deadpool, X-Men and The Wolverine, all of which are action
films, however they have distributed films other than action. For example, Rio 2 and Ice Age
which are all animation. It is one of the “Big Six” major film studios with plenty of success.
Films such as Avatar which was released in 2009, the box office gross was $760,507,625.
Titanic also was very successful with a box office gross of $658,672,302 in 1999.
There are a many films that have a small budget however were really successful such as, The
Purge which budget was $3 million and the revenue $89 million. Saw also became very
successfulwitha budget of $1.2 million and revenue of $103 million. Due to the success, there
have been 7 films altogether of Saw. The Full Monty was also a huge success with the budget
being $3.5 million and the revenue was $257.8 million.
As our genre is more mainstream than niche, we would expect our film to be shown in
multiplex cinemas rather than independent art houses. Also, as our primary target audience
are males over 35 and our secondary target audience are males under 35, we thought
multiplex cinemas would be more beneficial for our film as it is a wide range of people would
be more suitable to be shown is much more bigger places. Action is a very popular genre, this
is another reason why small, independent art houses aren’t very practical due to the success
of other action films that have been made.
Marketing is very important as you want your film to become noticeable for the public. This
means creating adverts and spreading them around so people are able to see them. When it
comes to marketing, I would want it to be spread perhaps globallyor nationally and this would
be beneficial for us as more people would know about it and would intrigue people to watch
it. The reason why we I wouldn’t want it to be spread locally is because it is again, a
mainstream genre. If the genre was more niche, then it would be more appropriate for the
filmto be spread locally. I would definitely put some posters around cinemas so more people
will notice them and be attracted to it. Also, producing a few trailers to be displayed on social
media such as Twitter and Facebook and websites such as YouTube would be a good idea as
people use these sites in everyday life, this would mean a lot more people will see it.
