1. THE FUNCTION OF ANIMATION
IN COMMUNICATING MENTAL
ILLNESS
REPORT PROPOSAL
2. REFLECTIVE
‘Relevant theories’
‘Technical experimentation’
‘Critically reflect on work and development’
EXTENDED
‘Based around reading and understanding secondary and primary texts on your subject and
visual analysis’
TECHNICAL
‘Examining processes/techniques’
‘Use your report to document and analyse the results of your experimentation’
3. 1. ANIMATION’S APTITUDE FOR
PORTRAYING CEREBRAL TOPICS
Some Protection. (1987). [film]
Directed by M. Rimminen and O. Yadin.
4. • Gathering more quotes and arguments from authors and editors
like Paul Ward, Paul Wells, Mark Colington and other books by
Jayne Pilling
• Carrying out my own experiments with animating feelings
• Asking friends to talk about their experiences with anxiety which I
will then animate
• Taking notes from existing animations
MY RESEARCH
5. 2. ANIMATED DOCUMENTARIES
"THE ANIMATED DOCUMENTARY RECONCILES THE T WO
AGENDAS OF 'THE BEAUTIFUL' AND 'THE TRUE' THROUGH ITS
OWN HYBRID AESTHETICS, WHICH OFTEN ADVANCE AND

SIMULTANEOUSLY ARTICUL ATING SOCIAL 'TRUTHS' IN A
FASHION UNAVAILABLE ELSEWHERE".
All Of A Sudden Something Popped.
(2017). [film] Directed by D. Patel.
Wells, P. (1997). 'Animation is the
most important art form of the
Twentieth Century', Discuss. Art and
Design, 12, p.41.
6. • My final animation will act as the result of my research, and so all
development work towards this will act as primary research
• I will also explore the conflict of aesthetics vs. truth in animated
documentaries, and what benefits animation brings to the
documentary genre
• Taking notes from existing animations
MY RESEARCH
7. 3. ANIMATION USED PRACTICALLY
Animation Therapy. An Animation Therapy
Workshop. Web. 8 May 2017.
ONE OF THE MANY
INTERESTING QUALITIES
OBSERVED FROM USING
ANIMATION IN CLINICAL
PRACTICE IS HOW THE
ANIMATION PROCESS
CAN ENABLE THE VISUAL
EXTERNALISATION OF
THOUGHTS AND
FEELINGS THAT MAY BE
DIFFICULT OR
IMPOSSIBLE TO
VERBALISE THROUGH
TALKING BASED THERAPY
APPROACHES ALONE.
Mason, H. (2011). The re-animation approach:
animation and therapy. The Journal of Assistive
Technology, 5(1), p.40.
8. • I will research the use of animation in art therapy and the
demographic that find it useful
• May contact mental health organisations like Mind or Animation
Therapy to find more information
MY RESEARCH
9. “I have chosen these three investigations because I feel they will all
inform and offer useful perspectives to one another – the first
chapter is necessary in explaining my stance and initial interest in
the subject, the second follows on from the first while focusing on a
specific branch of animated film and incorporating my own practice,
and the final chapter brings the subject to a wider purpose that
explores the possibilities of animation in the present day, beyond
artistic expression. I expect to better my understanding of
animation as a process and method of storytelling, while also
considering it as a means of expression and communication in an
art therapy setting.”
