7. Leaders works inside-out
A good leader is someone who
works inside- out, not
outside-in.
Make a change within you, to
change the world.
A leader works as if they are
not required to do so but are
inspired to do so.
8. Leaders are opportunity-minded

that he must be rich to help others."
J. D. Rockefeller
Don’t wait for other people to tell
you what you should do, do it.

Warren Bennis
The leader is the one who climbs the tallest tree,

Habits of Effective Leaders
13. Do you often say these things to
yourself, friends or parents?
“I can do nothing about it”
“He makes me so mad”, “I am not responsible”
“I can’t do that”, “If only I have this and that…
“I have nothing, “I have no talent
“I have no money, “I have no friends who can
support me
“I’m not good enough to do that job.”
“I’m not attractive enough to get that girl to date
me.”
“I’m too shy”, “I always fail at that.”
”My father was right. I’ll never amount to much.”

11 Spies- Reactive (Grasshoppers)

things happen.
They find ways to do it.
Circle of Influence
Reactive- affected by
environment, they blame
others for their misfortune
17. Being a proactive servant-leaders, you can be part of the
solution, not part of the problem.
The servant-leader can conceive solutions to problems that do
not currently exist
(Greenleaf, 1970, pp. 23-25).
Greenleaf defined this as healing
as “to make whole” (1970, p. 27).
Activity: Listen to your language and to other people. How often do you use
and hear reactive phrases such as “if only, I can’t, or I have to?
18. Effective Communication skill
“Nothing in life is more important than the ability to communicate
effectively.”
President Gerald Ford
The effective servant-leader builds group consensus through “gentle
but clear and persistent persuasion, and does not exert group
compliance through position power.
Servant-leadership utilizes personal, rather
than position power, to influence
Followers and achieve organizational
objectives.
19. Influential People
You can influence people if you have the charisma.
“How can you have charisma?
Be more concerned about making others feel good about
themselves than you are making them feel good about you.”
-Dan Reiland, Vice President of Leadership
Development, INJOY
“It is not what to say that matters, but how you say it.”
20. Responsible
With great power as strong as
leadership come great responsibilities.
What will you do if you are given a
chance to be a millionaire for one day?
Your actions should speak to your
ideals, integrity and character.
As a leader you are Stewards of your men.
Organizational stewards, or ‘trustees’ are concerned not only for the
individual followers within the organization, but also the organization as
a whole, and its impact on and relationship with all of society
(Greenleaf, 1970, p. 31).
21. Foresight
Foresight – “Prescience, or foresight, is a better than average
guess about what is going to happen when in the future”
(Greenleaf, 1970, p. 16).
Visionary
“ Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.”
GOALS

world”
“putting yourself into the situations of other
people”
24. Emphatic Listening – is the key to making deposits in Emotional Bank Account
(EBA)
“SEEK FIRST TO UNDERSTAND, THEN TO BE UNDERSTOOD”
“The servant always accepts and empathizes, never rejects” (1970, p. 12), and
“Men grow taller when those who lead them empathize, and when they are
accepted for who they are…” (1970, p. 14).
According to Greenleaf, “Only a true natural servant automatically responds to
any problem by listening first” (1970, p. 10)
-Robert Greenleaf
Activity: Appreciative Inquiry
25. Committed
Commitment to the growth of people – A
demonstrated appreciation and
encouragement of others. Per Greenleaf,
“The secret of institution building is to be
able to weld a team of such people by
lifting them up to grow taller than they would
otherwise be” (1970, p. 14).
True Leaders do not think , “If I train my
people to be better, they might turn out to
be better than I am.
“Leaders enables others to act not by
hoarding the power they have but by giving
it away” Russell (2001),

To influence people for a common goal.
This afternoon I will share to you principles of leadership and habits of effective leaders.
You are the servant. You are to help your teammates attain goal.
These people are humble. They don’t want to be popular and be notified if they have done good. They work on their capacity to move people and community.
Leadership does not require high ranking positions in any government agency, in church or in school.
Successful people are effective people. Effective leaders to be specific. They know what to prioritize, when to say yes or no. They are opportunity minded, not problem minded.
Proactive people focus on the things they can do something about- circle of influence. Reactive people focus on the circle of concern- the weaknesses of other people, problems of environment, circumstances in which they have no control.
Activity: Human Collage
Appreciative Inquiry- Ask questions from your friend and don’t comment on it. Just ask and the do a follow up question after the first.
How did you feel?
