4. Bicycle to Vehicle Communication Systems
Scott Kasin
Trek Bicycle, Director of Electronics
5. Tome has partnered with the cycling companies and automotive
companies to create bicycle-to-vehicle (B2V) safety products.
Unlike existing cycling products, we focus on communication with the
car. Our technology works on existing bicycle products for all cyclists.
We plan to license the software technology to the cycling and
automotive companies based on open industry standards.
B2V Mission: Safer Roads for Cyclists
8. B2V Vulnerability Mapping
Create Cyclist Vulnerability Maps Based on Known Factors
Imagine map data specific to cycling vulnerabilities
9. B2V
Objectives and Key Results for 2019
Wireless
• 5G - C-V2X - Engage with 5GAA officially.
• Bluetooth – Shows promise for VRU. Standards are pre-
competitive, auto applications remain competitive /
proprietary.
• SAE Standards - Continue developing the PSM with
CAMP/USDOT. Engage with SAE Micromobility Working
Group.
• Device Dynamics – Detroit workshop scheduled 08/14
w/global OEM presence to define the solution constraints.
Pre-competitive - CAMP led with CAMP OEM members
Objective: Define Wireless Roadmap for B2V Production
10. B2V
Objectives and Key Results for 2019
Vulnerability Datasets
• Beliefs - ADAS and Level 3/4/5 CAVs need inform inputs for out of
sight tracking. Heat mapping and stress indexing is NOT the same as
vulnerability. Vulnerability data without ML/AI has value and will only
increase in value with AI/ML.
• Stakeholders – Interested but failure to find partners willing to
integrate and test.. Federal Highway is the only funding in FY2020 plan
(October 2019) proposal.
• Vision - Providing complete situational awareness for V2V/V2X
systems will require BOTH wireless communication points as well as
data sets for what to expect. The additional data can be used to gain
AI/ML instincts beyond human expectations
Objective: AI/ML Datasets for CAV Situational Awareness

Notes de l'éditeur
Extrapolated from MDOT bicycle crash statistics in the state of Michigan, approximately 12,881 (28.6%) bicycle crashes in the U.S. happen on streets with speed limits 35+ mph
Supporting Evidence - The risk of death to a cyclist increases by 25% per 10 mph increase in motor vehicle collision speed, for speeds above 30 mph

Bicycle Safety Index to cover all parts of the steers (including segments and intersections) and safety indicators and cycling facilities.
Model can be used in urban setting to show level of safety
5GAA = 5G Automotive Association
VRU = Vulnerable Road User
CAMP = Crash Avoidance Metrics Program (Ford/GM/Federal Hwy collaboration)
USDOT = US Department of Transportation
BSM = Basic Safety Message - Broadcast by vehicles to provide situational data (location, heading, speed, etc.) to surrounding vehicles, used to assess threat potentials
PSM = Personal Safety Message - Broadcast by VRU devices to announce their presence to approaching vehicles
5G - C-V2X “seems” to be winning as the go forward standard. B2V needs to be technology agnostic (open standards), but we recommend focusing wireless V2V on 5G C-V2X vs. DSRC. Engage with 5GAA officially.
Bluetooth - With support from Ford, we have proven that Bluetooth shows promise as another open standard solution for all bicycle and scooter manufactures. Standards are pre-competitive, automotive applications remain competitive / proprietary.
SAE Standards - Continue developing the PSM with CAMP and USDOT on the SAE J2945/1. Engage with the Cross-Cutting Technical Committee for BSM/PSM and the SAE Micromobility Working Group.
Device Dynamics - We need bicycle and scooter companies to help us define the dynamics and other specifications to validate the rider experience, power, weight limitations for the devices. Recommend workshop in Detroit in next 60-90 days. Pre-competitive - CAMP led with CAMP OEM members
AI/ML = Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning
CAV = Connected Autonomous Vehicle
Why - We still believe that the ability for out of site tracking will require “stand alone” inform inputs for ADAS as well as Level 3/4/5 CAVs. We also believe that heat mapping and stress indexing is NOT the same as vulnerability. This data without ML/AI has value and will only increase in value with AI/ML based on existing vulnerability indices.
Stakeholders - We have failed to find partners willing to work with us to integrate and test. We have plenty of companies “interested” but no funding on the program. The only level of support we have received is through Federal Highway and we are including this in the FY2020 plan (October 2019) proposal.
Larger Vision - Providing complete situational awareness for V2V/V2X systems will require BOTH wireless communication points as well as data sets for what to expect. We feel that we can not only match what humans expect while driving but we can beat it with data to provide AI/ML instincts.
