unique culture
I would first like to thank all of you for this opportunity. I’ve learned so much and have developed a love for marketing and especially for this agency. My time at TMA has felt like a wild ride, so I want you guys to hop in the car and follow my journey with me.
as we flip through this deck, we'll make a few different stops
first we’ll define culture because when I first got here I didn’t have a totally clear sense of what culture meant
then we’ll get specific and discuss what I discovered about TMA’s culture
next we’ll find out what really separates TMA from other agencies
and finally I’ll recap for you what I learned throughout my journey at TMA
So, since my briefing last Monday, I’ve met with almost 30 different individuals throughout the agency, and what I asked each of them was, “When I say the word culture, what comes to mind for you?”
And amazingly, almost everyone told me the same thing. They all said something along the lines of, ‘its awesome,’ ‘it’s laid-back,’ or ‘it’s fun, we’re all friends.’
But the fascinating thing about it was that despite the similar answers I was hearing from so many different people, everyone had their own way of saying it.
This really resonated with me because the more people I met, and the better idea I got of what constitutes TMA’s culture, the more I realized how much the people at TMA reflect the culture. Everyone in this agency is similar, they have similar interest, desires, and motivations, but at the same time everyone is very different, and walking into Ali Delzell’s office is a totally different experience from walking into Alice Case’s office. During my adventure at TMA, I’ve come to find that this place works as well as it does because of the culture and the people.
now let’s get this show on the road - first let’s talk about culture in general
when I started asking people what culture means to them,
conrad pointed out for me, culture is a loose word. so let’s define it
read
read
culture is the beliefs, customs, arts, ways of life of a certain people but
lets focus in on this third definition
read
so basically, the way we do things here
let’s get a little more specific, what’s TMA’s culture?
TMA’s culture is built on a simple premise
furthermore, TMA’s purpose is to
having said that, take a moment to read through some testimonials from people around the office and really get a feel for how the culture affects them
but Chris Anderson really hit the nail on the head when he says, history is invaluable to culture. so let’s think about history for a second, history is our past, what happened before now, where we come from, how we got started..
so where does our culture come from?
well, here at TMA, it started with these five guys. back when it was just ray and brad, they constituted TMA’s culture. so it’s these guys, ray, brad, dan, jeff, who were here from the beginning, and are still here that continue to influence the culture and make this place what it is
and many others will agree with this
that our consistent leadership
trickles down throughout the agency and defines all of us
where have we been so far? we defined culture, and we defined more specifically tma’s culture, so now let’s discuss what separates us from other agencies
read
leigh says,
read
the people at TMA have this big idea mindset where no idea is impossible, so heck I hear we want to send someone to space!
that mindset in turn affects our work because we create amazing things from these huge ideas and we land big clients because of that
so from our people and our work emerges this incredible, unique culture that is showcased at our cultural events
but back to the question
read
first it’s the people
again, we are go-getters, we have big ideas, we're always looking for opportunities, and as Leigh says, you just don’t find that at many other agencies
our people embody these traits
second, it’s our work that makes us different
we work with some huge corporations
so what is our job for those clients?
it’s coming up with the next big idea that will change the way our clients think
back to Leigh’s quote, because of our big idea mindset and our optimistic culture, the sky is the limit here
what does that mean for us?
it means we can achieve big things, and land big clients
finally, what really shapes TMA and separates us from other agencies is our cultural events
from my interviews with employees, mistake at the lake seems to be a crowd favorite
I can only imagine the fun had at them
events for the competitor in you
and events for the rock star in you
to name a few others
and also, PechaKucha Night, which I had the opportunity to attend and witness first hand just how amazing and fun TMA’s culture is
now that we’ve discovered what makes TMA different, we’ll move on to our last stop, and I’ll recap my journey for you
first, i discovered what culture means
then I discovered how TMA got it’s unique culture
and finally I learned that the people, the work, and the events are what make TMA so unique and different
