Evaluation - social groups
1. EVALUATION:
Media Studies AS
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Liam Difford
2. How does our film represent different social groups?
Gender: Our film challenges the stereotype of a woman. The traditional expectations
of a woman in a film is that she would be because Stella who plays agent
Monroe is a very tough woman who can look after herself. We based the
character of Monroe on other female actresses who play tough secret agent
types. An example of this would be Angelina Jolie who is famously known
for her roles in ‘Tomb Raider’ where she plays ‘Lara Croft’, an archaeologist
who spends her time searching for lost artefacts or treasures and manages
to beat up several other people who are looking for the same thing and
trying to get in her way, while still managing to look calm and cool as she
does it. Her character in these films challenges the traditional stereotype of
a female because it is not expected for a female to be able to beat up mean
and come across as really tough. Angelina Jolie plays this sort of character in
other films as well, such as, ‘Salt’ and ‘Wanted’. A reason why these films
are so successful could be because of the strong female character in them
so that women around the world can relate to her. This is the reason that
we decided to have Stella play a tough woman in our film, it is good to
challenge the stereotype because people could get bored of watching the
same damsel in distress situations and might prefer a film where the female
can look after herself.
3. The picture on the left is the representation of a traditional woman, who is doing
housework, cooking, cleaning etc. And the picture on the right is Angelina in ‘Tomb
Raider’ who challenges the traditional stereotype of a woman because she is a tough
character and she doesn’t just stay at home and let the man do everything.

4. Gender, Male:
Our film supports the traditional stereotype of men
because they are robbers they are supposed to
come across as being quite big and strong,
however, our film also challenges the stereotype of
a man because they get beat up by Monroe in the
film and you would not expect male characters to
get beat up by a woman. The fact that the three
robbers are all male is a traditional stereotype
because it is not normally expected that three
women would rob a house in the middle of the
night.
5. Age:
When making our film we didn’t particularly
focus on trying to challenge or support
different age stereotypes so there is not a lot
to write about this section. However, Monroe
is supposed to be in her mid twenties so this is
expected because the audience would not
think of a woman in her late forties to be a
secret agent who can beat guys up etc.. And
there isn’t really an expected age for robbers
to be so it is difficult to state whether the
robbers being older supports or challenges the
stereotype.
6. Sexuality, Class, Ethnicity.
Our film does not particularly represent a certain stereotype for class,
sexuality or ethnicity because our film is an action film and we were only
able to do the first two minutes, we were unable to fit in scenes that would
stereotype class, ethnicity or sexuality. From an action film it is not normally
expected to have people who are homosexual. We don’t think that these
stereotypes would be relevant in the rest of the film if we were going to
create a whole film instead of just the opening two minutes and that is the
reason that we left them out.
