Completely Unexpected
Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as
faithful stewards of God's grace in its various forms.
1 Peter 4:10
Ever since I was a kid, I remember loving all things geeky, from comics of all variety, to
movies, cartoons, and video games. That’s always been my personality. Naturally, those
things come up in conversation (and sermons) quite a bit. I’m sure you find your
interests do, too, whether it’s sports, knitting, or underwater basket weaving suspended
upside down in a protective cage while sharks swim around.
A few years back, while attending a seminar for young pastors in Indianapolis, during
one of our sessions, the question was posed to our group, “What is something about
you that you’ve found surprisingly helpful in your ministry?” When it came time for my
response, I shared that it had to be my eclectic variety of interests.
Along with all those things I mentioned before, I also have a love of professional
wrestling. What amazed me was one afternoon, while visiting with a young family new
to a church I was serving, I discovered they, too, had a love of wrestling, which
delighted their son, Jacob. Once he heard that I enjoyed wrestling, he disappeared to his
room, only to emerge a few minutes later with his small plastic wrestling ring and a
handful of wrestling action figures. He motioned for me to sit down and play, so I
obliged. As he called out each character, citing their height and weight, he challenged my
plastic guy to a match, and the fight was on. Of course, he won.
During all of this, as his dad watched us play, he remarked that I was like no other
pastor he’d ever met, because never had a pastor sat on their living room floor to play
WWE with their son.
I share this because all of us have gifts, and those gifts can often manifest through the
things we’re interested in. Now, I don’t cite my love of things geeky as the gift. Instead,
it’s the ability to relate to people, to find common interest, to help them see that matters
of faith and spirituality aren’t far separated from their everyday lives.
We can fool ourselves into thinking that faith, spirituality, and even church fit into these
nicely packed boxes where everything looks the same, talks the same, acts the same, as if
there is some criteria one must meet to be considered Christian. Yet, a message of
scripture is God meeting people where they are and inviting them to have extraordinary
encounters with the divine, even in the things we might deem trivial or insignificant.
So, I’ll keep talking about superheroes and adolescent anthropomorphized martial artist
reptiles and saving the universe by mashing buttons on a plastic controller and huge
muscle bound guys “pretending” to beat each other up, because I have found that God
has a way of fitting those things into the broader scheme of ministry, of taking those
things that don’t seem to fit within the church context and creating holy situations.
May you see that God has given each of us a variety of interests, talents, strengths, all to
be used in a manner that benefits Kingdom growth, even in ways completely
unexpected.

Bible Study Updates
While the pastor is on vacation, there will be a brief break from the Revelation study.
Fear not, because on Wednesday, September 2nd, fellow Campbell Divinity alumni
Gavin McLaughlin will provide the Bible study.
Then, on Wednesday, September 9th, KBC welcomes Amber Butler, cousin of Susan
Sessoms, Pastor Trent’s wife. Amber recently returned from a year of missionary work in
Portugal. Come hear Amber share about her ministry before she heads back later this
month to continue her work.
Once we’re back into the regular routine, we’ll pick back up with the Revelation study on
Wednesday, September 16th. In the meantime, go ahead and read as far as you can, but
for study purposes we’ll work on chapters 6-7. If you have missed the study up to this
point, or any in between, don’t worry, because Pastor Trent can supply you with study
notes to help bridge the gap.
Hope to see you on Wednesday nights!
