1. Meet Kyle Gee,
Young and resourceful, Kyle has been motivated to always keep honing his craft. Thus,
he can handle whatever challenges heading his way.
Kyle began his career in construction when he was 15 years old. He worked on a utility crew, which laid
pipes and completed road work. At the age of 19 he earned a position as a foreman, and managed his own
crew. Two years later, Kyle earned himself an opportunity to become a project manager. Only 21 years
old, this new title allowed him the opportunity to go back to school and earn a diploma. Afterwards, he
worked in public government and contracting, leading him to what he does now: consulting.
Today Kyle is a successful engineering consultant. He’s employed by Opus Stewart Weir in Alberta and
works on various transportation and land development projects. Kyle formerly owned his own consulting
firm, and at this time noticed someone else who had their Gold Seal. In 2009 he applied to earn his Gold
Seal Certification. He worked hard for 6 years as a Gold Seal Intern, and in October 2015, Kyle successfully
earned his Certification.
Accompanying his successful obtainment of his Gold Seal Certification was a sense of relief. Gold Seal
Certification, similar to other professional development certification, was a personal goal Kyle set for
himself. Being faced with the obstacle of being considered young during most of his career, his main force
of motivation and challenge was how people perceived him. He faced the assumption that, due to his age,
he lacked the know-how to accomplish his duties. However, with time and patience, Kyle has
accomplished many career milestones. Education and professional development have always been
paramount for him. He’s wise to also understand that the landscape for construction and engineering is
naturally evolving, and he’s willing to change and grow with it. Through earning his Gold Seal Certification,
Kyle feels that he’s earned more recognition from his peers. He also notices improvement in his work, as
well has pride to have professional accreditation associated to the Canadian Construction Association.
When asked what he would say to others considering earning their Gold seal he replied: “Definitely go for
it. Professional development of any kind in our business is extremely important.”
