Introduction:
Green Building:-
 “A green building is one which
uses less water, optimizes
energy efficiency, conserves
natural resources, generates
less waste and provides
healthier spaces for occupants,
as compared to a conventional
building.”
3
4
Green Construction:-
 Green construction is an attempt to build responsibly, reduce
waste, and help preserve the environment. It is an “earth-
friendly” alternative to the construction process.
Green Building Construction:-
 The green building construction process involves the
“Planning, Design, construction, and operations of buildings
with several central, foremost considerations: energy use,
water use, indoor environmental quality, material section and
the building’s effect on its site.”
Objectives of Green Building Construction :-
 To understand the concept of Green Building Construction.
 To understand the difference between Normal Building and
Green Building.
 To evaluate the different Green Building Construction
Techniques.
 To study the property and use of various Green Building
Construction materials.
 To analyse Green Building Construction.
5
Scope of Study:-
 The Green building concept which is very cost efficient in
various ways like light bills, gas bills and water bills.
 Materials used in green construction are renewable and the
materials remain in excess are used for making different items
like furniture etc.
 It is a method which uses natural materials, hence saving
huge amount of energy and depletion of resources.
 Looking at current environmental conditions, it is right time to
start using green construction rather than normal construction
method.
 Analysis of Green Building Construction in central Gujarat
region.
6
Why Do We Need Green Building Construction?
 We are a country of 1.2 Billion People and counting …
 31% percent of Indian population lives in Urban Areas
 700% increase in commercial energy consumption in the last
four decades and the numbers are growing ….
 Energy consumption in India will touch 4 trillion units by 2030
 There is a shortage of average 225 million litre water per day in
major Indian Cities, and an alarming 21 Indian cities are
estimated to run out of water by 2030
Startling facts, aren’t they? Well, undoubtedly, Green Building
Construction presents one big solution to this unsustainable
growth. By now we all know, a green building is a structure which
is designed, built, renovated, operated, or reused in an
environmentally friendly and resource-efficient manner.

A WAY TO GO SUSTAINABLE:
IDENTIFYING DIFFERENT
MEANS & NEED TO GO GREEN
IN THE SECTOR OF
CONSTRUCTION WORLD
The rapidly evolving green construction movement in India is successfully
proving the yield of substantial benefit to environment and economy.
Going green seems to be the only major natural corollary and sole remedy to
overcome the environmental degradation, depleting energy sources.
The green development need a great interest of government and builders too
to attain the green agenda and awareness at mass level regarding urgency
of go green would initiate the green development at mass level.

PERFORMANCE AND RATING
OF RESIDENTIAL GREEN
BUILDING
The final rating system for small residential building shows that people are
mainly focused towards conservation & reuse of water and energy
optimization because it is directly related to their daily usage and cost of
living.
To achieve sustainable development, certain mandatory criteria must be
followed to achieve good economic, environmental and social system.
Also using the renewable materials, utilization of the solar energy, rain water
harvesting system and water reuse considering geo graphical condition of
the area where green building to be build.

SELECTION OF MATERIALS
FOR GREEN CONSTRUCTION:
A REVIEW
It can be concluded that there are various materials which can be adopted
for green construction, but we need to select the material which may be
renewable, and causes less harm to environment.
The materials chosen must increase energy efficiency of the structure.
A code for the selection criteria for the green material if being developed will
help in making the complex issue easy for the common people. This way we
can save the environment as well as make the efficient use of economy as
well as resource.
10
Green building achieving techniques:-
 The critical success factors to achieve green building can
generally fall into 3 categories:
1. Technological
2. Managerial
3. Cultural/ Behaviour
1. Technological
 Utilization of renewable energy technological innovations
has been advanced for achieving green building
objectives and accreditation.
 The common renewable energy resources used in
buildings include: solar heat water, solar PV, small
scale wind turbine, geothermal heat pump, etc.
11
 The utilization of renewable energy plays a crucial role to
achieve (Net) zero energy building . The utilization of solar
desiccant cooling system helps to save as much as 60%
of energy related cost . Therefore, the building integrated
renewable energy has become a crucial component of
green building design and development .
 However, the cost, maintenance, and operation of
renewable energy system still present significant
challenges to implement these technological innovations in
green buildings.
2. Managerial
 There are multiple managerial aspects of green buildings,
i.e. project level and company level .
12
 At project level ,LEED providing green building related
continuous education and training opportunities to
employees, and engagement of external stakeholders.
 At company level, the implementation of environmental
management system (EMS) help to save 90% of energy
consumption, reduce 63% of C&D(Construction and
demolition) waste, reduce 70% of water consumption, lower
20% of accident rate and 80% of quality complaints.
3. Behaviour/Cultural
 The behaviour and cultural factors are also crucial for green
building developments . Therefore, it is critical to raise the
level of awareness of all stakeholders on concepts of
sustainable development and green buildings.
13
 There are a large number of social and psychological related
barriers to the implementation of green buildings such as
obstacles faced by the green building movement are no longer
primarily technological and economical.
 Residents prefer to pay more on energy efficiency measures
than other green building attributes such as water efficiency,
indoor air quality and noise control. Such attitude and behaviour
of end users play a critical role in promoting green buildings.
 Therefore, some education or even government campaign could
be an effective approach to raise residents' awareness of
sustainability issues and willingness to pay for green building
features.

  • 10. Sr. No. Authors Publication, Year Literature Title 3. Geeta Mehta Amit Mehta Bidhan Sharma IOSR Journal of Mechanical and Civil Engineering (IOSR-JMCE), Volume 11, Issue 6 Ver. III (Nov- Dec. 2014), PP 80-83 SELECTION OF MATERIALS FOR GREEN CONSTRUCTION: A REVIEW It can be concluded that there are various materials which can be adopted for green construction, but we need to select the material which may be renewable, and causes less harm to environment. The materials chosen must increase energy efficiency of the structure. A code for the selection criteria for the green material if being developed will help in making the complex issue easy for the common people. This way we can save the environment as well as make the efficient use of economy as well as resource. 10
  • 11. Green building achieving techniques:-  The critical success factors to achieve green building can generally fall into 3 categories: 1. Technological 2. Managerial 3. Cultural/ Behaviour 1. Technological  Utilization of renewable energy technological innovations has been advanced for achieving green building objectives and accreditation.  The common renewable energy resources used in buildings include: solar heat water, solar PV, small scale wind turbine, geothermal heat pump, etc. 11
  • 12.  The utilization of renewable energy plays a crucial role to achieve (Net) zero energy building . The utilization of solar desiccant cooling system helps to save as much as 60% of energy related cost . Therefore, the building integrated renewable energy has become a crucial component of green building design and development .  However, the cost, maintenance, and operation of renewable energy system still present significant challenges to implement these technological innovations in green buildings. 2. Managerial  There are multiple managerial aspects of green buildings, i.e. project level and company level . 12
  • 13.  At project level ,LEED providing green building related continuous education and training opportunities to employees, and engagement of external stakeholders.  At company level, the implementation of environmental management system (EMS) help to save 90% of energy consumption, reduce 63% of C&D(Construction and demolition) waste, reduce 70% of water consumption, lower 20% of accident rate and 80% of quality complaints. 3. Behaviour/Cultural  The behaviour and cultural factors are also crucial for green building developments . Therefore, it is critical to raise the level of awareness of all stakeholders on concepts of sustainable development and green buildings. 13
  • 14.  There are a large number of social and psychological related barriers to the implementation of green buildings such as obstacles faced by the green building movement are no longer primarily technological and economical.  Residents prefer to pay more on energy efficiency measures than other green building attributes such as water efficiency, indoor air quality and noise control. Such attitude and behaviour of end users play a critical role in promoting green buildings.  Therefore, some education or even government campaign could be an effective approach to raise residents' awareness of sustainability issues and willingness to pay for green building features. 14
