publisher’s note
HELLO, MAY!
Well, we are off and running! I hope you all enjoyed the first
issue of High Desert Living. It was such a pleasure gathering the
content, meeting residents and business sponsors; sharing excite-
ment and enthusiasm together for your publication. My absolute
favorite part about being the publisher of High Desert Living
is the connections I make. I’m a connector at heart and always
have been. My husband says I should have been a news reporter
because I love asking questions and can strike up a conversation
with anyone. Or a radio DJ because I’m pretty darn good at music
trivia. I think I chose a great career, regardless. I have met some
amazing residents thus far and look forward to meeting you all in
the near and distant future. I love hearing your stories and why
you ultimately chose beautiful Bend and Tetherow as home.
I moved to Bend after graduating from the University of
California, Santa Barbara in 2009. After visiting friends that had
recently moved up, I instantly fell in love with Central Oregon
and never looked back to my native Californian roots. I’m sure
that sounds familiar to a lot of you! I have a blended family with
my husband, Christian, and our two kids, Sebastian (11) and Mirin
(9). I’m a compost fanatic and avid record collector, Led Zeppelin
being my most favorite band (although that is a very hard choice).

Graduating with an environmental studies degree, I am so hon-
ored to be working in a community “taking pride in preserving,
protecting, and helping our environment flourish.” This incredi-
ble “sustainability pledge” reads loud and clear in the Tetherow
landscape and the residents that share its preservation. Some
of the articles in this month’s issue highlight just that with our
young achievers, Bella and Colton, saving baby quail every
late spring and summer that get trapped in the storm drains or
helping them cross the roads safely up to the curb. Our family
spotlight, the Werner family, are outdoor enthusiasts to a T. They
love that they can be on trails in less than a 1/4 mile from their
backdoor. And our business sponsor spotlight, Nathan Wismer of
Nathan’s Custom Wood and Steel, lives on a ranch with his family
and 16 cows, nine goats, three dogs, a cat, and 11 chickens.
I’m looking forward to this spring and the inspiring days ahead.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out and share your ideas, feedback,
and suggestions. Happy Mother’s Day to all past, present, and
future Mommas! Enjoy the month of May.
All the best,

Cooper Art
and Abode:
Kristine is an
abstract artist
with a passion to
create spaces that
are refined, eclec-
tic, and modern
in their own way.
The combination
of combining the
vintage with the modern world is appealing to her,
and she isn’t afraid to mix patterns and colors in
a cohesive way. She draws her inspiration from
traveling, exploring mountains, and treasure hunt-
ing in local antique shops and salvage yards. Her
desire is to pull together spaces that aren’t just
aesthetic but are home.
Her artwork acts as a visual diary of her day-to-day
life. Thick layers of paint, vibrant colors, and play-
ful shapes transport you to a new dimension. She
knows a work is done when the piece invites the
eye to explore every inch of the canvas finding new
details. Each piece has a story behind what she was
thinking while painting, but she also wants viewers
to create and design their own unique story for the
artwork as well. Visit Kristine’s website

artwork and see where her next exhibition will be!

TETHEROW’SBABYQUAILRESCUERS!
Spring is here in the High Desert. One
of the many welcomed signs of spring
is the newborn wildlife that calls the
preserved Tetherow landscape home.
Between mid-June through August,
Bella and Colton have a busier sched-
ule protecting one in particular wild-
life resident, baby California quail.
Since 2017, Bella (14) and Colton (12)
have saved hundreds of quail just by
helping them cross the road. “We
have pulled over countless times,
stopped traffic, chased them to one
side, and lifted them up and put them
up on the sidewalk to go find their
momma.” The other challenge the
small hatchlings face crossing the
road is falling down the storm drains
when crossing the road or trying to
find a way up the high sidewalk curbs.
Because they can’t jump that high,
they travel along the side and unfortu-
nately fall in the drains. Fortunately,
Custom Tint:

Bella and Colton are rescuers at heart! They will
ride their bikes and check the drains at least twice
a day during the late spring and summer months.
When they leave for vacation or are out of town,
they ask their neighbors to help look while they are
away. “I love the baby quails and always feel sorry
for them, especially when they can’t jump the big
curbs in Tetherow,” Bella says. They have probably
pulled out over 50 baby quail in the drains. “Half of
them didn’t survive but some we pulled out made
it, or we found them soon after they fell in and they
were lucky.” When asked what do you do when you
find a quail in the drain, they simply replied: “It’s
super easy. If you find them in the drain, someone
has to jump in. It’s not that deep or gross and they
are usually dry. We just scoop them up and put
them together under a bush. Their momma will
hear them once they start making their sounds. No
gloves needed.”
To help prevent further quail casu-
alties, the Cox family created “quail
trails.” “ We gathered larger rocks
and/or pine cones and wood from
construction sites and made little
steps up to the Tetherow curves,
giving it a more ‘natural’ look.” These
quail trail steps help them cross the
road and safely step up to the tall
curves instead of falling into the
drains or becoming prey to blue jays.
To also prevent them from falling
down the drains, they asked for
permission to buy netting and put it
under the drain covers. “They said
yes, so that is what we did. We cut the
netting to cover the hole, lift the drain
cover, and put the netting under it.
It’s not an easy job by any means but
worth it.” And the Cox family sleeps a
lot better during the summer months
because of it!
The Cox family now resides in the
Highlands at Broken Top. “There are
no curbs, which is nice, but we still
have lots of storm drains. Now that
there are more houses and driveways
in Tetherow, it’s easier for them,
but there are still stretches where
they get stuck and can get run over
or fall in the drains, etc.” Their hope
is to have 2021 be the best year of
Tetherow quail hatchlings with more
community awareness. “Any animal
is worth saving and I would love it
if all the residents put ramps up for
the baby quails and check the storm
drains often,” says Colton. The sweet-
est call to action you can get.
Cox
BELLA & COLTON
Cox
With no momma in sight, Bella rescued the baby quail from the drains
and kept them dry and warm. They were then taken to an animal
sanctuary in Sisters, OR.

tetherow healthful living
Spring has sprung; have your allergies, too?
Written by Dr. Megan Carmichael, DACM, LAc
Central Oregon has a wonderful ability to produce an allergy
response at some point no matter what time of year it is. In my 16
years of living here, I don’t think I’ve met one person who hasn’t
gone unscathed from seasonal allergy symptoms. Juniper trees
are front runners, as they are indigenous and known to spread
pollen several times a year. Grass is prevalent in mid-spring
followed by several different weeds and trees that continue to
bloom throughout the year. Another special trait of Central
Oregon is the smoke haze of fire season where burned plants
become airborne.
An allergy is when you come into contact with a foreign substance
(allergen) that triggers an immune response. Examples include:
1. Skin rash or hives, red and flaky skin
2. Sinus infections
3. Difficult breathing, cough, tight chest, wheezing, shortness of
breath, allergy-induced asthma
4. Digestive issues
5. Sneezing
6.
Itchy nose, eyes, or mouth
7. Runny, stuffy nose
8.
Watery, red, gunky, swollen eyes
Here are a few things that you can do to stop suffering from your
allergies and enjoy the beautiful outdoors.
1. Wash your face. Specifically, your eyelashes before bed. The
pores on your face and eyelashes serve as little Petri dishes for
pollen to wreak havoc as you sleep.
• Improve Your Health
& The Family’s
• Strengthens your body’s
immune system naturally
• Acupuncture reduces stress,
anxiety, & depression.
• Sessions give relief from
acute & chronic pain from
wear & tear and injuries,
including headaches.
• Acupuncture increases gut
health, digestion function,
sleep regularity and allergies.
Dr. Megan Carmichael
DACM, LAc

2. Blow-dry your hair before bed or after being outside.
Pollen loves to attach to hair and irritate your face while you
sleep, staying on your pillow and blanket for returning nights.
3. Rinse your sinuses. Neti pot with saline solution on a
regular basis. I highly suggest that you do this in the morning
and after you get home. Neti potting will clean out your nasal
cavities and help prevent serious inflammation.
4. Consume local honey. This has been known to help decrease
allergy reactions by introducing small amounts of the allergen
and training the body that this substance is not dangerous.
5. Take Chinese herbs. Traditional Chinese medicine has mul-
tiple herbal formulas known to effectively regulate the immune
system. These formulas, when taken in preparation for the
upcoming allergy season, can greatly reduce or eliminate allergy
symptoms altogether. Chinese herbal medicine should only be
taken with the help of a licensed acupuncturist or herbalist.
6.
See your local NAET specialized acupuncturist. NAET
(Nambudripad allergy elimination technique) is a very successful
option for eliminating sensitivities and allergies. NAET uses the
combination of kinesiology muscle response testing, electromag-
netic fields, meridian points from Chinese medicine, and spinal
stimulation to reprogram the brain and nervous system to no
longer react to an allergen. Once the body accepts this repro-
gramming, the body heals itself and no longer suffers from aller-
gies. After an initial series of treatments, most patients receive
a couple of follow-up treatments each year before the allergy
season starts.
Being proactive is key with allergies. I am specialized in NAET,
please feel free to contact me to discuss your personal
allergy healthcare.
*Remember to consult your healthcare provider or licensed
professional before taking on new healthcare habits, especially to
prevent Rx complications.

Ted and Shannah’s story began in 2002. “We met online before
online dating was a ‘thing.’ We talked on the phone (again,
because texting was not easy with flip phones!) for an entire
summer because Shannah was interning in Napa, CA, and Ted
was working in Portland. When we finally met at the end of
August, three months later and thousands of dollars in cell phone
bills (again before unlimited calling), it was like meeting a long-
lost friend. The rest is history. We got married in July 2005 at
Timberline Lodge.”
The Werner family has lived in Bend for eight-and-a-half years,
and daughter, Hayley, and son, Teddy, were born here. They
moved to North Carolina in August of 2013 where they lived for 22
months and then returned to Portland where they resided for three
years to the date. “Circle of life has brought us back to Bend, where
we belong. We realized lifestyle trumped career and living our
outdoor passions was more important than chasing career aspira-
tions. We have been back in Bend since summer of 2018.” Ted and
Shannah picked Tetherow as their “final resting place” because of
its close proximity to the trails. “Ted can ride his bike out the back
door and be on the trails in less than ¼ mile!” Shannah can wake
up to a view of the mountains every day as long as it’s clear. And
it’s 22 minutes on a good day to Mt. Bachelor to ski.” They found
the perfect lot and then built their dream house.
Would you like to nominate a neighbor or yourself to be featured as our next
“Meet Your Neighbor”? Email us at lindsay.resendez@n2pub.com.
Ted attended Marquette University (BS in information technol-
ogy) and is a pre-sales manager for Pacific Northwest for Alteryx.
He enjoys mountain biking, hiking, and running. Shannah
attended Willamette University (BA in rhetoric and media
studies). She has been a certified personal trainer for almost 20
years and has worked at various gyms, including Athletic Club
of Bend, Title Boxing Club (North Carolina), and Stafford Hills
Club (Tualatin, OR). She currently is co-owner of BoXiT Fitness
Studios in Bend (personal trainer and class instructor). “I love
being a part of the Bend community and helping people of all fit-
ness levels stay healthy. You don’t have to be an amazing athlete
to live in Bend. You just have to appreciate all the things it has to
offer to keep you healthy! I love inspiring and empowering others
to be better versions of themselves through the studio.” When
Shannah is not in the studio she enjoys backcountry skiing, hik-
ing, biking, running, being outdoors, and traveling.
Hayley will be 12 this month (May). She is in the sixth grade and
loves swimming, skiing, soccer, and hanging out with her best
friend, Ella. She is passionate about animals and has read the
Harry Potter series almost five times all the way through and
takes great pride in antagonizing her brother. At age 9.5, Teddy
is in the fourth grade and enjoys skiing, soccer, biking, and their
sweet kittens, Jaxon and Leo, who are brothers. He is passionate
about astronomy and can name all the planets, their moons, and
other “out of this world” information. They both love to travel
and can often be found hanging out at Mom’s boxing studio.
The Werner family sits down to eat dinner as a family every night
(around sports schedules as best as possible). One night a week,
they get takeout from a local restaurant. Everyone likes different
things, so they support a lot of different local restaurants! Some
of their favorite restaurants are Poke Row, La Rosa, and Deeply
Rooted. During the summer, you will often find them at their
favorite lake, Elk Lake, as they usually will go once a week to
swim, paddle, and eat the ice cream.
One of the Werner family traditions is their highly anticipated
annual trip to Paradise Village Nueva Vallarta, Mexico. “Our
annual trip to Mexico is definitely the best! We have gone almost
every year since Haley was born. We went in 2009 (she was 6
months). The kids spend their days boogie-boarding, jumping in
the waves, swimming in the pool, eating quesadillas, chips, and
guacamole, and just having fun!” Their trip is booked for 2021
and they can hardly wait.
When asked if the Werner family had a special message they
would like to share with their neighbors they simply said, “Our
door is always open – we love the outdoors and we love Bend
and love sharing it with our neighbors!” If you happen to see the
Werner family around town or out on the trails, make sure to say
hello and get to know them as they are what makes Tetherow and
Bend so wonderful.

A Little Cutie with a Lot of Personality!
It’s never a dull moment with Jackson! This sweet poodle/Bichon
mix, with maybe a touch of West Highland terrier, puts a smile on
everyone’s face with his charm and big personality.
Jackson was found as a stray on the streets of Oakland, CA, and
brought to the Pets Unlimited Shelter in San Francisco where
he met Samantha and his fur-ever home in 2012. His full name,
Jackson J. Jackson, was named after Samantha’s dad’s nickname
in college, where the J. stood for Jackson, as well. A very unique
family name, but you can call him Jackson for short! He has been
cruising around Tetherow and exploring his surroundings since
June 2019. You would never know he is about 10 years old with
his full-of-life personality. “He is very smart, knowing a lot of
tricks. He also knows when he’s being tricked, so he only does so
many. He also does a funny howl noise when he’s happy.”
His favorite place to hang out in Bend is at home, laying on the
deck in the sun with his human family...mom: Samantha and
grandparents: Judy and Bill. He also enjoys camping and has
enjoyed many sights in Central Oregon. “He travels everywhere
with me. I even have a stroller he goes in sometimes so he can
come in places or feel safe in crowded areas. Jackson is the best
companion!” To see some of his traveling adventures, you can
follow Jackson on his Instagram page @jacksondog_.
It’s no surprise when asking Samantha how spoiled Jackson is
on a scale of 1-10 that she answered 10. He gives great cuddles
and gets plenty of his favorite treats, his natural “toothbrush”
chew sticks. When Jackson is not sunbathing or traveling, “he
does rips (zoomies) a lot and races around the house. Jumping
on things, parkour-style, but never running into anything or
missing a turn.”
The next time you see Jackson walking around Tetherow, make
sure to stop and say hi. He will greet you lovingly and warm your
heart instantly.

NATHAN’S CUSTOM
WOOD AND STEEL LLC
Turning
Your
Vision
Into
Art
By Nathan Wismer of Nathan’s Custom Wood and Steel
Nathan grew up in Lincoln, NE, and graduated with
a bachelor’s degree in the arts at the University
of Nebraska. After graduating, Nathan went on to
do a year of volunteer work through AmeriCorps
with Habitat for Humanity. “Carpentry came easy
for me and so I kept with it after my year ended
with AmeriCorps. I went to work for a company
specializing in remodels and home additions. I
soon became complacent and attempted to teach
myself woodworking and furniture design. It was a
slow start, but with more and more practice, it also
became easy. It quickly became clear that I simply
loved to create.”
Nathan and his wife moved from Grand Junction,
CO, to Central Oregon in 2013. “Shortly after
arriving in the area, we bought a ranch and had
twin boys! Wyatt and Bodhi are 6 years old now.
We have 16 cows (two of which are yaks), nine
goats, three dogs, a cat, and 11 chickens.” Nathan’s
wife works in the medical field in Redmond. Once
Nathan was settled into Central Oregon, he began
right away to learn the trade of welding. He saw
another avenue to create even more. “Again,
welding came easy for me with practice, and the
options for combining wood and steel provided
almost endless opportunities to design and create.”
His business specializes in building and designing
just about anything out of wood and/or steel. From
custom furniture, fine dining tables, steel fire pits,
live-edge tables, barn doors, welded components/
bases, chairs/stools, and so much more! Nathan
truly turns your vision into art.
Nathan’s Custom Wood and Steel
loves being his own boss and getting
paid for doing what he loves. He is an
accredited business with the Better
Business Bureau and has an A+ rating.
“I believe what sets my business
apart from the rest is my friendly and
honest approach when it comes to
dealing with my customers. Also, not
to mention our communication and
attention to detail!”
Some of his fine work and attention
to detail can be seen at many local
businesses, including Avid Cider, The
Bite, Tumalo Coffee House, Habitat
for Humanity, Crux Fermentation
Project, Unofficial Logging Co, Ruff
Wear, Embark, Metolius Tea, and
Bend Brewing Company.
When Nathan is not creating and designing; he and
his family love to camp, farm, ranch, fish, hike, and
enjoy their friends. His advice to homeowners: “Don’t
be afraid to ask a professional. I often just field
questions from homeowners about a project they’re
working on. I find it satisfying to be able to help
someone regardless if they’re a customer or not.”
Your vision is one step closer to reality!

SMOKED
HADDOCK
SOUP
By Sarah Fraser | Tetherow Resident
“Whenever we go home to Scotland, it is always on the list of
things to eat, served with a big chunk of crusty bread.”
Cullen skink’s name originates from the fishing town of Cullen in
the North East of Scotland and is very similar to the New England
chowder. “This soup can be eaten immediately but the next day is
better. Cullen skink is a favorite soup, but can not be made in large
quantities as it doesn’t keep for more than a couple of days.”
Ingredients:
• 2 pounds of smoked haddock, cut into chunks (not dyed)
• 2 pints of full-fat milk
• 1 bay leaf
• 2 tbsp butter
• 1 medium onion
• 1 lb potatoes, no skin, cut into bite-size chunks
• Salt and pepper to taste
• Chopped parsley
1. Place the fish and bay leaf in a pan and cover with milk (fish
should just be covered), and gently poach the fish, don’t let it
come to a boil. About 10 minutes.
2. Remove fish from the pan, save the milk.
3. Melt butter and saute the chopped-up onion.
4. Add the potatoes and the milk. Bring to the boil and then sim-
mer until potatoes are soft about 10 minutes, be careful to not
burn the milk.
5. Add the rest of the milk, fish, and parsley heat
until warm through.
6. Season to taste.
Grab a big piece of bread and enjoy!

LANDSCAPE
DESIGN
TRENDS
By Ryan and Rachael Blakely | Owners of Desert Sun Landscape
The landscaping trends you choose
for your home are vital to con-
sider. Whether you have an exist-
ing landscape or are just starting
the design process, the trends
you implement can spotlight your
home and keep you happy with it
for years to come.
Here are some important
areas to consider:
• Outdoor spaces for enter
taining and relaxing
The pandemic has forced us to
realize many things. One, in par-
ticular, is the need to find balance
in our lives. We spend time in our
outdoor spaces to ground our-
selves. Memories are made with
our families and friends here.
• Lighting
Landscape lighting enhances textures, spotlights focal points,
and keeps pathways and patios safe. LED systems have
improved dramatically over the last few years. Don’t underesti-
mate the impact lighting will make on your landscape!
• Smart Controllers
These act as a thermostat for your irrigation system to automati-
cally tailor watering schedules and run times. Studies have shown
most smart controllers can save up to 20% of the water applied

compared to a traditional controller.
With the growing demand on our
water supply, this choice will cer-
tainly make an impact!
As our spring landscape season goes
into full swing, we hope your home
becomes a sanctuary to spend quality
time with your families!

How the Field
Is Changing for the Better
Like a fine wine, some things get better with age. And while the
brightest minds of our generation can argue the drawbacks of
technological advancements, there is no argument that technol-
ogy in healthcare improves lives for the better.
As a population, we have become increasingly aware of the need
for balance -- both physically and mentally. The stigma associ-
ated with mental health has been consistently decreasing and
replaced with ever-increasing respect for people who put their
health and mental wellbeing on the front burner. Employees are
rising up to speak out against poor work environments, and com-
munities fight for those without a voice.
In healthcare, the status quo is never enough. People now search
for providers who do more than put a band-aid on their ailment.
They want permanent solutions to everyday problems. And in the
field of dentistry -- where dental phobia affects up to 24% of the
world, band-aids just don’t cut it anymore. People want to feel
better, yes. But they also want to feel more confident and healthy.
Think about it. You go to the dentist, and you find out you have
gum recession. Depending on the cause and severity, your dentist
will provide recommendations to help stop it from worsening.
But why did the gum recession happen in the first place? Treating
the symptom is a temporary solution. If you want to solve a
problem, you must understand why it happened. That’s where
technology enters the equation.
At Mill Point Dental, the focus is on using technology to answer
questions objectively; to provide clear and concrete data that
helps inform treatment recommendations. Patients have realized
they have a voice and a choice when it comes to healthcare. And
thankfully, they are using it. And that’s something the folks at
Mill Point Dental wholeheartedly support.
Dental school only gets a dentist so far. That’s why continuing
education is critical for dentists to grow in their work. Dentists
Mike Longlet, DDS, and Eric Alston, DMD, are one of only a
handful of dentists in Central Oregon who have completed a den-
tal residency. A dental residency provides experiential learning.
Managing the oral health of patients who are medically com-
promised requires knowledge of limitations. Resident-trained
dentists refer more patients out to specialists because they have
greater exposure to complications and risks. They understand
the limits of their ability to manage complications -- despite
their advanced training. They are believers that you get the best
outcome by being a master at what you are good at and refer to a
different master when needed.
They are also members of Kois, a renowned evidence-based
teaching center. Kois-trained dentists focus on performing treat-
ments the right way the first time, so they don’t have to readdress
them in the future. And that is fantastic news for anyone who
doesn’t want to spend a ton of time at the dentist’s office.
Dentistry is about not only creating a beautiful smile but also one
that lasts. The focus of any good dentist should be on restoring
function with treatments that last. It is about helping patients
smile for life. Because if you feel good about your health, you
have much to smile about.

WE LOVE WHAT WE DO
and we love your pets too!
“I love that Patrick shows up with a cleaning crew
of 3 or 4 people. They can get thru my house in an hour.
They are always on time and can squeeze me in last
minute if necessary. They practice Covid mask wearing.
They bring their own supplies and use natural
cleaning products. They are always happy and asking
for feedback so they can improve their services.
I highly recommend them!!”
