Handball

  1. 1.  Team Handball originated in Europe in the 1900’s, and recognizes over 140 countries as members for the International Handball Federation.  It started as a field game and had 11 players on a team. Later, the game was modified to become an indoor sport.
  2. 2.  This is a team sport where two teams of seven players each (six players and a goalkeeper) pass and bounce a ball trying to throw it in the goal of the opposing team.  The object of handball is to score more points than your opponent.
  3. 3.  A handball game can be played with a court, two goals and a ball. Official teams where uniforms.  The Ball  The ball is 58 to 60 centimetres for men and 54 to 56 for women. It weighs 425 to 475 grams for men, 325 to 400 for women.  The Court  The court for handball is 40 metres long and 20 metres wide.
  4. 4.  A match consists of two periods of 30 minutes each.  Each team consists of 7 players; a goalkeeper and 6 outfield players.  Outfield players can touch the ball with any part of their body that is above the knee.  Once a player receives possession, they can pass, hold possession or shoot.  Only the goalkeeper is allowed to come into contact with the floor of the goal area.  Goalkeepers are allowed out of the goal area but must not retain possession if they are outside the goal area.
  5. 5. Are allowed to: • 1. Defend the goal using hands, feet and body. • 2. Move outside the goal area and throw for a goal, but must abide by the same rules as court players. • 3. Take more than 3 steps when carrying the ball • 4. Hold the ball longer than 3 seconds. Aren’t allowed to: 1. Leave the goal area while in possession of the ball 2. Pick up a ball outside the goal area.
  6. 6.  Goalkeeper  the player who defends the goal with just about every part of the body! The goalkeeper is the only player who can touch the ball with their feet.  Centre a creative handball player who directs play in both defense and attack.  Left and right backs usually the largest players on the handball team. When defending, they try to block shots.  Circle runner The circle runner is quick and gets into a good scoring position themselves.  Left and right wingers the fast players. They shoot from the more difficult angles.
