telephone surveillance of
Bulger's brothers. He informed
Weeks, who in turn informed
Bulger. When, two months later,
Weeks was arrested on
racketeering charges, he began
cooperating with the authorities,
which included helping to find
the bodies of six gang victims and
giving up Schneiderhan
Former Bulger associate Kevin
Weeks is arrested on
racketeering charges reportedly
after learning Bulger served as
informants. Weeks eventually
cooperates with investigators,
leading them to the burial sites
of several of Bulger's alleged
victims.

August: Added to the FBI's Top
10 Most Wanted list, facing
charges in 19 murders.
November: Weeks and another
longtime Bulger associate, Kevin
O'Neil, are indicted on federal
racketeering charges. Bulger
loses his trusted confidante and
primary contact in South Boston
as Weeks begins cooperating
almost immediately, helping
authorities build a murder case
against Bulger.
December 2nd: Bulger's longtime
handler, retired FBI agent John J.
Connolly Jr., is indicted on

federal racketeering charges. He
was later convicted of warning
Bulger about his indictment and
is serving a 10-year prison term.
2000 January: Greig is spotted at a hair
salon in Fountain Valley, Calif.,
where she had her hair dyed
while Bulger waited in a car
parked outside.
September: A new sweeping
federal indictment brought in US
District Court in Boston charges
Bulger with killing 19 people
between 1973 and 1985,
including murders in Florida and
Oklahoma, two states that carry
the death penalty. Flemmi is
charged with killing nine people
and later pleads guilty. He is
sentenced to life in prison and is
currently cooperating with the
government.
Testimony by Bulger’s friend and
associate Kevin Weeks leads to
the discovery of five bodies,
spread around Dorchester and
Quincy. Some were rivals of
Bulger, some were personal
acquaintances or girlfriends, not
involved in criminal activities.

November 29: The FBI ups its
reward for Bulger from $250,000
to $1 million.

British businessman who had
met him years earlier.
PD’s notes 2002: there was a good
lead in London. He was known to
travel to London, as he had money
there. Would stay at the Ritz on
Piccadilly. There was a credible
witness sighting down there, so they
went to check it out… (what
happened?) There were a number
of leads in London, and thinking that
he was well connected to a British
crime family.

2003 February: A credible sighting of
Bulger is reported in Manchester,
England, according to the FBI.
June: William Bulger testifies
before a congressional
committee investigating the FBI’s
ties to mobster informants such
as his brother. After receiving
immunity, he acknowledged
receiving a call from Whitey
shortly after he fled, but said he
has not heard from him since
and has no idea where he is.
August- William Bulger resigns as
president of the University of
Massachusetts system amid
growing pressure

leads and Bulger look-alikes in at
least 19 countries.
2006 Authorities release 26-year-old
surveillance video of Bulger in
the hope that someone will
recognize his mannerisms.
PD’s Notes- 2006: Mexico, Alajice
– an expat community of
Americans. They got a lead that
Whitey had dental work. They went
down there and linked up with the
Mexican police. Carried out
surveillance, set up cameras,
interviewed many people. (He may
have even been from Boston)!
Finally they surrounded his house,
and knocked on the door. When he
came out, he looked just like Bulger
- but he looked like everyone. He
said to them “I was expecting you’,
because he knew he looked similar.
2007

on vacation sees them and videos.
Took 5 months to work out who
they were. It was all about
leveraging the media in the end.
They publicised the photos
worldwide – London, Spain, then by
early 2008 in Germany.
August 2007: James William Lawlor
dies, the LA Coroner listed cause of
death heart disease.
Bulger had a lot of ID’s, and in Santa
Monica he befriended a homeless
person called James Lawlor who
looks just like him. He took all his
ID’s, in return for an apartment in
West Hollywood. He took lawlor’s
name.
Bulger’s most important alter ego
belonged to James William Lawlor, a
destitute alcoholic with a
resemblance to the gangster who
gave Bulger his California driver’s
license in exchange for money to
pay the rent at a cheap motel.
When Bulger needed to buy
prescription drugs, drive a car, or
dip into a bank account, he became
Lawlor, even changing the man’s
height and eye color on a state-
issued identification card to match
his features.

2009 August: Search focuses on
Florida after several sightings —
none confirmed — were
reported in Clearwater,
Jacksonville, Kissimmee, and
Daytona Beach.
PD Notes- 2009/2010: They had
been looking for years for the
photos of Catherine before and
after surgery. They’d tried every
plastic sugeon in the area.. and
eventually (After 10 years) found
one that had the images. They used
these images to put ads in
newspaper, trade papers especially
in the dental/plastic Surgery. They
wanted the image to go viral and it
really did.
They put it on Times Square
billboard and other billboards. On
local TV all over the place. It spread
on youtube.

was published by the press as being
Anna Bjomsdittor, but they have
never confirmed this. They protect
their sources.
PD’s notes: After he was arrested,
we spent the whole flight back to
Boston listening to him as he told
his whole story – he spilled his guts
about where he’d been for the past
16 years – as if he’d been dying to
tell it. (it’s recorded in notes, but
not audio). But now they know
where he was the whole time –
they’ve learned lots about fugitives
from capturing such a long-gone
one.
