2. • A safety net is a net to protect people from injury after falling from heights by limiting the
distance they fall and deflecting to dissipate the impact energy.
• TYPES OF SAFETY NETS:
1. Personal nets -100mm(4 inch max) mesh.Intended to catch man falling from above.
2. Material or debris protection nets-smaller mesh 12mm-19mm intended to protect those
below from falling objects
3. • Parameters in safety nets:
H-vertical distance in meters between net and uppermost working level above net
L-length of the shortest side of the net
D-horizontal projection from the outermost working point in meters
NOTE –for a fall of 1 meter the net must have a horizontal projection beyond the outermost working
point of 2.2 meters. while for a fall of 6 meters a projection of 3.2 meters is necessary.
erection is carried out by qualified persons in complains with BS CP 93. and ensure that the
supporting framework can withstand impact or shock loadings & is attached to frame work with
tie rods, hook, rings, or thimbles spaced at a maximum of 750mm.tie rods are doubled the
strength of nets.
4. • Markings on safety nets:
Name /trademark to identify the manufacturer
Normal size of safety net
The British standard number (BS 3913)
the date of manufacture
Deflaction at the center of the net during a prescribed test.
Test certificate: supplied by the manufacturer stating
• Type of net
• Breaking strength
• Border cord (cord- consisting several strands or threads)
• Under test
• Height of drop withstood & deflection at the center when proof net tested.
5. • Periodic testing
• Safety nets are provided with short lengths of test cords, attached normally 8. they must not
be used as tie cords.
• At intervals exceeding 3 months one cord should be rested and the record kept
• Net use after 2 years (ie 8 times 3 months)or if there is any deterioration advice should be
sought from the manufacturer.
• Net should be inspected weekly for damage, loose ties, etc together with the framework &
anchorage points. all such inspections should be recorded.
Safety checklist-safety nets
• Erected & supervised by competent persons
• Inspected within previous week
• Free fall distance not more than specified
6. During use
• Kept clear of debris
• Not abused (to collect rubbish or people jumping into it)
• Inspected
After a fall
• For effect of contamination etc
• every week
After use
• Inspected for damage
• Defects reported
• Records maintained
• Dried and stored correctly
