Autumn Foodways Cross-Quarter Time presentation for my Autumn Cultural Foodways share event, the premiere of my "Seasonally Sumptuous" series featuring cultural foodways insights and sharing around annual observances and holidays.
3. End of October
Spring in the Southern Hemisphere
Weather and agriculture varies around the globe
My intro perspective – westernized American
4. Cross-Quarter
Between Autumnal Equinox and Winter Solstice
“Hallows Eve”
originated with the ancient Celtic (Irish)
“festival of Samhain,
when people would light bonfires and
wear costumes to ward off ghost”

5. Cross-Quarter
How pumpkins became Jack-O-Lanterns in the “New World”
“jack-o'-lanterns originated in Ireland, with large turnips and
potatoes. In England, large beets are used. Immigrants from these
countries brought the jack-o’-lantern tradition with them when they
came to the United States. They soon found that pumpkins, a fruit
native to America, make perfect jack-o’-lanterns.”

6. “Trick or Treat”
• Odd custom – dress up unrecognizable, bang on neighbors’ doors
demanding treats or you will do a “trick”
• In some (many?) neighborhoods, can actually be a very good way
for neighbors to mingle while kids have fun
• What happens to all that candy???
7. My Memories
• Old enough to trick-or-treat with friends
• Came home and traded
• 5 Snickers for one Heath!
• Candy disappeared, doled out in packed lunches,
disappeared by All Saint’s Day, lasted until Easter
8. • Today – kids have many “Special occasions” for indulgent treats –
birthdays, holidays
• Give to Food Banks/Pantries? – they struggle to provide healthy
balanced nutritious foods/meals and often serve populations with
special needs
• Donate to Military? – they have healthy goals too
• Dentists – gift certificates? Who ultimately gets?
9. I saw this! Just can’t find it
Bite-size candy attached to a fluorescent pencil
Introduced one year in response to candy/excess sugar concerns
10. • Fun evening for neighbors to mingle and socialize on a cool
Autumn night
• Collecting candy is the tradition
• Ongong challenge – valued tradition that can foster community
spirit but associated food we can do without!
11. Warning – next slide, darken screen if you
• Do not like gross-looking things
• Are eating and can’t stomach it
• Next slide ha nothing gruesome about human body parts
• But does have some Halloween (gross) tricks on serving food
Ready?!?
