SPE was founded as a global professional Society in 1942 Like many technical societies, our mission is to advance technologies for plastics and polymers to better our lives Today, SPE works in many areas. We have 18,500 members in 70 countries worldwide. Many SPE groups in Europe and Asia have been around for more than 25 years. There are many national organizations for plastics, but there is only one global technical organization for our industry – SPE. Membership includes participate through both technical and local organizations within SPE, we call them “Technical Divisions” and “Sections”
Most of our members work for plastics companies, only about 7% of SPE members are from academic institutions or are students Many are in management, marketing and sales, in addition to being in R&D, design and production SPE members include a very influential group of key decision makers and influencers within their companies
SPE likewise represents the entire value chain for plastics, making us a unique place to meet and network with both colleagues and customers While our goal is to provide forums for technical review and discussion, networking is an obvious benefit of membership.
In addition to covering the entire value chain, we also touch many industries and markets for plastics. SPE members can discover innovations and developments made in one area, and apply them to other areas. Such broad exposure to so many experts in a wide number of industries is also valuable when developing new markets for your products, or managing your career.
This also translates into networks of many companies – large, medium and small – all over the globe. Access to key personnel within these companies through SPE membership is important to developing your own professional networks
At our heart, we offer the best peer-reviewed, unbiased technical information on plastics available – period. Much of this is done online through our: Online Technical Database which includes thousands of peer-reviewed papers delivered at SPE conferences Online access to over 40-years of juried technical articles from SPE’s journals Polymer Engineering & Science, and Polymer Composites Weekly webinars that can be accessed either live for an online interactive experience, or in a recorded format.
SPE has a host of technical publications – all of them peer-reviewed for quality of content. They include: Plastics Engineering magazine - Free with membership Polymer Science & Engineering - Free online access with membership Polymer Composites - Free online access with membership Journal of Vinyl & Additive Technology - subscribers only (quarterly) SPE Tech Focus e-Newsletter - Free with membership SPE Website – www.4spe.org - Full access free with membership SPE Books and Conference Proceedings - Special discounts to non-SPE published works when purchased through SPE – Hanser, Wiley, etc.
In addition to publishing, technical conferences form the backbone of SPE’s value proposition. Bringing members together to present and discuss advances in plastics is part of our central mission. SPE runs between 20-30 conferences a year. Almost one-third of those are now outside the U.S., and that number is growing. In Europe, we have regular bi-annual conferences for Thermoforming, Additives & Colour and Medical. In 2009, we will be introducing a more comprehensive industry-wide conference called EUROTEC! 2008 saw SPE’s first conference in China, and SPE has had conferencing and activities in India for more than 20 years. These are important industry events to discover new theoretical and practical applications in plastics, as well as opportunities to network.
SPE has a job board, but it has much, much more than that. As a member you should: Proactively promote yourself through resume posting. Read up on articles and white papers on career management, job searching, and other workplace-related issues Get special services if you are unemployed Use SPE’s online member directory to help make connections in prospective companies Use SPE events and online networking tools to meet prospective employers, or hear directly from a trusted SPE member about their experience working for a prospective company SPE will soon be adding new mentoring programs for young professional members, but also for older members who want help from younger engineers in using new tools and techniques – it goes both ways.
SPE also believes that we need to give to get. In 2007, SPE gave away over $150,000 in scholarships and grants to students and institutions. We support educational outreach in science and math to young children to spark an interest in plastics and chemistry that we hope will last their whole lives. We ask that each member contribute something of their time or money to help build an interest in how plastics can be used to better the human condition, and have a series of internationally recognized awards programs to honor those in our industry who have served human kind with their inventions and businesses in plastics.
Division membership is included in your base fee. For modest additional fees, you can join as many divisions as you want such as: Injection Moulding, Extrusion, Medical Plastics, Thermoforming, Additives and Colour, Mould Making etc.,
Becoming a member gives you obvious access to a lot of technical information and networking opportunities But to really get full value, you need to give to get These are just some examples of how being an active members of SPE can help you and your company Remember that SPE is also a way to give back to your community and industry [TALK ABOUT HOW YOU BECAME INVOLVED AND HOW SPE HAS HELPED YOU]
