2. What makes a certified 15 film?
• No one younger than 15 may see a 15 film in a cinema. No one
younger than 15 may rent or buy a 15 rated video work.
• Drug taking may be shown but the work as a whole must not
promote or encourage drug misuse.
• There are no constraints on nudity in a non-sexual or educational
context. There may be nudity in a sexual context but usually
without strong detail.
• Sexual activity may be portrayed, but usually without strong detail.
There may be strong verbal references to sexual behavior, but the
strongest references are unlikely to be acceptable unless justified
by context. Works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or
stimulation are unlikely to be acceptable.
• Violence may be strong but should not dwell on the infliction of pain
or injury. The strongest gory images are unlikely to be acceptable.
Strong sadistic violence is also unlikely to be acceptable. There
may be detailed verbal references to sexual violence but the
depiction of sexual violence must be discreet and justified by
context.
3. What makes a certified 18 film?
• No one younger than 18 may see an 18 film in a cinema. No
one younger than 18 may rent or buy an 18 rated video work.
Adults should be free to choose their own entertainment.
• Legislation says adults have free choice in the films they
watch, however exceptions can be made when; risk to
individuals or society, for example sexual/violence or sexual
assault promotion.
• Explicit images of sexual content that cannot be justified.
4. For our film we were deciding between the certificate 15 or 18. This is
because the majority of horror films are given this age certificate. If we
explored younger aged certificates we wouldn’t be able to include certain
things in our film opening such as gore and more scarier things.
As a group we discussed which certificate out of the two would be more
suitable for our film opening. As we aren't including anything to graphic and
wanted our film to appeal to a wider audience we chose the 15 certificate.
Also because most of the films distributed by our chosen production
company are certified 15. I feel that our film would be unable to fall into the
18 rated category as we have a low budget and will be able to show
gruesome scenes /violence.
