Food Scares Food scares in the media have a dramatic influence on food choice and sometimes result in product sales dropping so dramatically that the company ceases to exist. Hovis were fined £17,000 after this food scare. A mouse was found in a loaf of bread. “ In July, the company, which makes Hovis bread, admitted to having failed to maintain acceptable standards at its British Bakeries site in London”
Food Scares Problems can occur when the animal is alive BSE is a condition that cows can contract, it affects their brains and behaviour. It is a risk to humans, if they consume infected meat they can contract a human strain of the disease. It is thought that 35 people died of contracting BSE. The sale of beef declined rapidly at this time.
Food Scares Foods can become a ‘food scare’ once the meat is at the factory or place where it will be sold. Health and safety must be of the highest standard. A butcher in Wales was responsible for a large outbreak of E.coli. Underline the key causes of the outbreak in the news story.
The role of the EHO (Environmental Health Officer) In groups use page 191 of the text book, sugar paper and pens to consider the role of the EHO. Would any of these powers helped to prevent the outbreak of E. coli in Wales? If so which ones?
