3. Academic Writing
• Academic writing is always a form of
evaluation that asks you to demonstrate
knowledge and show proficiency with certain
disciplinary skills of thinking, interpreting, and
presenting.
• Formal order or structure in which to present
ideas, in addition to ensuring that ideas are
supported by author citations in the literature.
4. Genre
• When studying and researching you have to
read different types of texts: textbooks,
reference works, scholarly and popular articles
and essays, conference papers, official reports
and theses.

• Textbook. A textbook is mean to communicate
established knowledge to students of a given
subject
• Scholarly article. The purpose of a scholarly
article is to present new knowledge or to
provide new perspectives on an academic or
scientific problem or object.
• Thesis. A thesis is a major piece of scholarly
work.
6. Audience
• Being conscious of academic tone suggests that
you are aware of your audience and respect the
formality normally associated with academic
writing.
• You should assume that your readers will be
intelligent thinking people, but they may not be
specifically informed of your topic.
• Do not presume that your reader knows all the
terms and concepts associated with your work.
8. APA Style
• APA (American Psychological Association) style
is most commonly used to cite sources within
the social sciences.
• Use this style in our writing for citation and
referencing other works
• In this class we use APA 6th edition
9. Structure
• Structure is required, such as the introduction,
the thesis, the body paragraphs, and the
conclusion. This simple structure is typical of
an essay format.
10. Punctuation
• In academic writing you should always follow
rules of punctuation and grammar
• Punctuation and the conventions of grammar
are universally known systems (within English
speaking cultures) that maintain clarity and
avoid ambiguity in expression.
11. References
• A significant difference between academic
writing and other writing genres is based on
the citation and referencing of published
authors.
• Citing the work of other authors is central to
academic writing because it shows you have
read the literature, understood the ideas, and
have integrated these issues and varying
perspectives into the assignment task.
