ASSIGNMENT #2
Through an essay, explain the similarities and differences of the following
sets:
1. Early Filipino beliefs and forms of worship in Luzon and Visayas.
Among the peoples of Luzon, early Filipino beliefs and forms of devotion,
The Visayas and Mindanao are quite similar, however they differ and alter as
time passes. In Animism was practiced in portions of Luzon and Visayas.
Animism is the concept that various objects, places, and creatures have distinct
spiritual properties. It is the oldest and most primordial form of belief, with
people identifying their world with spirits rather than deities. The spirits in
question are known as diwata. Ancient Filipinos also practiced mysticism
through the usage of spirits, which was known as shamanism another primitive
form of occult practice. Special people are required to wield this power.
Babaylan were required; these persons were the equivalent of shamans, and
they were Babaylans are the principal link between the spiritual and physical
realms, and they frequently communicate with them. the spirits to ask for favors
in exchange for the ability to utilize their extraordinary abilities. The villagers
offer animal or human sacrifices to the spirits. Most often, favors, Ancient
Filipinos blamed bad and evil spirits for their illnesses, which would constantly
be concentrated around health. As a result, the job of the babaylan was critical in
preventing illness or catastrophe. Filipino societies. Mindanao, on the other
hand, practices an early version of Islam. This is a relatively new alien religion to
the Philippines. As time passes, Islam evolves. Because of adaptability,
Christianity is currently practiced across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao that we
have carried from the colonization of distant places and continue to evolve.
2. Perspective of the Spanish religious (e.g. Chirino and Plasencia), and
laymen (Loarca and Morga) on the early Filipino spiritual traditions.
Chirino and Morga's perspectives on early Filipino spiritual traditions are
interesting. Almost identical to the Philippines, where people worship the devil,
Bathala, the sun and moon, and animals. spirits, etc. without being aware of the
existence of a genuine God They both see the world in the same way. The man
and woman arrived in two sections, each with a different name. Also, They share
the same belief in sacrifices and offerings for the Bathala, war, sorrow, and
sickness. Some went to a cave or a secret location. Houses to make those several
offers, and Chirino and Morga also recounted the early stages of the process.
Filipino religion is more barbaric and filled with blindness and the devil. Because
of the activities that Filipinos were involved in previously, they fooled the early
Filipinos.
2. Filipinos, according to Morga, believe in the "redemption of souls imprisoned in
the inferno." They also invoked their ancestors and the dead, claiming to see
them, as previously reported. And get solutions to their questions." This is
similar to the Chirino’s concept, where the Devil interacts with them through
their idols or anitos, pretending to be dead guy whom people adore; and he
frequently assumes the role of priest himself, for the sacrifice's brief duration,
and causes him to say and do things that overwhelm and humiliate him frighten
the onlookers.
Morga and Chinitos have the same premise as Plasencia, where there are
sacrifices were made, idols were adored, temples were worshiped, and so on.
Plasencia, on the other hand, have a broad vision and a fresh notion about what
she wants to do with the temple called "simbahan," a place of adoration. They
built it in order to provide shelter for the gathered crowd. Which Plasencia
acknowledge Bathala as a "all-powerful" or "all-creator". Plasencia also has a
different concept of sacrifice, with the reasons for doing so being "whatever
personal matters there may be, the recovery of a sick person, the prosperous
voyage of those embarking on the sea, a good harvest in the sown lands,
favorable results in wars, a successful delivery in childbirth, and a happy
outcome in married life." for the benefit of their ancestors.
3. Spanish primary sources and native traditions (e.g. Bicol creation story)
There are only a handful of primary sources
