Meaning of the Simple Past

    • A completed action in the past
• Use it when we want to talk about last
               weekend!
Comparison of the Verb: To Be
        Present Tense Simple Past
• I: Am • I: Was
• You: Are • You: Were
• He/She/It: IS • He/She/It: Was
• We: Are • We: Were
• You (with me): Are • You (with me): Were
• They: Are • They: Were
                         • But what about
                             some other verbs?
Patterns
Examples:
• Simple Present: I visit my friend everyday.
 • Past tense: Yesterday, I visited my friend

 • Simple Present: I order pizza for lunch.
  • Yesterday, I ordered pizza for lunch.

        • She watches TV everyday.
       • Yesterday, she watched TV.

         What is the pattern here?
Change these into the Simple Past
          using “-ed”
         1. I enter the building
             2. We fold kites.
             3. It heals well.
         4. They record music.
           5. You instruct him.
         6. She plays with him.
            7. I own a house.
        8. We exercise everyday.
         9. They study together.
          10. He stops the car.
Regular Verbs: Tricky Spellings!
“End with an –e then just ad –d!”
• Fire  Fired
• Balance  Balanced

End with Y (with a consonant before) then “drop the –y
                         add – i , ed!”
                    • Terrify  Terrified
                        • Fry  Fried

            • Examples when not to drop the –y
                    • Pray  Prayed
                    • Play  Played
More tricky spellings: Simple Past
                • Doubling the consonant.
If the verb ends in a
              consonant + vowel + consonant
Then you must double the last consonant then add + ed

                      Stop  stopped
                      Plan  Planned
                       Bin  Binned
                       Slip  Slipped

Do not double if word ends with x or w
                        Fix  Fixed
                      Mix  Mixed
Not so simple….because of irregular
             verbs……

Present Tense: I drive to school.
Past Tense: I drove to school.

      Present Tense: I write books.
       Past Tense: I wrote books.

        What’s the pattern here?
Let’s try some of these Irregular
            Verbs….
             1. I catch fish.
         2. You build a tower.
       3. He buys fish everyday.
        4. We dig for treasure.
      5. They come from France.
          6. The cat breaks it.
         7. It cost 100 dollars.
Max the Cat pt. 1

• Run/Ran • Put/Put

• Fall/Fell
• Beat/ Beat

Max the Cat Part 2.
What if we were going to turn the
simple past into a negative by adding
               “Not”?
For answering questions about the past.

Regular Example: Yesterday, I talked to John. I
            didn’t talk to Sarah.

Irregular: Saturday I slept a lot. Sunday, I didn’t
                      sleep.

Construction: Did not + Verb (infinitive)
Write these words down on your Bingo Boards!
What do you think the conjugation will
                be?
                    • Give
                    • Hold
                   • Swim
                    • Take
                    • Fight
                     • Bite
                    • Hang
