KEY INFO
17km from Kos town, Kos Reception and Identification Centre (RIC), is located at
Pyli and has been operational since the 14th of May.
Kos RIC has been designed and constructed on a site that was
previously part of a military base.
The management of the site is undertaken by the Reception
and Identification Service (RIS).
The site is comprised of three 'zones' A, B and C. The majority of
residents in zones B & C are single men, whilst zone A is occupied by
Families.
In the course of August 2016 the RIC of Kos reached maximum
capacity. In an effort to increase its hosting capacity a new
accommodation annex (Zone D), beside the RIC, was created, upon
request of RIS by the Army with support by UNHCR. The 19 UNHCR
tents installed there are fully winterized, but are unable to
accommodate all residents of the area.
UNHCR established a transport service to ensure a mean of transport between
the RIC and Kos town for extremely vulnerable refugees and asylum seekers.
Only registered and approved organizations can operate in the RIC.
The surrounding area and the site itself are property of the Hellenic Army.
Local community is opposed to the site and has protested about its
existence. However co-existence between locals and refugees
remained so far overall peaceful.
