INVASIVE PLANTS
WORKSHOP
While some might think kudzu
blanketing a hillside is strangely
beautiful, it is actually smothering
the forest (or buildings) beneath it.
Also known as mile-a-minute
plant, controlling it has been a
difficult challenge especially for
those whose yards are bordered by
the invasive plant.

2. KEEP ANDERSON COUNTY BEAUTIFUL FALL 2012
Keep America Beautiful is mobilizing Americans to support local ecosystems by planting native
species of trees, shrubs, and plants through a new call to action. The first National Planting Day will
take place on Saturday, September 8 through Friday, November 30. You may have even seen them
promoting their cause on the Today Show. How exciting!
Let’s Get Dirty!
The last thing you may want to do is get dirty, but National Planting Day may change your mind.
You don’t have to be a farmer, own a nursery or be a green thumb, anyone can plant a tree, shrub,
flowers or even vegetables. Many people plant to make their yards beautiful or feed their family.
Whatever the reason, it can be fun and get you moving to help yourself and the earth. Yes, you will
get dirty and maybe even muddy, maybe even feel like a kid again and yes, it can be fun. Don’t be
afraid if you run into a creepy crawly. They also help the earth thrive.
How Do I Get Started?
There are many websites to surf to choose the right kind of tree or flower that you want to take care
of and help grow. Local nurseries also have many experts on their staff to get you the perfect tree,
plant or flowers. So grab your shovel, hoe, gloves, a friend or family member and get digging.

Making Oak Ridge
Entrances Beautiful
In January of 2012, KACB partnered with
the Oak Ridge Rotary Clubs to install
landscaping for the community
organizational signs to be placed at four of
the major entrances to the City of Oak Ridge. Three
have been complete; the Pellissippi entrance off the
Solway bridge; Oak Ridge Turnpike coming from
Clinton; and the entrance on Illinois coming from
Oliver Springs.
Norris Day, 4th of July Celebration
KACB set up a beautiful booth at the 2012 Norris Day
Celebration in the lovely Town of Norris’s Commons area.
This was the 3rd year that KACB hosted an informational
booth during the festivities. Visitors to the KACB booth
were encouraged to continue or begin recycling efforts and
educational material was provided.
