3. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, West Bengal
One of the oldest train routes in India, the Darjeeling Himalayan
Railway is operational since 1881.
Steering through steep rolling plains and breathtaking valleys, this train
journey promises you an unforgettable ride passing through 505
bridges, over its entire route of 80 kms.
The route runs from New Jalpaiguri railway station in West Bengal to
Darjeeling via Siliguri, Kurseong, and Ghum.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway makes steep climbs through a
number of reverses and loops, one of the most breathtaking being the
Batasia Loop between Ghum and Darjeeling.

5. Kalka-Shimla Railway, Himachal Pradesh
Constructed in 1903 as an easy access to reach the erstwhile summer
capital of British rulers.
Kalka-Shimla toy train passes through verdant valleys lined with pine
and oak trees for 96 kms through 20 railway stations, 103 tunnels, 800
bridges, and an incredible 900 curves lasting the journey for 5 hours.
The last tunnel #103 is considered to be the longest and one of the
most haunted tunnels in India.
On 8th July 2008, , the Kalka-Shimla Railway became part of the World
Heritage Site & Mountain railways of India
7. Nilgiri Mountain Railway, Tamil Nadu
The 46 kms route starting from Mettupalayam in Coimbatore to Ooty
via Coonoor was completed in 1908 after a rigorous hard-work through
thick and hilly forests.
The train meanders through lush green valleys and steep curves
consisting of 250 bridges and 16 tunnels.
Nilgiri Mountain Railway is famous for the song Chaiyya
Chaiyya from Dil Se. You can experience this bliss on a holiday to
Ooty.
In Jul 2005, UNESCO added the Nilgiri Mountain Railway as an
extension to the World Heritage Site & Mountain Railways of India.
9. Matheran Hill Railway, Maharashtra
A narrow train route of 21 kms carved through the verdant valleys of
Western Ghats was completed in the year 1907.
Although the route is small, the journey takes around two and a half
hours from its starting point in Neral, located between Matheran and
Pune.
There are talks about UNESCO considering the prospect of assigning
the world heritage status to Matheran Hill Railway.

output of 130 horsepower producing top speed of 40 kmph
Built for the 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) Indian meter guage &
has a 2-2-2 wheel arrangement

Owned by East Indian Railway Company.
Reached Kolkata in the year 1855.
Given a fleet number “21 & 22” by its owner.
Initially the locomotive hauled light mail trains in West
Bengal, running from Howrah to Raniganj.
Hauled troop trains during the Indian rebellion of 1857.
Later consigned to line construction duty in Bihar, where
it served until 1909.
14. Recognitions
Certified by the Guinness Book of Records in 1998 as the
world’s oldest steam locomotive in regular operation.
The train received a National Tourism Award for the most
innovative and unique tourism project in 1999.
15. Steam Locomotive- WP 7161
Built at Chittranjan Locomotive Workshop in 1965 & easily
recognized by its cone shaped bulging nose ,with a silver
star devise painted on it.
The train trip has been named as Steam Express Tour &
departs every 2nd & 4th Saturday morning from New Delhi
to Alwar.
