MBC 1010 Medical Coding: Current Procedural Terminology 4 Credit Hours Prerequisite: MED 1010 This course introduces the
student to Current Procedural Terminology (CPT). The CPT coding system, released by the American Medical Association,is a
systematic listing and coding of procedures and services performed by physicians.Emphasis is placed on coding accuracy and
specificity using this coding system.
MBC 1020 Medical Coding: International Classification of Diseases 4 Credit Hours Prerequisite: MBC 1010 This course introduces
the student to the International Classification of Diseases (ICD). The ICD is a set of guidelines for reporting and coding diseases
and/ordiagnosis terms for illnesses, injuries, and encounters with health care professionals.Emphasis is placed on coding accuracy
and specificity using this system.
MBC 1035 Intermediate Coding 4 Credit Hours Prerequisite: MBC 1010 Students will review CPT-4 coding conventions and will be
introduced to the HCPCS Level II codes.This course also advances the students’proficiency through the evaluation of case st udies
using comprehensive integration of current coding systems.Emphasis is placed on outpatient professionalcoding.
MBC 1800 Medical Billing and Reimbursement 4 Credit Hours Prerequisite: None This course advances the student into the proces s
of billing and collections, as well as reimbursement and auditing/appeals.Emphasis is placed on proper billing and collection
techniques,filing of claim forms, claim rejections, adjustments that can be made, and the overall reimbursement concept.
MBC 2260 Advanced Medical Billing and Reimbursement 4 Credit Hours Prerequisite: MBC 1800 Students will use computer billing
software as they learn to apply advanced coding principles and techniques with an emphasis on complex case studies in the inp atient,
ambulatory, and physicianbased settings.
MBC 2500 Medical Billing and Coding Certification Review 2 Credit Hours Prerequisite: Completion of All Previous Course Work
and/orProgram Director Approval This course is designed to prepare Medical Billing and Coding students forthe certification exam.

Coders, the advanced student is assigned to a specific location and practices the responsibilities and duties of a Certified Billing and

MED 1117 – Microcomputer Fundamentals in Healthcare 4 Credit Hours Prerequisite: AOM 1010 This course introduces the student
to the Microsoft Office software applications, Word and Excel. This course also provides instruction on completing documents for
interoffice and outside communication with internal and external customers.
MED 1140 Medical Law and Ethics 4 Credit Hours Prerequisite: None This course includes an overview of medical law and ethics
including types of licenses, medical education, and professional conduct.Also includes orientation of the requirements regarding the
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the guidelines of OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health
Administration) which are mandatory in the medical field.
