Sundowners overland agent presentation ts, tm, sr + india

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. Introduce yourself and explain briefly what is to be covered today Today I will discuss; A little about our company, our philosophy and experience all around Asia The unique and interesting destinations we visit- the roads less travelled. We will provide you with a snapshot of the different journeys and adventures on offer And discuss what life is like on the road with Sundowners Overland
  2. Provide a brief introduction to Sundowners Overland, appealing to our history and expertise within the region: Since the 1960’s we have been crossing Asia from India to Europe and most places in-between. Next year we will be celebrating our 50 years travelling Asia overland. Today we are the most highly regarded Asia overland travel company offering the most extensive choice of overland journeys across the region. We believe your journey should be an optimal blend of experiences and destinations reflecting your personal interests, desires and budget.
  3. An introduction to the regions we travel: Sundowners Overland travels from China to Russia and beyond- across the entire continent of Asia. The countries we visit include; China, Mongolia, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Iran, Turkey, Turkmenistan and India. Experience the world famous Trans Siberian Railway – the world’s longest railway! AND Explore the Silk Road, one of the oldest trade routes that still exists today.
  4. Introduction to the Trans Mongolian and Trans Siberian Railways: Key Points: The Trans Siberian Railway is the world’s longest railway line- spanning across 9288km. This is one of the most famous overland journeys of all time. The railway spans across vast Asian landscapes and the train passes by rivers, lakes and over rolling mountains- truly beautiful scenery. The Trans Siberian railway was planned by Tsar Alexander III, but finished by Tsar Nicholas II who laid the foundation stone in 1890. It’s a railway that most people have heard about, but don’t know a lot about the unique destinations along it. Travelling this railway provides you with a great opportunity to witness diverse cultures, tradition and see how the East meets West, from Asia into Europe.
  5. Today I am going to take you on one of our most popular journeys, the Trans Mongolian Discovery. This journey can either be taken as a Fully Escorted Tour or an Independent Journey, however today I will be talking about it in the context of a Fully Escorted Tour. The Trans Mongolian Discovery heads west from Beijing to St. Petersburg and takes you from China, through Mongolia and all the way into Russia. In the space of three weeks you will cover a staggering 8,514 kilometres of ever changing landscapes, people and fascinating cultures.
  6. Many of our Sundowners Overland journeys begin in China’s capital, Beijing. However, if you are travelling independently, or are on a Tailor-Made journey or Private Group Tour- you have the freedom and flexibility to choose your own starting point. Some travellers might choose to start their journey in Hong Kong or Shanghai which can be arranged by our specialist Travel Advisors. Before your tour, make the most out of your time in China and visit the Xian Shanghai before joining this journey in Beijing.
  7. Most of our Fully Escorted Tours will start with a day trip walk along the Great Wall where there are many different sections for you to explore. On this particular journey, we head to Muytianu - an unforgettable highlight.
  8. Be sure not to miss the Forbidden City and Tiananmen Square, the third largest city square in the world- and the landmark of several important events in Chinese history. In this image you see the Gate of Heavenly Peace and the entrance to the Forbidden City.
  9. Hou Hai, translated ‘Queen Sea’, is a lake surrounded by a popular bar, restaurant and café district in Beijing. In recent years Hou Hai has become a favourite social hub amongst locals and travellers alike. Take a ride on a paddleboat and enjoy the sights and smells of your colourful surrounds. IMAGE: Be sure to visit the Houtongs, a series of old alley ways in the old town of Beijing where you’ll be transported back in time.
  10. Relax and unwind to a Tai Chi session with the locals. Tai Chi is a slow movement Chinese Martial Art practised for both self defence training and health benefits. It’s incredibly therapeutic and mesmerising to watch!
  11. China is world renowned for its food and Beijing offers a plethora of culinary delights such as; Peking Duck, dumplings, noodles, soups and sweet desserts.
  12. Or be daring and indulge in the weird, wacky and wonderful local delicacies at the night market.
  13. A favourite amongst our clients is Alice’s Tea House- fuel your body with a time honoured healthy drink. Alice will show you that there is more to tea than just the leaves!
  14. Those travelling on a Fully Escorted, Experience and Private Group Tours- will be escorted to the train station by their Local Guide. If you are travelling on a Tailor-Made Journey, or independently you will collect your train tickets from one of our local partners prior to the scheduled train departure. Alternatively, our Travel Advisors can arrange for your train tickets to be delivered to your hotel.
  15. Relax, unwind and enjoy life on board the train: Many journeys include a number of overnight stays on trains. This is your opportunity to spend time with the locals, learn a few words in another language and enjoy the company of your fellow passengers. Enjoy the vast Asian terrain as you travel across the ever-changing landscapes.
  16. Where do you sleep? Most accommodation is standard, 4-berth compartments with the option of a 2-berth upgrade. All cabins are clean and comfortable. Just like our journeys, you have many options when it comes to train travel accommodation. Fully Escorted Tours, Independent Journeys and Experience Tours have the option of upgrading their accommodation to a 2-berth compartment. If travelling on one of our Premium Journeys, a 2-berth upgrade is included. Those travelling on a Tailor-Made journey or Private Group Tour will have their choice of train and type of compartment. Please note that sleeping configurations and options may differ depending on which leg of the journey/region you are visiting.
  17. If you are travelling with another person and wish to have a little more privacy, in many cases you have the option of booking a 2-berth upgrade. Where 2-berth compartments are not available, this can also mean sole use of a 4-berth compartment.
  18. Security On every train there will be police and security guards. All carriages have attendants who keep the carriages clean and tidy. You can lock your cabin once you are inside your cabin, however if you should go to the dining car you can ask your attendant to lock the door after you and they will open it upon your return. Train stops Sometimes you will be able to get off at train stops, grab a quick bite to eat and stretch your legs. Just make sure you ask the cabin attendant how long you have, otherwise you will be left behind!
  19. There are western style amenities on every train carriage. Whilst there are typically no showers, there are wet rooms with running water where you can freshen up.
  20. The Dining Car is a great place to have a bite to eat and mix with your fellow passengers. Whilst you can purchase food on board you are also welcome to bring your own. A combination of standard fare and locally sourced produce is available for you to purchase. Simple vegetarian and take-away options are available. The available food will depend upon the country you are travelling through, the season and what is available to purchase locally. For this reason the quality of cuisine can be variable.
  21. Watch from the window as the towns and villages of northern China go by. At the border of China and Mongolia you will witness the impressive feat of changing the bogies where wheels are changed to fit the new tracks in Mongolia. Every single carriage is then lifted onto the tracks by machinery. The next morning you will travel through the Gobi Desert, you might be lucky enough to spot camels in the distance. As the train continues across the Mongolian Steppe, landscapes continue to impress as you curve around tight bends into Ulaanbaatar.
  22. Welcome to the land of eternal blue sky.

  110. Every day of the year offers different reasons for you to travel the Trans Siberian Railway. Each season is spectacularly intense, not only changing the personality of the landscape but of the cities too and even invading the trains with their moods. The seasons and the months here are similar to those known in other temperature zones of the northern hemisphere. For many people the word ‘Siberia’ sends a frosty shudder down their spine and for good reason. But the winter wonderland of deep, crisp snow extending through the woodland and across the plains is very alluring and the experiences of winter in this region are unsurpassable. Central heating is worshipped in Russia’s every building, ensuring sub-tropical temperatures inside and often the train is the warmest place of them all with its cosy compartments. Spring arrives in April and the land begins to thaw, bringing back the birds and rousing the wildlife form its five month slumber. The annual miracle of summer occurs in July, with a 19 hour arc of the sun. Cherries and strawberries are sold at the platforms and barbecue smoke hangs in the air from day-long picnics. The summer temperatures are lovely and mild, with the average temperatures falling between a comfortable 17-20°C. With long days of sunshine and lovely warm temperatures, summer welcomes an array of cultural festivals to enjoy during your travels. From the Stars of the White Nights festival in St. Petersburg, to the Naadam Festival in Mongolia and the beautiful Obon Festival in Japan you will be swept away in the local celebrations held between June and August. Autumn is russet like a sea at sunset and the station ladies, wrapped now in October like the original ‘Matryoshka Dolls’ are selling wild berries, hazelnuts and the headscarves that they are wearing. Beautiful autumn colours sweep across the landscapes as trees begin to shed their branches signalling that the festive season is soon approaching once more.

The water of Lake Baikal and her vast surrounds are incredibly serene during winter, creating picturesque sceneries that you will experience no where else in the world.
  112. With the winter seasons comes an abundance of activities for you to enjoy. Why not try; Riding around in a hovercraft over Lake Baikal. The winners of the contest are granted the titles of “National Marksman" and “National Markswoman".
  118. Mongolian horse racing is a cross-country event, with races 15–30 km long. The length of each race is determined by age class of the horse, two-year-old horses race for ten miles and seven-year-olds for seventeen miles.
