What is optometry?
Optometry is a HealthCare profession that is autonomous,
educated & regulated (licensed/registered), & optometrists are
the primary healthcare practitioners of the eye & visual system
who provide comprehensive eye & vision care, which includes
refraction & dispensing, detection/diagnosis & management of
disease in the eye, & the rehabilitation of conditions of the
visual system.

Fully qualified optometrist with a minimum of four years of
training are qualified to :
• Prescribe the latest advances in spectacle lenses including
progressive, aspheric & safety/protective spectacles based
on the visual needs of the patient.
• Prescribe rigid & soft contact lenses including
orthokeratology, frequent replacement, & extended wear
contact lenses.
• Conduct complex contact lens fitting for paediatric eye
conditions, keratoconus, postsurgical complications, eye
trauma & corneal ectasia.

• Prescribe vision therapy, vision training or orthoptic
treatment for children with learning problems or common
binocular vision disorders, including strabismus &
amblyopia.
• Provide low vision & rehabilitative services-vidion aids

• Detector diagnose ocular conditions & associated
systemic health conditions, & refer them to appropriate
health care & professionals.
