3. THE BASIC STRUCTURE
OF A FILM…
A basic 90 minute film will have a structure of
1,2,3,4,5.
A two hour long film will have a structure of
1,2,3,4,2,3,4,5.
4. THE MAIN NARRATIVE
THEMES.
Anachronic Structure: modular narrative that involves the use of
flashbacks and/or flash-forwards with no clear dominance between the narrative
threads. These threads will often repeat scenes directly or through a different
perspective.
Forking Path: This is when narratives juxtapose alternative versions of the
story , showing the possible outcomes that might result from small changes within
a single event or group of events. This narrative introduces a number of plotlines
which usually contradict one another.
5. THE MAIN NARRATIVE
THEMES.
Episodic Structure: These narratives are organised as an abstract series or
narrative anthology. Abstract series is a type of modular narrative which is
characterised through the operation of non-narrative formal systems which appear
to dictate the organisation of narrative elements such as a sequence of numbers
or the alphabet.
Split Screen: This is a different narrative as this modularity is articulate
along spatial rather than temporal lines. These are films which divide the screen
into two or more frames, juxtaposing events within the same visual field, in a
sustained fashion.
