How did you
attract/address your
audience?
By Laura Naylor!
Research!
In order to find out what would attract my audience to my
magazine, I had to do minor research into existing music
magazines. I looked at the way in which they portrayed the
diverse forms and conventions of a music magazine in order to
attract an audience. Magazines such as Top of the Pops and
We Love Pop are the magazines that I took the most
interested in as they are both based around the genre of Pop.
The layout in which both these magazines used are the type that
I used on my magazine in order to attract my audience as it’s
more appealing due to the fact that it has many different
pictures and the writing isn’t boring in a sense that would appeal
to my target audience.
Questionnaire!
Another way in which I attracted my target audience was through creating a small questionnaire that allowed me to understand what
aspects my target audience would like to see within my magazine. I have handed my questionnaire out to people in my school, other
schools and people within my local community in order to get a wide range of opinion. I also applied the secondary research that I
done from existing magazine to help influence my decision on what to market and focus my magazine on.
As you can see the first question allows me to identify whether they are male or female, in
order to compare the results with different social groups. My results showed that most of the
questionnaires were filled in by females.
I then asked how old a certain individual was, again my results showed me that the age range
was mostly 13-16 year olds, this was good as it was close to my target audience of 14+.
The next thing I focused on was what genre of music my audience mostly listened to and my
results showed that most of the audience preferred to listen to pop music therefore this
became the genre of my music magazine. I also chose this genre because statistics show that
pop music is most likely to be heard on the radio today than any other genre of music.
I then decided to ask if they currently read any types of magazines today and this lead to me
asking how often they buy music magazines, this gave me an idea of how often I should publish
my music magazine which lead to the conclusion of every two weeks.
I then gave my audience the choice of different prices that they would like to pay which lead to
my magazine be at the price of £1.50 because I wanted it to be a suitable price with it only being
a new magazine.
The next question was determining the masthead for my magazine which allowed my audience
to become involved within the magazine therefore leading to the title of Sound Of Pop.
I then allowed my audience to chose what colour scheme might appeal to them the most which
was light green, pink, purple and white.
I then asked my audience what freebies attracted them most to a magazine which was free make-up from an artists collection or a free
sample from anything that the artist brings out. Also the freebies is what mostly attracts certain individuals to a magazine.
They also had the choice of what would attract them to the magazine if they had the chance to win a competition and they decided that a
meet and greet with the artist would attract them the most.
Probably the most important question that was asked was what the audience members would like to see as the content within the
magazine, this would allow me to get a brief idea of what I should feature within the magazine and this was an interview with the artist.
All these aspects allowed me to get a rough idea of what my target audience would like to see within my magazine.
Masthead!
The masthead that I have used within my front cover is very unique and bold. It
stands out against the rest of the page in order to attract my target audiences
attention. I used a bright colours for the masthead to that it stands out and so
that it is evident that it is the main title of the page, this catches the readers
eye more. My masthead is set out in a diverse way compared to other music
magazine, it is not draped across the top like most music magazines however it
is placed in the corner in a bubble. I did this because it suggests that the music
is loud and entertaining. It is also inspiration from the magazine of We Love
Pop because they also place their masthead within a speech bubble. In my
opinion it is highly effective and catches the readers eye more, therefore this is
a large aspect in addressing and attracting the reader to my music magazine.
Colour Scheme!
The colour scheme for my magazine was difficult as my colour scheme has a huge influence on my
brand image, as costumers will associate a certain colour and logo with my brand that’s why
obtaining the perfect brand image is very important to companies. I looked at the psychology of
colours in which people are attracted to in order to get a better understanding of the implications
and associating it in which portrayed with particular colours, therefore allowing me to manipulate
certain ideologies of that colour onto my brand image. From my research I found that the younger
demographics tent to opt for bright and bold colours which can grab their attention quickly.
Whereas older demographics tend to go for dimmer, darker colours which are gentler on the eyes
hence why a lot of magazines aimed at older demographics tend to have fewer colours and less
bright colours. My colour scheme used the colours of light green, pink, purple and white, the reason
for this is the connotations associated with the colours , these are seen as female colours and are
genuinely liked by a high percentage of females, I used these as these appeal to my target audience.
These colours are also bright and bold, again this attracts my target audience of young females.
This gives a high possibility of attracting my demographics that will be predominantly female;
however the use of the colours ensures a higher possibility of women purchasing my magazine over
men. Existing magazine also use this technique in attracting their target audience, for example Q
uses the house colours of red and white which is generally favourite by men and this is quite
reflective of their demographics.
Font!
The font that I have use if highly unique and different which could
make my audience more attracted to my magazine. The text that I
used was big, bold and bright in order to make it stand out above
the other text within the page. Within my music magazine I used a
different variety of fonts such as, Birch STD, Pristina, Monotype
Corsiva and Berlin Sans FB Demi. The way in which I chose the
colours of the writing for the Artists name, I used the colour from
her dress so that the model was actually connected to the page. I
also placed the text on a slant due to the fact that I took
inspiration from the We Love Pop music magazine as this enables
the text to have a slight aspect of pop, it also makes the text look
a lot more interesting, therefore I used this technique.
Language!
Another way in which I attracted my audience was through the use of language. In order to get a clearer view
of the language that is used within a magazine I looked at two different music magazines and compared them
at different age, social bracket etc. when looking at a magazine for younger demographics I notices that the
language used was more informal socialite and foal language, I became aware of how music magazine use
different socialite to relate and communicate effectively and reflectively to their readers. There were also
common references which a younger individual would be interested in or be able to relate to such as reference
to festivals, branded clothing and more. The magazine that was aimed at the older demographic used slightly
varies in their socialite, using a vast range of language which were formal but also using a little foreign
language which may be familiar to an older audience who have more likely travelled more around the world
learning different foreign sayings and words. After seeing this article that is for older demographics I
understood that this uses more formal language, but also unlike the magazine targeted at the younger
demographics, the older aged magazine does not focus on aspects such as clothing and branding but primarily
on the music and musicians. This distinctive but subtle variation allowed me to notice how I could attract and
appeal to my target audience more by seeing the standards in which they expect by learning and using these
simple techniques, I allow my magazine to portray professionalism by addressing specific features expected by
my target audience of young females.
Within my magazine I used informal language and colloquial language in order to address my audience as it is
the best way to grab their attention. This type of language also allows them to relate to the magazine and can
understand it better than if it was very formal. It also allows the text to become more interesting rather than
boring for the readers. The use of exclamation marks make it that little bit more informal and this again
attracts the reader in a different way and grabs their attention.
Layout!
The layout of my magazine also attracts the audience in many different ways. The main image on my magazine is
the largest image on the cover and it is in the centre of the page which attracts the readers attention to the
magazine as it stands out. The masthead on the page is bright and colourful so that it attracts the audience even
more. All of the subheadings and the cover lines are justified to the side apart from the name Ariana Renee, this is
due to the fact I have took inspiration from the magazine We Love Pop where they place the name of the artist on
a slant and in the middle of the page, this is used to attract the readers even more and the artist name is right in
the readers face which attracts them to buy the magazine even more. I have also applied a banner at the bottom
of my cover page which includes other stories within the magazine and exclusive items that may be included
within the magazine which is again a good way to attract the readers attention. The article on the double page
spread is split into columns to make it look like there is less text than there really is, I did this so the readers will
take more interest in reading the article. I have took high inspiration from the magazine of We Love Pop in terms
of the layout so that my magazine will appeal to my target audience.
Choice of Representation!
Within my magazine I decided to add adverts and important information
to represent my target audience. The adverts I chose to include within my
magazine reflect what my target audience would buy. The informal
language and mode of address also represents my target audience by the
props used and the way in which my model chooses to stand. I also
included a reader profile for my magazine which allows me to show off
what my target audience might buy and it also includes very important
information about the magazine.
Naomi Wolf’s Beauty Myth!
Naomi Wolf, the American feminist (1991), says that images of attractive women are used to help sell products to other
women. This means that woman have been conditioned into aspiring to be like what is fashionably now, by a male
dominated society.
Within my magazine I have used many females and my main image on the front cover of the magazine, therefore Naomi
Wolf’s theory extremely applies to my magazine. This is another way in which I attract my target audience. The females
are represented as sexually attractive women which attract to my target audience of teenage girls to buy my magazine
because they want to be like the attractive people on the magazine.
Naomi Wolf created a book entitled ‘The Beauty Myth’ to tell everyone how a woman feels about themselves when
magazines are feeding insecurities about not being thin. Magazine companies and newspapers achieve this by having an
almost nude, sexy looking facial expression, a gorgeous female, thin and airbrushed models being used as a source to grab
the readers attention. In most cases when women are used, female readers usually pick out their own faults as they
compare themselves with the models being used on the cover. These poses also suggest that female sexuality is replaced
by the means of beauty, and showing that women are putting themselves in competition with each other and is often
positioned against one another, yet women don't see their bodies as a source of pleasure. For my magazine, I will be using
images of females on my front cover, as well as my double page spread. They are represented as joyful, happy and
attractive characters to attract my target audience of teenage girls because they want to be like the attractive individuals
on the cover, therefore this attracts more people. By using attractive women on my magazine I will be exploiting Naomi
Wolf's theory that an attractive model is used to sell a product by leading women to think that if they buy the product,
they will enhance their looks to look like the model on the cover.
Marjorie Ferguson’s Theory!
Marjorie Ferguson has different ways in which female models use their faces for different emotions.
This emotion is known as the Super Smiler, this uses the full face and has a wide open smile
with visible teeth. The model often looks happy and is giving of a good vibe. The head is
slightly forward and the chin is back. The hair will often be wind swept or blown and this
gives of a 'Look at me' approach.
The second emotion is known as the Chocolate Box, this is when a model has a half or full-smile,
their lips are together or can be slightly parted with teeth barely visible, they turn their face
fully or three quarters towards the camera.
Projected Mood: This facial expression creates a warm, bath warmth with uniformity of their
features which are smoothed to perfection which is a devoid of uniqueness or of individuality.
The invitational facial expression is when the focus is emphasised on the eyes. The model often
uses a closed mouth with only a hint of a smile and their teeth are barely showing at times and
their head is to one side, slightly. This expression creates a more suggestive mood and gives a
sense of mischief or mystery, the use of contact is potential rather that creating a sexual
promise.
This facial expression is dreamy, heavy-lidded and unsmiling. It is overtly sensual or sexual. The
clothing that is used on the model is often limited and props are sometimes used.
Projected Mood: The mood that this look creates is dreamy and gives the sense that the
model is 'available' and definitely 'available.'
Marjorie Ferguson’s Uses and Gratifications!
The approaches to the Uses and Gratifications theory usually focuses on why people use particular media rather than on context. In
contrast to the concern of the ‘Media Effects’ tradition with ‘what media do to people.’ Uses and Gratification can be seen as part of
part of a boarder trend amongst media researchers which is more concerned with ‘what people do with media,’ allowing for a
variety of responses and interpretations. Uses and Gratifications suggest that the audience actively use media products and
magazines to meet some of the needs identified. Magazines may be used by the audience to compensate for the lack of self esteem
or social success, as an example of the girls’ teenage lifestyle magazine, which address the audience as a ‘best friend’ rather than an
authoritative figure.
Escapism: This is where music
magazines and websites offer the
audience an escape from their
normal everyday life. It allows them
to get involved with artists and their
stories. By doing this, they can get
carried away with the drama and
fascination of other people’s lives
rather than think about their own.
Diversion: This is also
known as escapism, it
involves the user
consuming media in order
to escape from the
problems within their own
lives. Media allows the
viewer to focus on what
they are watching or
reading, instead of
personally effecting them.
This could involve someone
watching or reading an up
beat story or programme to
cheer them up or
watching/reading
something miserable, and
thinking ‘at least my life’s
not that bad,’ the diversion
model also includes people
consuming media for
relaxation or
entertainment purposes.
Surveillance and Information: Music
magazines and websites provides various
kinds of information about music, artists and
the music business. Surveillance relates to
the need know what is going on around you.
This leaves the viewers feeling safer due to
the fact that they are aware of what is going
on around them. The surveillance model is
most often used in relation to the news. The
news is often filled with the stories of
tragedy, after watching these stories the
viewers are left feeling more secure about
their own lives.
Personal Relationships: The target audience
of a magazine are usually more able to talk
to other people amongst themselves about
music, artists as well as upcoming events.
Users often consume media as a form of
companionship, developing relationships
with onscreen characters.
Personal Identity: This is the ability
to compare one’s own life with the
life of an onscreen character that is
the same situation as them. Viewers
may learn how to deal or not to deal
with this situation, by watching how
the characters deal with it.
Alternatively, it might help the
viewer come to terms with their own
similar situation and be able to
express it.

How I attracted my music magazine audience

  • 1. How did you attract/address your audience? By Laura Naylor!
  • 2. Research! In order to find out what would attract my audience to my magazine, I had to do minor research into existing music magazines. I looked at the way in which they portrayed the diverse forms and conventions of a music magazine in order to attract an audience. Magazines such as Top of the Pops and We Love Pop are the magazines that I took the most interested in as they are both based around the genre of Pop. The layout in which both these magazines used are the type that I used on my magazine in order to attract my audience as it’s more appealing due to the fact that it has many different pictures and the writing isn’t boring in a sense that would appeal to my target audience.
  • 3. Questionnaire! Another way in which I attracted my target audience was through creating a small questionnaire that allowed me to understand what aspects my target audience would like to see within my magazine. I have handed my questionnaire out to people in my school, other schools and people within my local community in order to get a wide range of opinion. I also applied the secondary research that I done from existing magazine to help influence my decision on what to market and focus my magazine on. As you can see the first question allows me to identify whether they are male or female, in order to compare the results with different social groups. My results showed that most of the questionnaires were filled in by females. I then asked how old a certain individual was, again my results showed me that the age range was mostly 13-16 year olds, this was good as it was close to my target audience of 14+. The next thing I focused on was what genre of music my audience mostly listened to and my results showed that most of the audience preferred to listen to pop music therefore this became the genre of my music magazine. I also chose this genre because statistics show that pop music is most likely to be heard on the radio today than any other genre of music. I then decided to ask if they currently read any types of magazines today and this lead to me asking how often they buy music magazines, this gave me an idea of how often I should publish my music magazine which lead to the conclusion of every two weeks. I then gave my audience the choice of different prices that they would like to pay which lead to my magazine be at the price of £1.50 because I wanted it to be a suitable price with it only being a new magazine. The next question was determining the masthead for my magazine which allowed my audience to become involved within the magazine therefore leading to the title of Sound Of Pop. I then allowed my audience to chose what colour scheme might appeal to them the most which was light green, pink, purple and white. I then asked my audience what freebies attracted them most to a magazine which was free make-up from an artists collection or a free sample from anything that the artist brings out. Also the freebies is what mostly attracts certain individuals to a magazine. They also had the choice of what would attract them to the magazine if they had the chance to win a competition and they decided that a meet and greet with the artist would attract them the most. Probably the most important question that was asked was what the audience members would like to see as the content within the magazine, this would allow me to get a brief idea of what I should feature within the magazine and this was an interview with the artist. All these aspects allowed me to get a rough idea of what my target audience would like to see within my magazine.
  • 4. Masthead! The masthead that I have used within my front cover is very unique and bold. It stands out against the rest of the page in order to attract my target audiences attention. I used a bright colours for the masthead to that it stands out and so that it is evident that it is the main title of the page, this catches the readers eye more. My masthead is set out in a diverse way compared to other music magazine, it is not draped across the top like most music magazines however it is placed in the corner in a bubble. I did this because it suggests that the music is loud and entertaining. It is also inspiration from the magazine of We Love Pop because they also place their masthead within a speech bubble. In my opinion it is highly effective and catches the readers eye more, therefore this is a large aspect in addressing and attracting the reader to my music magazine.
  • 5. Colour Scheme! The colour scheme for my magazine was difficult as my colour scheme has a huge influence on my brand image, as costumers will associate a certain colour and logo with my brand that’s why obtaining the perfect brand image is very important to companies. I looked at the psychology of colours in which people are attracted to in order to get a better understanding of the implications and associating it in which portrayed with particular colours, therefore allowing me to manipulate certain ideologies of that colour onto my brand image. From my research I found that the younger demographics tent to opt for bright and bold colours which can grab their attention quickly. Whereas older demographics tend to go for dimmer, darker colours which are gentler on the eyes hence why a lot of magazines aimed at older demographics tend to have fewer colours and less bright colours. My colour scheme used the colours of light green, pink, purple and white, the reason for this is the connotations associated with the colours , these are seen as female colours and are genuinely liked by a high percentage of females, I used these as these appeal to my target audience. These colours are also bright and bold, again this attracts my target audience of young females. This gives a high possibility of attracting my demographics that will be predominantly female; however the use of the colours ensures a higher possibility of women purchasing my magazine over men. Existing magazine also use this technique in attracting their target audience, for example Q uses the house colours of red and white which is generally favourite by men and this is quite reflective of their demographics.
  • 6. Font! The font that I have use if highly unique and different which could make my audience more attracted to my magazine. The text that I used was big, bold and bright in order to make it stand out above the other text within the page. Within my music magazine I used a different variety of fonts such as, Birch STD, Pristina, Monotype Corsiva and Berlin Sans FB Demi. The way in which I chose the colours of the writing for the Artists name, I used the colour from her dress so that the model was actually connected to the page. I also placed the text on a slant due to the fact that I took inspiration from the We Love Pop music magazine as this enables the text to have a slight aspect of pop, it also makes the text look a lot more interesting, therefore I used this technique.
  • 7. Language! Another way in which I attracted my audience was through the use of language. In order to get a clearer view of the language that is used within a magazine I looked at two different music magazines and compared them at different age, social bracket etc. when looking at a magazine for younger demographics I notices that the language used was more informal socialite and foal language, I became aware of how music magazine use different socialite to relate and communicate effectively and reflectively to their readers. There were also common references which a younger individual would be interested in or be able to relate to such as reference to festivals, branded clothing and more. The magazine that was aimed at the older demographic used slightly varies in their socialite, using a vast range of language which were formal but also using a little foreign language which may be familiar to an older audience who have more likely travelled more around the world learning different foreign sayings and words. After seeing this article that is for older demographics I understood that this uses more formal language, but also unlike the magazine targeted at the younger demographics, the older aged magazine does not focus on aspects such as clothing and branding but primarily on the music and musicians. This distinctive but subtle variation allowed me to notice how I could attract and appeal to my target audience more by seeing the standards in which they expect by learning and using these simple techniques, I allow my magazine to portray professionalism by addressing specific features expected by my target audience of young females. Within my magazine I used informal language and colloquial language in order to address my audience as it is the best way to grab their attention. This type of language also allows them to relate to the magazine and can understand it better than if it was very formal. It also allows the text to become more interesting rather than boring for the readers. The use of exclamation marks make it that little bit more informal and this again attracts the reader in a different way and grabs their attention.
  • 8. Layout! The layout of my magazine also attracts the audience in many different ways. The main image on my magazine is the largest image on the cover and it is in the centre of the page which attracts the readers attention to the magazine as it stands out. The masthead on the page is bright and colourful so that it attracts the audience even more. All of the subheadings and the cover lines are justified to the side apart from the name Ariana Renee, this is due to the fact I have took inspiration from the magazine We Love Pop where they place the name of the artist on a slant and in the middle of the page, this is used to attract the readers even more and the artist name is right in the readers face which attracts them to buy the magazine even more. I have also applied a banner at the bottom of my cover page which includes other stories within the magazine and exclusive items that may be included within the magazine which is again a good way to attract the readers attention. The article on the double page spread is split into columns to make it look like there is less text than there really is, I did this so the readers will take more interest in reading the article. I have took high inspiration from the magazine of We Love Pop in terms of the layout so that my magazine will appeal to my target audience.
  • 9. Choice of Representation! Within my magazine I decided to add adverts and important information to represent my target audience. The adverts I chose to include within my magazine reflect what my target audience would buy. The informal language and mode of address also represents my target audience by the props used and the way in which my model chooses to stand. I also included a reader profile for my magazine which allows me to show off what my target audience might buy and it also includes very important information about the magazine.
  • 10. Naomi Wolf’s Beauty Myth! Naomi Wolf, the American feminist (1991), says that images of attractive women are used to help sell products to other women. This means that woman have been conditioned into aspiring to be like what is fashionably now, by a male dominated society. Within my magazine I have used many females and my main image on the front cover of the magazine, therefore Naomi Wolf’s theory extremely applies to my magazine. This is another way in which I attract my target audience. The females are represented as sexually attractive women which attract to my target audience of teenage girls to buy my magazine because they want to be like the attractive people on the magazine. Naomi Wolf created a book entitled ‘The Beauty Myth’ to tell everyone how a woman feels about themselves when magazines are feeding insecurities about not being thin. Magazine companies and newspapers achieve this by having an almost nude, sexy looking facial expression, a gorgeous female, thin and airbrushed models being used as a source to grab the readers attention. In most cases when women are used, female readers usually pick out their own faults as they compare themselves with the models being used on the cover. These poses also suggest that female sexuality is replaced by the means of beauty, and showing that women are putting themselves in competition with each other and is often positioned against one another, yet women don't see their bodies as a source of pleasure. For my magazine, I will be using images of females on my front cover, as well as my double page spread. They are represented as joyful, happy and attractive characters to attract my target audience of teenage girls because they want to be like the attractive individuals on the cover, therefore this attracts more people. By using attractive women on my magazine I will be exploiting Naomi Wolf's theory that an attractive model is used to sell a product by leading women to think that if they buy the product, they will enhance their looks to look like the model on the cover.
  • 11. Marjorie Ferguson’s Theory! Marjorie Ferguson has different ways in which female models use their faces for different emotions. This emotion is known as the Super Smiler, this uses the full face and has a wide open smile with visible teeth. The model often looks happy and is giving of a good vibe. The head is slightly forward and the chin is back. The hair will often be wind swept or blown and this gives of a 'Look at me' approach. The second emotion is known as the Chocolate Box, this is when a model has a half or full-smile, their lips are together or can be slightly parted with teeth barely visible, they turn their face fully or three quarters towards the camera. Projected Mood: This facial expression creates a warm, bath warmth with uniformity of their features which are smoothed to perfection which is a devoid of uniqueness or of individuality. The invitational facial expression is when the focus is emphasised on the eyes. The model often uses a closed mouth with only a hint of a smile and their teeth are barely showing at times and their head is to one side, slightly. This expression creates a more suggestive mood and gives a sense of mischief or mystery, the use of contact is potential rather that creating a sexual promise. This facial expression is dreamy, heavy-lidded and unsmiling. It is overtly sensual or sexual. The clothing that is used on the model is often limited and props are sometimes used. Projected Mood: The mood that this look creates is dreamy and gives the sense that the model is 'available' and definitely 'available.'
  • 12. Marjorie Ferguson’s Uses and Gratifications! The approaches to the Uses and Gratifications theory usually focuses on why people use particular media rather than on context. In contrast to the concern of the ‘Media Effects’ tradition with ‘what media do to people.’ Uses and Gratification can be seen as part of part of a boarder trend amongst media researchers which is more concerned with ‘what people do with media,’ allowing for a variety of responses and interpretations. Uses and Gratifications suggest that the audience actively use media products and magazines to meet some of the needs identified. Magazines may be used by the audience to compensate for the lack of self esteem or social success, as an example of the girls’ teenage lifestyle magazine, which address the audience as a ‘best friend’ rather than an authoritative figure. Escapism: This is where music magazines and websites offer the audience an escape from their normal everyday life. It allows them to get involved with artists and their stories. By doing this, they can get carried away with the drama and fascination of other people’s lives rather than think about their own. Diversion: This is also known as escapism, it involves the user consuming media in order to escape from the problems within their own lives. Media allows the viewer to focus on what they are watching or reading, instead of personally effecting them. This could involve someone watching or reading an up beat story or programme to cheer them up or watching/reading something miserable, and thinking ‘at least my life’s not that bad,’ the diversion model also includes people consuming media for relaxation or entertainment purposes. Surveillance and Information: Music magazines and websites provides various kinds of information about music, artists and the music business. Surveillance relates to the need know what is going on around you. This leaves the viewers feeling safer due to the fact that they are aware of what is going on around them. The surveillance model is most often used in relation to the news. The news is often filled with the stories of tragedy, after watching these stories the viewers are left feeling more secure about their own lives. Personal Relationships: The target audience of a magazine are usually more able to talk to other people amongst themselves about music, artists as well as upcoming events. Users often consume media as a form of companionship, developing relationships with onscreen characters. Personal Identity: This is the ability to compare one’s own life with the life of an onscreen character that is the same situation as them. Viewers may learn how to deal or not to deal with this situation, by watching how the characters deal with it. Alternatively, it might help the viewer come to terms with their own similar situation and be able to express it.
