The document uses a story involving Dracula playing with toy cars, pouring acid on them, shooting snakes with a gun, and taking his temperature to help remember the functions of blood through the Method of Loci memory technique. The functions of blood that the story represents are: transportation of materials through the body; regulation of pH levels; regulation of fluid loss through clotting; defense against toxins and pathogens; and stabilization of body temperatures.
3. The Story Goes……
You are in the living room when you see
Dracula sitting on the floor playing with some
toy cars.
4. Dracula then puts the toy cars into a bucket
and starts pouring acid all over them.
5. Suddenly, you notice a group of snakes
creeping towards Dracula, who spots them
out of the corner of his eye and begins
shooting at them with a gun.
6. After successfully fighting of all the snakes,
Dracula pulls a thermometer out of his pocket
and sticks it into his mouth
7. So what does all this have to do with
blood?
Well… each step of the story is a memory hook
you can use to remember the functions of
blood…
8. Dracula
By visualizing Dracula sitting in the living room
you will be able to remember that this story is
associated with blood!
9. Toy Cars
Cars are associated with transport right? So by
remembering toy cars you will be able to
remember that:
Blood is involved in TRANSPORTATION of
dissolved gasses, nutrients, hormones and
metabolic wastes.
10. The Acid
Acid is acidic right? and anything acidic is
rated on a pH scale. So, by remembering
Dracula pouring acid over the toy cars you will
remember that:
Blood is involved in the of REGULATION OF pH
in interstitial fluids.
11. The Bucket
But remember, Dracula didn’t just pour the
acid on the cars all over the floor. He made
sure to first place the cars into a bucket to
catch all the spills. This means that:
Blood is involved in the REGULATION OF FLUID
LOSS at injury sites (by clotting).
12. The Snakes
The snakes represented toxins an pathogens as
they are venomous and dangerous. This will
make sense in the next slide…
13. The Gun
By remembering Dracula shooting the snakes
with a gun, you can remember that:
Blood is involved in DEFENSE AGAINST
TOXINS AND PATHOGENS.
14. The Thermometer
Thermometers measure temperature right?
By remembering the thermometer Dracula
sticks in his mouth, you will remember that:
Blood is involved in STABILIZATION OF BODY
TEMPERATURES.
15. Thank You
I hope the Method of Loci (and my creative
story) was useful in helping you remember the
functions of blood!
Good Luck with your studies
Sincerely,
An Aussie Paramedic Student.
