4. Maslow’s Hierarchy
Abraham Maslow was psychologist who introduced his
concept Hierarchy of needs in 1943. His hierarchy suggests
that ‘people are motivated to fulfil basic needs before
moving on to other, more advanced needs’.
The needs are as followed:
1. Biological and Physiological needs -
air, food, drink, shelter, warmth, sex, sleep, etc.
2. Safety needs - protection from
elements, security, order, law, limits, stability, etc.
3. Belongingness and Love needs - work
group, family, affection, relationships, etc.
4. Esteem needs - self-
esteem, achievement, mastery, independence, status, domin
ance, prestige, managerial responsibility, etc.
5. Self-Actualization needs - realizing personal
potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth and peak
experiences.
He emphasised how important self actualization, which is a
process of growing and developing as a person in order to
achieve individual potential.
