Doctoral
level:
Doctoral seminar on scenography, costume design and production design, 4 credits
• A monthly meeting seminar where doctoral students develop their research
through presentations and discussions with opponent practices.
• 2-4 hour of lecturing + presentations + readings.
• The seminar has been running regularly since 2009.
Reading circles on various themes, 4 credits
• A monthly meeting seminar where doctoral students present and discuss
readings on specific themes:
• Fate of Place – a seminar on the philosophy of space and place. Together with
Sami Santanen in 2010-12.
• Research on art – a seminar on the methodology of artistic researsch. Together
with Jouko Aaltonen in spring 2012.
• Thinking Circle – a seminar with visiting lectures on recent research on art.
Together with Jouko Aaltonen 2012-13.
MA-‐level:
Introduction to research studies, 4 credits
• Introductory course on central contemporary theories and methods of the
research in performing and visual arts.
• 20 hours of lecturing + interactive discussions + readings + essay.
• The course is open to all MA and doctoral students taking an interest in the
subject.
• The course has taken place every year since 2005.
MA-seminar on scenography, costume and production design, 4 credits
• A weekly meeting seminar where MA-students develop their theses through

Participation in joint teaching at the Theatre Academy:
• Big Stage, 8 credits; 2009 and 2011.
o Practice-based course for MA-students in all fields of theatre. In
collaboration with Theatre Academy, University of Tampere and a
changing theatre.
o Participation in the planning, developing and teaching of the course.
• Artistic Theatre for Children and Young People, 12 credits; 2011.
o Practice-based course for MA-students in directing, dramaturgy,
acting, theatre pedagogy, scenography and costume design.
o Participation in the teaching team.
• Supervising teacher in several training productions at Theatre Academy.
2. BA-‐level
The History of Western Scenography, 3 credits
• Introductory course on the history of Western theatre from the perspective of
scenographic practices and artistic rhetoric.
• 20 hours of lecturing + interactive discussions + readings + essay + practical
exercises.
• The course is meant for BA students who have no previous knowledge of
theatre history.
• The course has taken place every second or third year since 2006.
The History and Theory of Contemporary Scenography, 4 credits
• Introductory course on the development of Western Scenography in the 20th
century. The emphasis is on theoretical analysis of the function and use of the
scenographic apparatus in the performance context.
• 20 hours of lecturing + interactive discussions + readings + essay + practical
exercises.
• The course is meant for BA students who have basic knowledge on theatre
history.
• The course has taken place every year since 2007.
Performance analysis, 3 credits
• Interactive course on the methodology of discussing and analyzing
scenography as part of performances from a hermeneutic and pragmatist
viewpoint (art as experience and event).
• 4-6 hours of lecturing + performance visits and discussions + readings +essay.
• The course is meant for BA students in scenography.
• The course has taken place every second or third year since 2006.
The basics of spatial perception and structuring, 1 credit
• 3-4 days workshop on the use of space and place in the devising of a
performance.
• 6 hours of lecturing + interactive discussions + exercises and demos.
• The course has taken place every year since 2007.
