2. WORK EXPERIENCE

Responsibilities:
1. Taking charge of shift, preventative maintenance and refurbishment teams (48 people)
as a subcontractor at a copper and cobalt mine in the Democratic Republic of the
Congo.
2. Putting into place preventative maintenance systems for all the overhead lifting
machines on site (72 cranes on contract, 90 pieces of equipment in total).
3. Ensuring critical spare parts were ordered and in stock at all times. Doing root cause
analysis investigations on all equipment failures and reporting these to the client.
4. Drawing up and maintaining a service interval schedule for all overhead lifting
machines and ensuring that planned maintenance gets performed as planned and as
per OEM specifications. Liaising with the client and suppliers and ensuring a smooth
workflow of orders, invoices and payments.
5. Doing improvements on lifting equipment to enhance performance and availability
where necessary.
6. Liaising with suppliers and obtaining quotes for equipment/parts as and when needed.
These quotes were re-worked to include transportation, taxes, etc. before handing it
over to the client for consideration.
7. Replacing redundant lifting machines with new equipment as per the client’s request.
This included the approval of drawings and ensuring that all measurements, voltages,
capacity, etc. are correct according to the clients’ request. This also involved
upgrading and installation of new power supply systems to suit the new equipment.
8. Load testing and commissioning of all new overhead lifting machines after installation,
before signing it over to the client. This also included the installation and
commissioning of four-post lifts and lubrication systems in light vehicle workshops.
9. Training operators and maintenance personnel on the correct and safe use and
maintenance of new equipment. Various brands were installed new on site i.e. Kone,
Demag, Condra, Kito, Elephant and Fermont and all new equipment were immediately
placed on the planned maintenance schedule to ensure and maintain optimum
performance of the equipment.
10. Doing detailed time keeping for all employees which reflected leave taken and sick
days taken for payroll purposes.
11. Controlling the petty cash and keeping a detailed register of how cash was utilized.
This was an average of USD 20 000 per month. This included drawing cash from the
company’s bank account and paying various accounts as well as buying necessary
equipment, consumables, fuel, etc. needed to perform our work safely and efficiently.
Reason for leaving:
Due to the current economic climate the mine seized all production activities and our
contracts expired on 31 December 2015 which meant our services and positions became
redundant.
