2011 FUM Summer Mission Project
1. The FUM 2011 Summer Mission Project Kids for Kids
2. Friends Theological College Located near the equator in Kaimosi, Kenya, there is a college whose purpose is to train pastors and chaplains who then will serve in some of the 2000 Friends Churches and/or some of the 230 Friends High Schools and/or some of the 1200 Friends Primary Schools that exist in Kenya. Some students may serve as pastors in other countries such as Rwanda, Congo, Tanzania and Uganda. FTC is the only Quaker theological college in Africa. It is an important ministry of Friends United Meeting and needs your support. This summer we encourage you to support our “KIDS” for “KIDS” project to start a goat herd at FTC.
3. WHY? In the accreditation process for Friends Theological College, one requirement is that 50% of the operating fund money comes from African sources. Currently, Friends United Meeting sends about 75% of the funds from North American Friends. We don’t want Friends to stop sending money but instead invest in capital projects that can be used to enable students to earn and pay their own fees.
4. Students need work projects to earn their tuition fees. Students already work on campus to help pay for their fees as Library & book shop clerks, gardeners, landscaping, housekeeping and in the kitchen. But with a growing student population, which now stands at 91, there are jobs needed for more students.
5. What projects do they have now? Production of Cooking Stoves and Briquettes for Fuel A Dairy Herd of ten cows to produce milk for the kitchen and for sale
6. And….. A Green house for growing plants and produce for sale A Dress Making Shop
7. FTC would like to add a goat herd so students who care for them can sell the milk and the meat.
8. What is needed? The $10,000 goal includes female goats, at least one male goat, fencing (to keep the goats in their own area and out of others), a night watchman, watering trough, feed storage, and other start up costs. Asante Sana (Thank you very much!)
9. Update as of October 1, 2011 No KIDDING!!! We have so far received over $17,000 for this project! Our donors are so generous! So, beyond what is needed for the goats, their fencing, water trough, etc., the extra funds will be used to install solar security lights. Electricity supply is inconsistent, so energy from the sun (and the SON) will a great blessing! May we say it again? ASANTE SANA!
