The 9-frame analysis summarizes each shot from the movie Skyfall. Shot 1 introduces the title and shows the main actor falling into the sea. Shot 2 depicts the actor's body floating in the sea with a gunshot wound. Shot 3 displays the actors' names alongside a dark, menacing forest. Shot 5 shows a pumping heart and skull made of blood. Shot 8 features gravestones collapsing in the rain while blood falls, representing multiple deaths. Overall, the shots convey themes of death, violence, and darkness through their imagery, camera work, and central objects.
2. In the first shot, we see the title of the
movie as ‘Skyfall’ appears over the top
of the main actor going into a whole in
the seabed. The camera work includes
a POV shot to a long shot; after the long
shot, the camera zooms out. The actor
is the main point of the shot as he is
central and there is no other people in
the shot. The character in the sea could
represent death as he falls in (looking
lifeless).
Shot 1
3. In the second shot, there is a
cardboard-looking body of the main
character with a shot wound and blood.
This could represent he has been shot
and/or has died. The camera is
moving/panning through the sea and
this is where the bodies are floating are.
The ideology of this shot is the theme of
death or injury because of the gunshot
wound. Again the body is in the centre
of the shot, indicating they are the most
important as they are central and in
front of the rest.
Shot 2
4. In the third shot, there is the text of
‘Rory Kinnear’ and ‘Ola Rapace’
appears on the screen; these are the
actors/actresses in the movie. They
appear before a shot of a dark and
menacing forest. The camera dollies
through the forest and stays still with no
tilts. There are knives dangling in the
shot which could represent violence and
pain. There is an ideology of fighting
and darkness.
Shot 3
5. In the fourth shot, the text highlights the
makeup designer, the hair designer, Mr
Craig’s makeup, wardrobe supervisor,
publicity and marketing and promotions.
The camera is a low bird’s eye view and
it is zooming in on the character. The
character is shooting his shadows,
which could represent that he is in
danger from everyone (including his
shadows and the people hiding in his
shadows). The shot is in a building
where there are many pillars etc.
Shot 4
6. In the fifth shot, there is a skull made of
blood, which appears after a pumping
heart made of blood. This could represent
the idea of both life (due to the pumping
heart being a key object) and death (due
to the skull being another key object). The
camera zooms into the blood objects
through the sea; there is no clear use of
tilts or other movements. During the shots
of the blood, there are credits showing the
production staff. Both the heart and the
skull were the only clear prop/object in the
shot and both were central in regards to
positioning.
Shot 5
7. In the sixth shot, there is a sword/knife
coming from the centre of the shot in
between 2 women. The camera work can be
classed as the vertigo as the camera can be
possibly zooming in whereas the objects are
coming closer. The knife/sword could
represent violence or danger as it is a
weapon. The weapon is in the centre of the
shot which could suggest it is a key object or
a key idea. The text in the shot informs the
audience of the director of photography. In
regards to ideology, there is a theme of
darkness or mystery as it is all shown in an
X-ray filter effect which doesn’t give too much
away to the audience.
Shot 6
8. In the seventh shot, the text highlights the
name of the executive producer. In the
shot, there is a character in a suit standing
in an abandoned building, surrounded by
pillars again (this is a repetition of the
idea). Later in the shot, it is revealed he
has a gun. The camera zooms in from a
mid-shot to a gunshot wound in his chest.
The character is in the centre and forefront
of the shot, suggesting a dominance or
authority over other characters. The
shadowing on the face and body of the
character could represent that he is either
hidden or isn’t meant to be fully revealed
at that point.
Shot 7
9. In the eighth shot, there are several gravestones
in front of an unclear building while it is raining
blood; the gravestones also begin to collapse.
The gravestones and raining blood could
represent multiple deaths and the building
appears to be like a church, supporting this idea.
In regards to its ideology, there is an emphasis
of the theme of death (as a continuation of the
previous shots). The text informs the audience
of the writers of the movie. The church is central
and is bold, even though it is behind the
gravestones; this could show it has a larger
importance. The camera zooms through the
graveyard/gravestones, getting closer to the
church and finally going into the wall.
Shot 8
10. In the final shot, there is an eye which
transforms into darkness; the camera is
zooming into the actor’s/character’s eye after
going through a wall and eventually fading to
black. The text in the centre of the eye is
informing the audience who directed the movie.
The eye could represent that the character has
died and is going into a different thought or
setting. The eye is central, emphasising the eye
itself and its meanings (within context). The eye
could suggest a connection between the
character and the audience as the character is
looking directly at the audience. There is a clear
theme of both personal and private thought as it
is going through ‘the gateway to their soul’.
