Treasure Hunt Government
Answer SIX of the following questions, give an answer, tell how you found the answer, and
briefly discuss the source that you used to find that answer. You only need ONE source
(instead of the usual two) for each question, but they must be US government sources such
as websites, publications or databases. Do not to repeat sources. Everything can be found
online.
1. Describe the educational attainment level, income, race, and languages of the
people in your hometown (Provide the breakdown)?
Following the text, I consulted the census.gov site to find information about the
educational attainment level, income, and race data. The population of the East
Baton Rouge Parish (EBRP) is 440,059; EBRP is 47.6% White, 47.2% Black, 4.4%
Hispanic, 3.4% Asian, and 0.3% American Indian or Alaska Native (United States
Census Bureau [USCB], n.d.). 90.3% held a high school degree by age 25 and
34.7% held a bachelor’s degree (USCB, n.d.). Median household income is $52,719
(USCB, n.d.). Language breakdown is as follows: English Only (91.9%), Spanish

2. Where can I find information about the different Medicare plans?
3. Is there an online portrait gallery of famous Americans?
I searched the web for “National Portrait Gallery.” The National Portrait gallery site
contains information about this state funded resource. Yes, the Smithsonian
Institution operates the National Portrait Gallery. You can search the database at
https://npg.si.edu/portraits.

6. My nine year old has to do a report on Venezuela. Is there a good site
published by the U.S. government with information about that country?
Following the text I searched The World Factbook. You can select “Venezuela”
from the drop down tab here: https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/resources/the-
world-factbook/index.html. This resource provides information on the government,
geography, economy, and other important information about all USA recognized

7. What is ANSI?
8. What is the career outlook for people working in forensic science by
educational attainment?
I searched the Bureau of Labor Statistics site to find information about occupational
data. The entry level requirement for becoming a forensic science technician is a
bachelor’s degree in forensic science. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics
(2020): “The median annual wage for forensic science technicians was $59,150 in
May 2019….The lowest 10 percent earned less than $35,620, and the highest 10
percent earned more than $97,350” (para. 1). We can also find information in the
BLS (2019) report for “Biological Scientists, All Other;” The following table from
that site gives information for the industrial sectors that employ these workers. This
table indicates that the average salary at a college of university (which would require
a Ph.D. for a professor job) is $68,250:

9. Where can I find statistical information about my state’s K-12 educational data
(demographics, spending, graduates, etc.)?
10. I’ve discovered that I am 1/4 Cherokee Indian. Where could I find information
about their tribe’s government? Whether I could join the tribe and what resources
are available for Native American Indians?
11. Where can I find updated information from the government on CIPA? What
exactly does it cover and what is required?
I searched the web for “CIPA.” I found information on the Children’s Internet
Protection Act on the Federal Communications Commision (FCC) site which is
maintained by the federal government. I found that:
The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was enacted by Congress in 2000 to
address concerns about children's access to obscene or harmful content over the
Internet. CIPA imposes certain requirements on schools or libraries that receive
discounts for Internet access or internal connections through the E-rate program – a
program that makes certain communications services and products more affordable
for eligible schools and libraries (Federnal Communications Commission [FCC],
2019).
You can also view act in the Code of Federal Regulations (Children’s Internet
Protection Act, 2011). It details specific requirements for protection and
monitoring of children using school and public libraries that receive funding via the
E-rate program for telecommunications services.

12. I want to file a FOIA request with the Department of Justice. Is that allowed?
If so, how do I file the request?
I searched the web for “FOIA” and found the government site of the Freedom of
Information Act, which contains frequently answered questions. According to
FOIA (n.d.) you should first check to see if the information you want is publicly
available, if it is not “you can submit a FOIA request to the agency’s FOIA Office.
The request simply must be in writing and reasonably describe the records you seek.
Most federal agencies now accept FOIA requests electronically, including by web
form, e-mail or fax” (para. 6). The Department of Justice accepts FOIA requests
and you can find the appropriate office for your request by following the link to the
department in the FAQ (FOIA, n.d.).
