The document provides an overview of a 5-week course on technology in teaching and learning. It outlines 3 main lessons: 1) current trends in ICT, 2) principles on using technology in education, and 3) instructional design models in educational technology. For lesson 1, it discusses trends like artificial intelligence, internet of things, augmented reality, and green computing and their importance in education. It also provides examples of how to apply these technologies in the classroom and potential challenges.

LESSON 1
Current Trends in ICT
(Credits: Alice M. Lacorte, DIT)
Suggested Timeframe: 2 weeks
Topics
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to demonstrate your
knowledge, skills and understanding on the current trends in ICT today. It
is essential for you to successfully perform the tasks in the following
indicators of success:
1. Overview of the current trends in IT
2. AI, IoT and Green ICT Applications in Education
3. Importance of AI, IoT and Green ICT in Education
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
In this lesson, you are expected to:
✔ describe various current trends in Information and Communications Technology (ICT)
today;
✔ describe how Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT) and Green computing
can be associated in education; and
✔ apply at least one example of tool from any current trends to enhance classroom
learning.
ATTRACT (Engage)
The use of ICT materials in the classroom had been significant since the
beginning of know-how of technology. It primarily intends to complement teaching and learning
events. Today, teachers have been continuously challenged to effectively utilize various
technologies in the classroom. Here are some of the top and current technology trends which can
be considered significant supplemental teaching and learning tools in today’s education

various strategies used to implement it. By looking at the picture, describe briefly
how you understand green IT or computing.

TECHOLOGY IN TEACHING AND LEARNING 1
IMPLANT (Explain)
A. Artificial intelligence
It pertains to computer systems which intends to imitate human intelligence. Recognition of
images, speech or patterns and decision making are the tasks it can accomplish. Intelligent
machines which work and react like humans are the highlights of computer science. These
intelligent machines can even perform the tasks faster and more accurately than humans. They
have already been useful to instruction primarily some tools that helps develop skills and testing
systems. Such tools are: “GRADESCOPE, a grading app for teachers; SPLASHMATH, an app
for those who want to learn Math, and ODDIZZI, an app for kids who want to learn Geography”.
B. Internet-of-Things (IoT)
It pertains to any device being connected
to the internet (determined with an on and
off switch) like cellphones, tablets, radios,
drones, coffee machines, air-conditioning
unit, lamps, etc. It enables gadgets, other
device including home appliances to be
linked to internet and be able to exchange
data thru the use of internet. The
development of the first internet pop
machine was loaded with cold coke can
be traced in 1982s at Camegie Mellon
University.
The pop machines can be checked thru
the internet and monitored if there are still
cold drink available for consumers to
take. It evolved from machine to machine
(M2M) communication which pertains to
linking a device to the cloud, to be able to
manage and collect data. This may be
done thru the internet even without human intervention.
C. Augmented Reality or Virtual Reality
It is a computer-generated image which lets the users be immersed in a particular environment.
It is primarily used in gaming and for training. Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that overlays
to develop and improve their environment. Examples for trainings are: (a) complex views with
Virtualship, (b) Simulation Software used to train U.S. Navy, Army and Coast Guard ship captains,
and (c) the most popular POKEMON GO is an example of AR.
There are various types of potentials in VR and AR which can be used in training, entertainment,
education, marketing, and even therapy after an injury. Either could be utilized to train doctors to
perform surgeries, offer museum-goers a deeper experience, enhance theme parks, or its
marketing.
We can describe that (AR) is an increasing demand and field of technology where real life is
improved by computer-generated sights and sounds. The most common use of AR can be seen
through mobile apps. The effect makes the computer-generated item appear like it’s really there.

An example of this is: You may observe it when you point your device’s camera on something
that the app recognizes, and it will generate a 3D animation or video covered whatever is on your
camera’s screen.
D. Green Computing
Due to the world issues on climate change, Green computing is one of the concepts that is being
given consideration in the field of Information Technology today. Green computing does not only
cover the increase in the energy costs brought by human activities, savings that it will bring if
practiced in various organizations but also its major impact on the environment. Green computing
is defined as the study and practice of efficient utilization of computing hardware, software and
other resources. Its main goal accounts to three factors such as People, Planet and Profit. Its
goals are comparable with that of Green Chemistry which is to lessen the use of harmful materials,
exploit efficient use of energy in its product life span and encourage reuse or recycling of unused
factory waste products.
