This document compares Linux and Windows servers. Linux servers are high-powered variants of the Linux open source operating system designed for business applications. Examples are CentOS and Debian. Linux servers are reliable, can run on older hardware, support programming languages well, and have lower long-term costs than Windows servers. Windows servers are based on Microsoft's Windows operating systems and provide standard server capabilities but may be less flexible and reliable than Linux.
3. A Server is
- a computer program or a machine
- That accepts & respond to requests generated by another
program/machine.
Primary Function of Server
- Managing network resources
- Provides shared service to connected workstations(clients) i.e.
serving all those computer that are present in its network
- Share data or hardware and software resources among clients
5. Linux Server?
- high-powered variant of the Linux open source operating system
- Designed to handle the more demanding needs of business applications
- Such as network and system administration, database management
and Web services.
- Example: CentOS, Debian, Ubuntu Server and etc.
6. CentOS
- Community Enterprise Operating System
- Developer: The CentOS Project (affiliated with Red Hat)
- Initial release: 14 May 2004; 15 years ago
- Latest release: 7.6-1810 (3 December 2018; 4 months ago)

- Available in 75 languages
- one of the earliest operating systems based on the Linux kernel.

- Latest release: Ubuntu 18.10, 18 October 2018 (6 months ago)
- one of the earliest operating systems based on the Linux kernel.
11. Windows Server ?
- Any type of server instance that is installed, operated and managed by
any of the Windows Server family of operating systems.
- exhibits and provides the same capability, features and operating
mechanism of a standard server operating system and is based on the
Windows NT architecture.
- Example: Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2008, Windows
Server 2016
12. - Developer: Computer scientist Amitabh Srivastava at Microsoft Research
- First Microsoft Windows version
- General availabilityApril 24, 2003; 16 years ago
- availability April 24, 2003; 15 years ago
- Final release: Service Pack 2 (5.2.3790) / March 13, 2007; 12 years ago
- used this server to kernel in the development of Windows Vista
16. Windows Linux
Installation is easy and runs in the default
mode
Open Source.
Anybody has the freedom to build apps.
Wide variety of software are available.
Windows are handy in nature
Cheaper compared to windows and
for web hosts it’s free
Includes array of Drivers Stable and are not prone to viruses
Creates a steady stable platform Can handle multiple process at a time but
not degradation of process occurs
Application integration is easier No RE-BOOTING required
Windows Access Control is major feature Secured compared to windows
Pros
17. Cons
Windows Linux
Suffers from security problems. To support ASP and .NET files needs
software such a ChillsoftASP and
Apache::ASP
Requires critical paths usually re-
booting
Software that run in Windows do not
run on Linux platform
Maintenance should be handled with
care.
Easily prone to viruses
Must be updated time-to-time.
Hardware components must be
upgrades frequently to meet the
increase in demand
Not as flexible as Linux
19. Linux VS Windows
1. Reliability
Windows
- becomes sluggish day after day.
- need to re-install Windows after a while when you encounter crashes or
slowdowns on your system.
Linux
- Not worry about re-installing it just to experience a faster and a smoother
system. Linux helps your system run smooth for a longer.
- Linux are reliable to web servers. Almost all of the supercomputers run on
Linux.
- For example Google and Facebook run on Linux Server
20. Linux VS Windows
2. Can revive older computers
Windows
- New OS cannot run on low-end system
- Has a higher hardware requirement
Linux
- Could utilize one of your oldest computer systems to achieve a task.
- But does not mean that every Linux distribution would work with 256 MB of
RAM coupled with an outdated processor.
- Linux distributions could be fitted to a range of systems(low-end or high-end)
21. Linux VS Windows
3. Perfect For Programmers
- Linux supports almost all of the major programming languages
(Python, C/C++, Java, Perl, Ruby, etc.)
- Linux also brings in native support for SSH, which would help you
manage your servers quickly.
