Job Search
I have located three jobs, primarily through LinkedIn, that are within my fields of interest
and expected pay grade. The jobs are with Raytheon, L3 and IBM, three companies that are all
very respectable in their own fields and I wouldn’t find working for.
The first job, at Raytheon, was the Junior System Engineer Analyst. As a Junior System
Engineer Analyst, my primary job function would be to understand customer requirements,
supporting the Mode’s Team to ensure design and architecture meet those requirements and also
performing budgeting analysis to support performance predictions. While the LinkedIn did not
have a salary listed, Raytheon’s page showed $71,000. The lowest pay for the job in the nation
was $53,000 and the highest was $98,000. The Nation Average was actually $70,000, so I would
get a healthy salary, all before taxes of course.
The requirements expected are four years of experience in system development,
experience with complex algorithms, an ability to obtain an Interim Secret Clearance, Bachelors
Science Degree in Math, Science, Engineering or related technical field, experience with
mathematical problem solving ability and data analysis experience, as well as interfacing with
team leads, team members and other teams on a daily basis in both software and hardware.
I meet and exceed several of those requirements as I have dealt with complex algorithms
for some time now, and my math problem solving abilities are above average. I have a minor in
both Mechanical Engineering and Math, both of which are heavily required for the job. I have
plenty of experience in data analysis and management, as well as tons of experience interfacing
with all different kinds of people.
2. Areas that I am lacking would be that I haven’t finished my bachelors science degree for
Mechanical Engineering specifically yet, although I plan to in the near future. I do not currently
have any interim secret clearance, though I don’t imagine that would be difficult to attain. I also
have not been working on system development for four years, although I believe I would still be
proficient at it.
The outlook for this job is actually looking very good, depicting a twenty five percent
growth rate from 2012 to 2022. The job’s location would be in El Segundo California. I happen
to have friends that live out near there and would not mind moving there for the job. The job
would be a full time job, require forty hours a week. Roughly a quarter of the job holders have to
work more, though they are paid for the overtime.
The second job I found was with the company L3. This is another company I would love
to work with; doing a job I would love to do. The job title is Link Simulation & Training. I
would be the lead role for small, technical teams, designing and developing a variety of
applications and deployments. I would follow other lead engineers to complete large scale
projects with my team members, and solving solutions in an imaginative, thorough manner.
While the salary wasn’t posted, the range from L3’s website stated it would be between
$45,000 and $48,000, so a rather narrow margin. While this is quite a bit less than I want to be
earning, it would still be good for a job right out of college, and I would be doing something I
loved.
Some of the requirements are ten plus years experience in Windows, C#, .Net
development, and web based development. Five years of engineering team leadership, three
years of SQL Server experience, three years of Linux development, a year of Qt development, a
3. year of network infrastructure, a mature understanding of software development, and
development experience in 3D Geospatial data. Educational requirements are a bachelors degree
in computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering and/or other equivalent
experiences.
The areas that I meet or exceed these requirements are my knowledge 3D tools and data
management, I have tons of experience in engineering leadership in classes and projects, I have
over ten years working with Windows and am very well versed with it, and am a naturally born
team leader.
Areas that I lack would be not having a full ten years working with C++, no working
knowledge of C#, I have no working experience with Linux, and am not as talented at coding as
other computer engineers.
The outlook growth seemed very marginal, with only eleven percent over the next ten
years. The job would be in Dallas Texas, my home town, and would be a full time forty hour
work week. This job would be ideal for me to get started on, and the work environment would
be with other likeminded, creative, employees.
The third job is with IBM. I have some problems with IBM as they are falling behind in
the tech market, but they are still very well-known and a good company to start out for. The job
title would be Integrated Technology Services Solutions Representative. This job would require
me to work with clients, on a regular bases, in a sale approach to define and develop solutions
along with a team of other subject matter experts. Basically, I would be selling people solutions.
IBM did not list the salary online, although the national average for this job is $71,000.
4. Requirements for the job are at least three years experience in IT consultative sales,
fluent in English, travel for twenty five percent of the time, two years experience in specialize
sales and two years of team building.
I meet and exceed in several areas required for the job. I have worked in sales for cars
and other things my dad has sold, developing web pages, videos and adds to advertise for his
work. I have many years of team building, and team management. I also happen to be fluent in
English, which I found to be a rather odd job requirement.
I lack the three years experience in IT consultative sales, although I would imagine my
previous work experience would more than qualify me for it. My biggest concern would be the
notion of traveling for a mass majority of my time. I would be less likely to agree to this job if it
required me to travel too far, and I would not want it at all if it required me to move often.
The outlook for this job seems rather grim as IBM is struggling to stay on top in the job
market in anything other than their microprocessors. This job is located in Dallas Texas, again,
my home town. It would be a full time job of forty hours a week, though I don’t believe that
would include travel time.
To step back and reflect on the job options, I find the second job at L3 in Dallas to be the
best option. The reason for this is it seems to be a good entry level position in the company, and
I would hope to move up the corporate ladder to bigger and better project in the company. This
also happens to be a good location for me, as I would be able to see my parents and friends
regularly as I would live in my home town. Most likely, I would apply for this job either in
person, via LinkedIn or at a job interview here in Lubbock. I would submit my personal works
such as my senior design project as a prime example of what I am able to do while working with
5. a team. This job seems to be a perfect match for me, allowing me to be as open and creative as I
would want to be. I would explain to the employers that I have several years of experience in
team management all the way back to when I was in scouting, and as an Eagle Scout, I am
trained to be a leader. I also have lead several teams and accomplished noteworthy results in my
lab classes for mechanical engineering. This would undoubtedly put me above the rest of the
other candidates.
