Basic Questions
02/13/1713
• Who writes scientific papers?
• Engineers, scientists, educators and
researchers from:
 Corporations
 Academia
 Government
• Students typically write and present
conference papers before
submitting journal articles
Audience
Scientific research publishing
02/13/1714
• Content that is appropriate, in scope and level
• Clearly written original material that addresses a new
and important problem
• Extension of previously published work
• Valid methods and rationale
• Illustrations, tables and graphs that support the text
• References that are current and relevant to the subject
Audience
What IEEE editors and
reviewers are looking for
02/13/1715
How does the review process work?
• Editor-in-Chief gets the paper after it goes through content match check
(iAuthenticate) and “banned author” check
• If the paper is in scope for the journal, it is assigned to an editor
(associate editor)
• Editor assigns the paper to five or more reviewers
• Reviewers send their comments back to the editor
• Editor makes a recommendation to the EIC as follows
o Accept
o Revise & Resubmit
o Reject
• The EIC makes the final decision and informs the corresponding author

Audience
Why IEEE editors and reviewers
reject papers
• The content is not a good fit for the publication
• There are serious scientific flaws:
• Inconclusive results or incorrect interpretation
• Fraudulent research
• It is poorly written
• It does not address a big enough problem
or advance the scientific field
• The work was previously published
• The quality is not good enough for the journal
• Reviewers have misunderstood the article

Abstract Dos and Don’ts
The objective of this paper was to propose a human expert-based approach to electrical peak
demand management. The proposed approach helped to allocate demand curtailments (MW) among
distribution substations (DS) or feeders in an electric utility service area based on requirements of
the central load dispatch center. Demand curtailment allocation was quantified taking into account
demand response (DR) potential and load curtailment priority of each DS, which can be determined
using DS loading level, capacity of each DS, customer types (residential/commercial) and load
categories (deployable, interruptible or critical). Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to model
a complex decision-making process according to both expert inputs and objective parameters.
Simulation case studies were conducted to demonstrate how the proposed approach can be
implemented to perform DR using real-world data from an electric utility. Simulation results
demonstrated that the proposed approach is capable of achieving realistic demand curtailment
allocations among different DSs to meet the peak load reduction requirements at the utility level.

This paper presents and assesses a framework for an engineering capstone design program. We
explain how student preparation, project selection, and instructor mentorship are the three key
elements that must be addressed before the capstone experience is ready for the students. Next,
we describe a way to administer and execute the capstone design experience including design
workshops and lead engineers. We describe the importance in assessing the capstone design
experience and report recent assessment results of our framework. We comment specifically on
what students thought were the most important aspects of their experience in engineering capstone
design and provide quantitative insight into what parts of the framework are most important.

Factor
02/13/1738
Are we depending too heavily on Impact Factors?
•Journal’s reputation in the community is important
•For new and lesser known journals, look at the reputation of the editorial board
•Look at the number of downloads, as IEEE uses this for revenue distribution
•Are patent citations present? IEEE includes these in Xplore®

  • 8. 02/13/178 • A journal article is a fully developed presentation of your work and its final findings • Original research results presented • Clear conclusions are made and supported by the data • A conference article can be written while research is ongoing • Can present preliminary results or highlight recent work • Gain informal feedback to use in your research • Conference articles are typically shorter than journal articles, with less detail and fewer references Publish IEEE journal or IEEE conference?
  • 9. 02/13/179 • IEEE journals are cited 3 times more often in patent applications than other leading publisher’s journals IEEE Journals IEEE Conferences • IEEE Conference proceedings are recognized worldwide as the most vital collection of consolidated published articles in EE, computer science, related fields Publish IEEE journal or IEEE conference? PRO CON • A high percentage of articles submitted to any professional publication are rejected • Per IEEE Policy, if you do not present your article at a conference, it may be suppressed in IEEE Xplore and not indexed in other databases
  • 10. 02/13/1710 • Review the conference calendar • Find a good match for your research subject matter • Ensure you are available to present IEEE has 184 unique publications covering a wide range of technical areas • Review the journal listings • Who reads it • What they publish • What kinds of articles they want IEEE publishes 1,500+ leading-edge conference proceedings every year Publish Finding the right IEEE publication or IEEE conference
  • 12. 02/13/1712 1.Are you writing this paper for the sake of writing a paper? 2.Or do you want to show how others can benefit from your work? Audience Basic Questions
  • 13. 02/13/1713 • Who writes scientific papers? • Engineers, scientists, educators and researchers from:  Corporations  Academia  Government • Students typically write and present conference papers before submitting journal articles Audience Scientific research publishing
  • 14. 02/13/1714 • Content that is appropriate, in scope and level • Clearly written original material that addresses a new and important problem • Extension of previously published work • Valid methods and rationale • Illustrations, tables and graphs that support the text • References that are current and relevant to the subject Audience What IEEE editors and reviewers are looking for
  • 15. 02/13/1715 How does the review process work? • Editor-in-Chief gets the paper after it goes through content match check (iAuthenticate) and “banned author” check • If the paper is in scope for the journal, it is assigned to an editor (associate editor) • Editor assigns the paper to five or more reviewers • Reviewers send their comments back to the editor • Editor makes a recommendation to the EIC as follows o Accept o Revise & Resubmit o Reject • The EIC makes the final decision and informs the corresponding author
  • 16. Example of one journal’s review process IEEE Transactions on Information Technology in Biomedicine
  • 17. 02/13/1717 Audience Why IEEE editors and reviewers reject papers • The content is not a good fit for the publication • There are serious scientific flaws: • Inconclusive results or incorrect interpretation • Fraudulent research • It is poorly written • It does not address a big enough problem or advance the scientific field • The work was previously published • The quality is not good enough for the journal • Reviewers have misunderstood the article
  • 20. 02/13/1720 Good Title Bad Title VS. • 22. 02/13/1722 What you did Why you did it How the results were useful, important & move the field forward Why they’re useful & important & move the field forward Paper Structure Abstract A “stand alone” condensed version of the article •No more than 250 words; written in the past tense •Uses keywords and index terms
  • 23. Paper Structure Abstract Dos and Don’ts The objective of this paper was to propose a human expert-based approach to electrical peak demand management. The proposed approach helped to allocate demand curtailments (MW) among distribution substations (DS) or feeders in an electric utility service area based on requirements of the central load dispatch center. Demand curtailment allocation was quantified taking into account demand response (DR) potential and load curtailment priority of each DS, which can be determined using DS loading level, capacity of each DS, customer types (residential/commercial) and load categories (deployable, interruptible or critical). Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) was used to model a complex decision-making process according to both expert inputs and objective parameters. Simulation case studies were conducted to demonstrate how the proposed approach can be implemented to perform DR using real-world data from an electric utility. Simulation results demonstrated that the proposed approach is capable of achieving realistic demand curtailment allocations among different DSs to meet the peak load reduction requirements at the utility level. Vs This paper presents and assesses a framework for an engineering capstone design program. We explain how student preparation, project selection, and instructor mentorship are the three key elements that must be addressed before the capstone experience is ready for the students. Next, we describe a way to administer and execute the capstone design experience including design workshops and lead engineers. We describe the importance in assessing the capstone design experience and report recent assessment results of our framework. We comment specifically on what students thought were the most important aspects of their experience in engineering capstone design and provide quantitative insight into what parts of the framework are most important. 23

Notes de l'éditeur

  1. These are the four main steps when writing a technical paper. Choose the appropriate IEEE periodical for your research. Prepare your manuscript using IEEE standards. Submit your article via E-Submission process. And, the review process once your article has been submitted.
  2. The review process is straight forward starting with the receipt of the paper and ending with the review decision. For fully OA topical journals and hybrid journals, the review process allows for some engagement between reviewer comments and author to improve the paper. Once again, a more novice author may benefit from a more interactive review process. The IEEE peer review process is designed to ensure the high quality of every article submitted to and published by IEEE. Exact steps in the review process vary slightly by publication. The author can track progress of the review through ScholarOne Manuscripts for most publications.
  3. Presenters should include here a graphic of a well written abstract within the box provided.
  4. Presenters should include here a graphic of a well written abstract within the box provided.
  5. Presenters should ensure that writers understand that key words and subject headings are what discovery services use followed by the title – appropriate, logical, applicable, specific and searchable terms are critical.
  6. Presenters should insert an example of a result/discussion/findings within box provided.
  7. Presenters should insert an example of properly cited material in the box provided.
  8. Avoiding misconduct is important to the IEEE quality and brand and should be addressed with audience.
  9. Ethical publishing should also be addressed with audience ~ focus should be on IEEE quality standards and the brand.

  16. Animated slide. The Publication Recommender helps authors discover which IEEE periodical and/or conference best fits the scope and content of their research. Authors can enter keywords or an entire abstract into the tool, decide whether they want to publish in a periodical, a conference proceeding, or both, and then they receive a list of recommendations. Clicking on a recommended publishing outlet opens a popup window with more information on the publication and a link directly to the submission site. http://publication-recommender.ieee.org/home
  17. To find a periodical on IEEE Xplore, you can browse by title or you can narrow the periodicals by topic.

  21. Another offering in Collabratec is the AuthorLab, which is a community specifically for journal authors. It is free to join and is a great place to ask questions about authoring and the production process. It is moderated by several IEEE staff and contains thousands of researchers interested in publishing. We try to seed it with questions or useful information a few times a week. 4500 users in the AuthorLab, which is up 19% from when I started moderating the group six weeks ago.
  22. Animated slide. Overleaf is a third-party cloud-based scientific authoring platform based on LaTeX. LaTeX is a document preparation and markup language that handles equations and math better than word processing programs like Microsoft Word so LaTeX is popular in the subject areas covered by IEEE, although Overleaf as a specific LaTeX editor is less well-known. Authors in Collabratec can create LaTeX files or work with their co-authors on these files in real time via Overleaf, just like they can work on a Word doc together via Microsoft. Collabratec users get a free Overleaf Pro account, which offers additional storage and unlimited users. LaTeX templates for IEEE periodicals are easily available in Overleaf.
  23. The submission process is easy through IEEE Xplore. To submit an article to an IEEE periodical or transaction, go to that publication’s homepage in IEEE Xplore. Click on “Submit a Manuscript” and follow the prompts to set up an account.
  24. Now you are in the author center. To submit an article, follow the on-screen directions through the process. The progress bar on the side of the page shows when each step of the submission process is complete. The IEEE ScholarOne author center will guide you through seven steps to submission. The first two are: Type, Title & Abstract, Attributes/Keyword selection
  25. Unlike periodicals that are managed by IEEE, the process for submitting papers to IEEE sponsored conferences varies from conference to conference.   For complete information, please see the “Call for Papers” for the conference(s) in question. There you will find information about submission and review dates, acceptable formats for submission, and presentation requirements for accepted papers. To search for a specific conference, go the main Conferences & Events page on ieee.org.
  26. Authors are able to learn about authorship and how to prepare, write, and submit quality technical articles. The guide can be downloaded, and it includes embedded links to more information, forms, etc.
