CONCEPT OF FORCE
1
• A force is a push or pull upon an object resulting from the
object’s interaction with another object.
• It is a vector quantity (having both magnitude & direction).
• The unit of force is newton (N).

FORCE CLASSIFICATION
FORCE
Contact Force Body Force
It is produced by direct
physical contact between
objects.
It is produced when an
object is located within a
force field.
• Applied force
• Drag force
• Frictional force
• Normal force
• Spring force
• Tension force
• Gravitational force
• Electrical force
• Magnetic force
4
CONTACT FORCE
Applied Force
It is a force that is applied to an object by a
person or another object
Drag Force
It is a force that is experienced by an object
when it is moving through a fluid
Frictional Force
It is a force that is resisting the relative
motion of objects sliding against each other
CONTACT FORCE
5
Normal Force
It is a force that is acting perpendicular to
the surface of object
Spring Force
It is a force that is exerted upon an object by
a compressed or stretched spring
Tension Force
It is a force that is exerted by a cable, rope,
chain or string when they are subjected to pull
6
BODY FORCE
Gravitational Force
It is a force that causes massive objects to
pull other objects towards them
Electrical Force
It is an attractive or repulsive force between
two charged objects
Magnetic Force
It is an attractive or repulsive force between
two magnetic objects
FORCE SYSTEM
7
Definition
When number of forces act simultaneously
on a body then they are said to form
a force system
8
