1. Lying
All NKJV unless otherwise specified
Genesis 2 v15-17
15
Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it. 16
And the LORD God commanded
the man, saying, “Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; 17
“but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you
shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
We have here the commandment given by the creator to the man, Adam.
The Lord also gave the consequence of disobedience.
Genesis 3v1
1
Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made. And he said to the woman,
“Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
A seed of doubt was sown. A call to question the creator’s commandment.
Genesis 2v2-5
2
And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; 3
“but of the fruit of the tree which is in
the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ” 4
Then the serpent said to the
woman, “You will not surely die. 5
“For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like
God, knowing good and evil.”
The woman correctly related the Lord’s commandment – she had knowledge of it.
The serpent then directly challenges God’s Word – the serpent lies to the woman.
We all know that the woman then believes the lie, and goes on to eat of the fruit.
We can see from the above analysis that believing a lie can completely shift the course of a person’s life.
Genesis 3v13
13
And the LORD God said to the woman, “What is this you have done?” The woman said, “The serpent deceived me, and I
ate.”
We can see that the sin nature now forms within Eve, as she tries to divert attention (and resulting judgment) away
from herself – the blame game starts.
What is a lie?
A lie is a spoken word which has as its aim the intention to deceive the hearer. Matthew 24v4
4
And Jesus answered and said to them: “Take heed that no one deceives you. Matthew 24v11 11
“Then many false
prophets will rise up and deceive many. Matthew 24v24 24
“For false christs and false prophets will rise and show great
signs and wonders to deceive, if possible, even the elect. Ephesians 4v14 14
that we should no longer be children, tossed to
and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful
plotting, 2 Timothy 3v13 13
But evil men and impostors will grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived. Titus
1v10 10
For there are many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision, 11
whose
mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole households, teaching things which they ought not, for the sake of dishonest
gain.
There is no such thing as an ‘innocent’ or ‘white’ lie. Even if justified in the mind of the ‘liar’. This compromise
opens spiritual doors for infestation and demonic influence where the lies get bigger and bigger until you mind is
completely warped (read Romans 1v18-32).
The devil (Satan) is the father of lies John 8v44 44
“You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you
want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him.
When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.
Deceit is so crafty, that even one third of the angels in heaven believed the lie, and were cast down. Revelation 12v9
9
So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he
was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. We must remember that these angels saw God face to
face yet even they were deceived and received judgment.
Be careful if you think you stand lest you fall. 1 Corinthians 10v12 12
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take
heed lest he fall. We are completely dependent on Jesus Christ for the truth and to keep us from being deceived. John
8v32 32
“And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”
2. A lie is the exact opposite of the truth. And we know that Jesus is the Truth. John 14v6 6
Jesus said to him, “I am the
way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me. So in effect, a lie is the ‘anti-truth”. 2
John 7 7
For many deceivers have gone out into the world who do not confess Jesus Christ as coming in the flesh. This
is a deceiver and an antichrist. 1 John 2v21-23 21
I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but
because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth. 22
Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is
antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. 23
Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who
acknowledges the Son has the Father also.
God cannot lie Titus 1v2 2
in hope of eternal life which God, who cannot lie, promised before time began,
Lying is critically dangerous – it sends the deceiver as well as the deceived to hell.
2 Thessalonians 2v9-12 9
The coming of the lawless one is according to the working of Satan, with all power, signs,
and lying wonders, 10
and with all unrighteous deception among those who perish, because they did not receive the
love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11
And for this reason God will send them strong delusion, that they should
believe the lie, 12
that they all may be condemned who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness.
We know that there are a myriad of religions in the world. There however is only One Truth. A simple comparison of
religions will reveal to the researcher the contradictions between these religions.
Unless these people firstly hear about Jesus Christ, and secondly believe in Him, they remain under the spell of the
wicked one. Romans 10v13-17 13
For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.” 14
How then shall they
call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And
how shall they hear without a preacher? 15
And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How
beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, Who bring glad tidings of good things!” 16
But they
have not all obeyed the gospel. For Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” 17
So then faith comes by
hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
We are to destroy the works of the devil by preaching the Gospel of Truth. Mark 16v15-16 15
And He said to them,
“Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. 16
“He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but
he who does not believe will be condemned. It is also defensive armour for our own souls Ephesians 6v15 15
and
having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
Revelation 21v8 8
“But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and
all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.”
Hebrews 3v16-19 16
For who, having heard, rebelled? Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses?
17
Now with whom was He angry forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose corpses fell in the wilderness?
18
And to whom did He swear that they would not enter His rest, but to those who did not obey? 19
So we see that they
could not enter in because of unbelief.
Do not let the seeds of doubt cause you to step into unbelief. Get the Word of God into you. Trust in the Word and
believe. Cast down every thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of God. 2 Corinthians 10 v5 5
casting down
arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity
to the obedience of Christ,
1 Timothy 4v16 (NIV) Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both
yourself and your hearers
Do not lie to ease yourself out of a tricky situation. Rather tell the truth and bear whatever consequences this may
have in the natural. For you have already won the victory in the Spirit.
John 1v1-13
1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2
He was in the
beginning with God. 3
All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made.
4
In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5
And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did
not comprehend it.
6
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7
This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all
through him might believe. 8
He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9
That was the true Light which
gives light to every man coming into the world. 10
He was in the world, and the world was made through Him, and the world
did not know Him. 11
He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him. 12
But as many as received Him, to them He gave
the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: 13
who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the
flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.
