Abstract
1. Abstract
Most Americans are unaware of the discrimination that Asian Americans endure.
While every racial group in America is associated with a certain stereotype, the “model
minority” stereotype placed on Asian Americans is overly generic and harmful. As an
Asian American citizen, I have become more aware of this issue and I want others to be
aware as well. The research question this paper is examining is: How many New York
Times articles reinforce the "model minority" stereotype versus the number of articles
that challenge it? And, for the number of articles that do mention the model minority,
what was the political climate when they were written? This study reviewed articles
written by the New York Times under four different presidents. The results of this
research suggest that more people are aware of the problem with the “model minority”
stereotype and that the political climate of the country does not influence the way the
model minority is presented.
