Kempton and Layne (1994) draw the analogy that this likens to shopping at a grocery store where the goods are not marked with individual prices and the only feedback received about purchasing is through a monthly bill which provides one, aggregate total cost (e.g., “You spent $527 for 2362 food units in April”). This level of information makes it difficult to economize and judge the relative merits of individual conservation practices (Dennis, 1990).

Modeling physical activity propagation, such as the activity level and intensity, is the key to prevent the cascades of obesity, and help spread wellness and healthy behavior in a social network. However, there has been lacking of scientific and quantitative study to elucidate how social communication may deliver physical activity interventions. In this work we introduce a Community-level Physical Activity Propagation (CPP) model to analyze physical activity propagation and social influence at different granularities (i.e., individual level and community level). CPP is a novel model which is inspired by the well-known Independent Cascade and Community-level Social Influence models. Given a social network, we utilize a hierarchical approach to detect a set of communities and their reciprocal influence strength of physical activities. CPP provides a powerful tool to discover, summarize, and investigate influence patterns of physical activities in a health social network. The detail experimental evaluation shows not only the effectiveness of our approach but also the correlation of the detected communities with various health outcome measures (i.e., both existing ones and our novel measure, named Wellness score, which is a combination of lifestyle parameters, biometrics, and biomarkers). Our promising results potentially pave a way for knowledge discovery in health social networks. NhatHai Phan CIS Department, University of Oregon, Eugene, OR

Due to the high utility costs in Cabanatuan City, the solar panel system is rapidly approaching. People in the middle and lower income classes of the country particularly feel the effects of inflation. In order to address the ongoing rise in oil prices and pollution, the government has made the development of renewable energy one of its top priorities. In order to help consumers reduce their utility costs, save money, and produce greener energy, a study on the installation of a solar panel system at home was carried out. The researchers gathered some data from consumers to be utilized as the basis for the contractors' computations, where the adoption of a 3kw on-grid solar panel system was recommended to those respondents with power bills under ₱2,400. The project costs approximately ₱150,000 in total, including installation and permits, and can save approximately ₱2,300 monthly. This investment has a 5.4-year payback period and a total savings of ₱402,000 over a 20-year period. The consumption analysis revealed a sensitive effect on savings and investment payback periods. The study proved that the project's long-term savings can be more than double the initial investment. A SWOT analysis was also performed to highlight the advantages and disadvantages of having an on-grid solar panel, as well as the benefits of clean energy and gas reduction in our environment that future generations could benefit from. The project's cost-benefit is a win-win investment for everyone who wants to save money while also enjoying cleaner air in the long run.

Researches indicate that energy behaviour is the key to energy conservation and suggest that comparative feedback on energy usage can generate savings in residential and organizational settings. In implementing comparative feedback in workplace, there are two different ways to disaggregate collective energy consumption and apportion it to building users; individual or group level. This research uses agent-based modelling and simulation to examine the impact of applying different approaches of energy data apportionment to change staff behaviour toward energy consumption reduction. A simulation model of energy consumption in workplace as a base model is a re-implementation and simplification from former research. Several psychological factors and decision-making mechanism are then being added as an extension. The model divides staffs into four energy awareness stereotypes based on motivation level. Sensitivity analysis suggests that motivation is an important factor in changing user’s behaviour and the experiment results indicates greater potential for energy saving when energy usage is apportioned to group level. The significant difference of energy consumption level makes user with low and medium motivation should become the target of energy reduction campaign.

Social Electricity is a Facebook application that aims to make citizens aware of their electrical energy consumption, by means of comparisons with the corresponding electrical consumption of their friends, as well as with the total consumption in the street / neighbourhood / village / city / country where they live. By effective and realistic comparisons, the consumers may perceive their energy behaviour and take steps to reduce their electricity and carbon footprint. Moreover, people may view statistics concerning the areas with the least/most energy consumption in their neighborhood, province or even the whole of Cyprus. These slides have been presented by Andreas Kamilaris during the 2nd ITU Green Standards Week, in Paris, France, on 19 September 2012, in an award ceremony for the best and most innovative Concept Paper for a “Sustainable Energy for All” ICT application. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is the United Nations specialized agency for information and communication technologies (ICTs). Social Electricity presents high interest due to its innovation, usefulness and smart design. It constitutes a research project of the Computer Science Department, University of Cyprus, in collaboration with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC), aiming to motivate people to become more aware of their electricity consumption. Social Electricity is an innovative initiative worldwide and has recently been awarded the first prize in the 2nd ITU Green ICT Application Challenge (http://www.itu.int/ITU-T/climatechange/greenict/201206/index.html). Social Electricity is available at the link http://apps.facebook.com/socialelectricity/. You must have a Facebook account in order to use it and register a valid P.O. code in Cyprus (4-digit codes like 2302). You can LIKE our FB page to be informed about latest news of the project (https://www.facebook.com/SocialElectricity).

Mental and Emotional health difficulties are a leading cause of disability worldwide. Interestingly, studies have consistently shown that interpersonal relationships and social support can play a vital role in emotional health and wellbeing. Technologies that effectively support emotional wellbeing are likely to offer significant benefits, both for individuals and for society as a whole. This talk will discuss the potential of social media such as social networking sites, online games and mobile phone applications to provide social support for the emotional wellbeing of users, as well as the design constraints inherent in doing so. The EPSRC-funded project called "Exploring social Networks to Augment Cognitive behaviour Therapy (ENACT)," which is being lead by the Lincoln Social Computing research centre, will be discussed as an example of work in this field.

The presentation explores the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) from its inception to its current status in the modern world. The term "artificial intelligence" was first coined by John McCarthy in 1956 to describe efforts to develop computer programs capable of performing tasks that typically require human intelligence. This concept was first introduced at a conference held at Dartmouth College, where programs demonstrated capabilities such as playing chess, proving theorems, and interpreting texts. In the early stages, Alan Turing contributed to the field by defining intelligence as the ability of a being to respond to certain questions intelligently, proposing what is now known as the Turing Test to evaluate the presence of intelligent behavior in machines. As the decades progressed, AI evolved significantly. The 1980s focused on machine learning, teaching computers to learn from data, leading to the development of models that could improve their performance based on their experiences. The 1990s and 2000s saw further advances in algorithms and computational power, which allowed for more sophisticated data analysis techniques, including data mining. By the 2010s, the proliferation of big data and the refinement of deep learning techniques enabled AI to become mainstream. Notable milestones included the success of Google's AlphaGo and advancements in autonomous vehicles by companies like Tesla and Waymo. A major theme of the presentation is the application of generative AI, which has been used for tasks such as natural language text generation, translation, and question answering. Generative AI uses large datasets to train models that can then produce new, coherent pieces of text or other media. The presentation also discusses the ethical implications and the need for regulation in AI, highlighting issues such as privacy, bias, and the potential for misuse. These concerns have prompted calls for comprehensive regulations to ensure the safe and equitable use of AI technologies. Artificial intelligence has also played a significant role in healthcare, particularly highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic, where it was used in drug discovery, vaccine development, and analyzing the spread of the virus. The capabilities of AI in healthcare are vast, ranging from medical diagnostics to personalized medicine, demonstrating the technology's potential to revolutionize fields beyond just technical or consumer applications. In conclusion, AI continues to be a rapidly evolving field with significant implications for various aspects of society. The development from theoretical concepts to real-world applications illustrates both the potential benefits and the challenges that come with integrating advanced technologies into everyday life. The ongoing discussion about AI ethics and regulation underscores the importance of managing these technologies responsibly to maximize their their benefits while minimizing potential harms.
