Velocity is a sports performance facility that teaches athletes of ages 7 and up the techniques that will help them achieve optimal sport performance. These techniques are taught through certified instruction by coaches such as myself who develop, implement, and evaluate sport performance programs. I created a PowerPoint that highlights my experience as an intern at Velocity Sports Performance. I have gained so much through these experiences and my mentorship.
2. Description of Site
• Velocity is a sports performance facility that
teaches athletes of ages 7 and up the
techniques that will help them achieve
optimal sport performance. These techniques
are taught through certified instruction.
• Velocity Sports Performance is in
Powdersville, South Carolina. Velocity has a
turf field, resistance area, 50 yard track
strip, a basketball court, and a batting cage.
3. Strength and Conditioning Department
• Much of my internship was spent in the Strength and Conditioning
Department of Velocity.
• Within the Strength and Conditioning Department I became
certified in Olympic Weightlifting and I also gained a better grasp
of how to coach and instruct athletes of varying ages.
4. Velocity’s Mission Statement
• The mission of Velocity Sports Performance is to make the joy of
athletic achievement attainable to all. When we ask our athletes
“Why do you train?” we wish to hear more than “to get faster”.
What gets an athlete on the field for four hours of practice? Is it
desire? Belief? What keeps a second string athlete on the field or
court to work on their craft long after practice has ended? Pride?
Determination?
5. Velocity’s Core Values
• The STACK Velocity Sports Performance values, or V-TRUTHS, are
the result of our, as coaches, intent to become more than just
another sports training facility and company. Our V-TRUTHS
(desire, belief, character, determination, heart, and pride)
guide everything we do and say as coaches, professionals, and
businessmen and women. These values permeate our entire
organization from the CEO to our coaches, from our customers to
our franchises helping make us one of the most positive and
passionate places for both young kids and adults to experience the
joy of performance training.
6. Roles and Responsibilities
• My official title during my internship was “Performance Coach
Intern”.
• I developed programs that helped athletes get faster and stronger.
• I studied the human body and how it works in motion.
• I learned what it takes to operate a successful sports performance
facility.
7. Professional Development
• The science behind performance training
evolves at a rapid pace and in order to stay
ahead in this industry one must be willing
to grow.
• I am always wanting to grow more and
know more within my desired career path.
• One of the ways in which I continue my
education is through certifications. During
my internship I was given the opportunity
to obtain my certification in Olympic
Weightlifting which is a minimum
requirement for most major division-one
collegiate strength and conditioning
programs.
• Shown to the right is an image of my
certification.
8. Practice what you preach…
• As a former collegiate athlete and aspiring
performance coach, I feel one has to live
the life they wish to see in others.
• A fair portion of my internship experience
was also in me personally participating in
the performance classes to know what the
athletes experience and as I am getting
coached on technique, I know what to coach
in my athletes of the classes I conduct.
• To the right is an image of me going through
a maximum velocity workout focused on
front-side mechanics and how the body
must contact the ground.
9. Acceleration
• To the right is an image of me coaching the
elements of acceleration with one my fellow
interns with a resisted start.
10. CORE Training
• The CORE is often mistakenly used synonymously
for the abdominals.
• The CORE is actually a collection of spine
stabilizing muscles that include, but are not
limited to, the latissimus dorsi, the gluteals,
hamstrings, and transverse abdominals.
• To the right is an image of me coaching a
transverse [rotational] CORE exercise.
11. Velocity Fitness [V-Fit]
• A part of my internship experience gave me the
opportunity to instruct an adult fitness class.
• Adult fitness classes gave me an opportunity to
teach the principles of fitness to adults who want
to stay in shape and who also want to be in better
health.
• To the right is an image of me instructing foot
speed and agility on the agility ladder.
12. Velocity Fitness [V-Fit] Endurance Project
• For one of my projects, I conducted a six week weight loss and
strength challenge for our adult fitness athletes.
• I designed an exercise program that would increase overall
strength and endurance.
• I selected five exercises I felt would get a gauge of their overall
strength and endurance.
• There was a pre-test and a post-test conducted on the sixth week
of the challenge. Results were documented and we were all
pleased to know that all of the participants improved!
13. Youth Athlete Clinic
• Another one of my projects was a youth athlete clinic.
• I enjoy working with younger athletes and children in general and
in order to mold them and help them make long-lasting better
decisions for their health and performance, they have to be
properly instructed. There is a lot of junk to sift through and by
the parents being the decision makers, this is also something the
parents of my youth athletes were to know.
• Our site hosted a clinic for all athletes from 7-13 in the
community and I educated them.
14. Being a resource…
• As an athlete I did not have a lot of guidance, a lot
of the things I learned were through trial and error.
• Given my position and aspirations, I wish to be the
guidance for young athletes that I did not have in
hopes of helping them avoid the error. That is not
to say that mistakes will not happen, but to limit
them is to produce a better athlete and better
person.
• Shown is a video of my girlfriend’s son, Hayden,
who loves working out with me at my internship
site because he knows I played football and coach
football players and other athletes.
15. Conclusion
• I am grateful for my time at Velocity Sports Performance.
• Mentorship makes the most in a learning experience, I have been
fortunate to have a collection of leaders who have been willing to
share knowledge with me that makes me a better man and coach.
I had that in Mike Johnson and him taking the time to help me
develop has made the experience much more enjoyable.
• My favorite aspect of my internship was having the ability to coach
athletes of various ages and sport.
• I have also been offered a position upon graduation.
