VMware is the fastest growing software company that continues to grow and lead the market based on a compelling value proposition to a broad set of IT customers, from small to large global enterprises. The pioneer in x86 virtualization, VMware continues to redefine the scope of virtualization for the new era of Cloud Computing.
VMware’s mission is perfectly aligned with that of its customers. VMware has set out to simplify the complexity that bogs down IT, which in turn will dramatically lower operational costs, while at the same time enabling agile service delivery to better support the goals of the business. The mission is simply stated, but backed my millions of advanced engineering hours, ushering in a new era of IT.
That new era is characterized by the promise of cloud computing. The “Web” completely changed the way we think about consuming services over the internet. But that was only half of the picture. The other half is how those services are delivered. That’s the focus of cloud computing, which completes the transformation of service delivery. VMware, the customer-proven leader in virtualization, is aggressively helping businesses pave the path to “Cloud Computing”, which promises to be the new era in IT that finally addresses the compounding problem of complexity.
With the rise of public cloud infrastructure providers, IT is faced with a new challenge – that of answering to the “public rate card”. It is only a matter of time before the executive committee, or even the board, is asking IT how they stack up against the economics of resources available through these public clouds. <click>Virtualization has already begun to dramatically remove the underlying complexity of IT infrastructure and operations. As a result, customers that are more aggressively adopting virtualization within their datacenters are achieving previously unattainable economics. <click> With broader virtualization, and the approach of resource pooling, automation of the ongoing operations of IT becomes a reality. It’s through the combination of utilization with virtualization, then applying automation, that the entire cost curve is being re-drawn. In fact, it is this same approach that is being applied by public cloud providers to attain their aggressive rate card. Internal IT can get there.
IT has to take control, and that means it must rapidly move to a more agile, self-service model, not unlike a cloud provider.<click>VMware is building on the dynamic capabilities of virtual resource pools, and delivering a new level of management technology, to enable self-service, instant provisioning of pre-defined, IT controlled services. IT can deliver the same experience, and the same responsiveness, as any public cloud provider. In fact, those services can be deployed both internally, or externally to a public cloud service, transparent to the business.
Simplification through abstraction and pooling, utilization and automation, and self-service delivery model. This is how VMware is working with customers to achieve transformational results in their IT operations.
The impact to IT can be characterized in 3 categories of energy savings – financial, human, and the earth’s. These savings are what enable the transfer of IT energy from maintenance to innovation.
The first category, Financial Energy, is what attracts most people to virtualization in the beginning – cost savings. For example, VMware customers have seen on average a 50 to 60 percent cost reduction in server hardware when leveraging VMware technology for server consolidation. The VMware vSphere™ 4 virtualization platform supports the highest consolidation ratios in the industry, with throughput and performance capabilities that now can match physical environments in most situations. This is why VMware customers are able to achieve such high capex savings.Of even bigger impact for some is the ability to delay costly datacenter expansion, because of the reclaimed floor space, power and cooling as a result of these consolidation efforts. In addition, a virtualized environment is easier to manage, and enables significantly more automation of mundane management tasks. This results in the majority of customers also experiencing at least a 25% reduction in operational costs. The net result is that your dollars stretch further, which means you can get significantly more done with less costs.
The second category is Human Energy, and this is all about shifting the energy away from managing hardware, to spending time on business needs. A study of our highly virtualized customer base, showed that on average these customers were spending one-third less time on routine administrative tasks in IT operations due to virtualization and the automation achieved with it. That’s a third of your day, everyday, in return energy.
And finally, the Earth’s Energy. Virtualization in the datacenter has shown the ability to save up to 80% in energy costs. These results are achieved through a combination of physical consolidation, combined with Distributed Power Management, a capability unique to VMware vSphere, to automatically migrate applications to fewer servers during non-peak hours, shutting down machines and unused infrastructure, saving real energy – and of course dollars.
The result of all of these savings can now be applied to the business. And with advances in self-service enablement, IT can dramatically increase its responsiveness to the business.
It’s no surprise that cloud computing has jumped in terms of CIO priorities. With the availability of a pubic rate card combined with a self-service, instant delivery model for IT infrastructure, every CIO must determine their strategy to leverage cloud computing. There’s also no surprise that virtualization is the top priority. After all, the first step to transitioning to a cloud architecture is the virtualization of the datacenter.
The common mis-perception is that cloud computing implies an “external” cloud, based on public cloud services, e.g. Amazon. The fact is that cloud computing is how you approach IT, it is “a way of doing computing”, not a destination. Ultimately, most enterprises will benefit from adopting cloud computing within their own datacenters, building “private clouds”, and getting there in an evolutionary way through their existing virtualization journey. VMware not only arms enterprises to build the private cloud, but is the vendor that supplies cloud infrastructure to the broadest set of public cloud providers as well. It is VMware’s intent to make “Hyrbrid Clouds” a reality, through a common platform built around vSphere, with common management and security models to give the enterprise the confidence they need, in an environment that provides on-demand application portability.
Unlike many technology innovations, cloud computing brings a set of benefits to end-users of IT as well as to IT itself. Many refer to this model as “It-as-a-Service”, whether it is delivered via remote cloud service providers, or from internal IT. In this model, IT becomes more than a supplier, and becomes a business partner.
The entire VMware portfolio is aimed at removing and reducing complexity in IT, leveraging a cloud computing approach. Here are the basics:vSphere, the industry’s leading virtualization platform, is the foundation for building out a cloud architecture. It is step 1 on the journey. View takes the benefits of pooling, automation, control, etc. into play for desktops, which is actually the largest workload base in the enterprise. Thus being built on and extending vSphere, since desktop virtualization IS a datacenter problem, and should leverage a common cloud architecture.vCenter brings automation, simplification, etc. at the infrastructure level. Also note that vSphere + vCenter + View are used by cloud service providers to build out public cloud infrastructure as well. Same foundation for private and public clouds. “Redwood” is a project that is delivering the next level of abstraction, managing services across cloud infrastructure – both private and public. It will become the common management model across private clouds and VMware virtualized public clouds (i.e. vCloud partners).Springsource presents the frameworks and programming model for the cloud, freeing developers from having to be concerned with how and where to deploy applications, whether internally in a private cloud, in a VMware virtualized public cloud, or in any public cloud. VMware is working to optimize Spring-based application deployment into VMware Virtualized cloud environments, but will continue to support full customer choice of deployment destinations. Finally, VMware delivers virtual appliances for common, core IT services that should just be available and reliable in any cloud environment. IT should not be spending valuable resource time on managing these services, so VMware is making it dramatically simpler through virtual appliance offerings. Again, these will run in the private cloud inside the enterprise, on VMware Virtualized public clouds, or other public cloud offerings.
Often times when discussing cloud computing, the subject equates the technology and benefits to the datacenter. VMware firmly believes that a consistent architecture that supports desktop delivery via the cloud is an important part of the overall strategy. <click>After all, the same benefit applies to the end users – self-service, instant delivery of their desktop, anytime, anywhere, from any device. VMware delivers the end-to-end cloud architecture for the whole of IT service delivery.
The following section provides a high-level introduction to the product and solution areas addressed by VMware.
Chart defines the key scale improvements with the 4.1 release.
vSphere 4.0 set the new bar for virtualization platforms. It introduced significant new functionality and has had over 1 million downloads in 1 year of being available.
vSphere 4.1 enables higher consolidation ratios with unequaled performance by providing groundbreaking new memory management technology and expanding its resource pooling capabilities with new granular controls for storage and the network. The platform also offers dramatic “cloud scale” to support even the largest environments.Compute/Performance-Memory Compression – Increase application performance by up to 30% by reducing memory contention as a bottleneckStorage- Storage I/O Control – Set storage quality of service priorities per virtual machine for guaranteemillisecond access to storage resources-Performance Reporting – Deliver key storage performance statistics regardless of storage protocol.Network- Network I/O Control – Set network quality of service priorities per flow type for guaranteed access to network resources. Scalability-vSphere 4.1 –Fully virtualize the data center and scale at least 2x more than ever before. VMs per Cluster – 3,000 (3x vSphere 4.0)Hosts per vCenter – 1,000 (3x vSphere 4.0) Virtual Machines per Data Center – 5,000 (2x vSphere 4.0) vSphere 4.1 extends its award winning availability and security capabilities with the world’s fastest live migrations and the ability to respond in parallel to any business need or change. Application services enhancements deliver new status details for high availability, tighter integration with an existing directory service, and new granular policies for virtual machine load-balancing. Availability -vMotion– Speed and scale enhancements to vMotion deliver superior platform response and availability by migrating virtual machines up to 5x faster and enabling up to eight vMotion events in parallel. -VMware High Availability (HA) – Deeper diagnostic and health check for VMware High Availability (HA) further enhances the already high levels of availability for virtual machines.Security- Active Directory integration–Seamless user authenticationat the ESX or ESXi host (rather than vCenter Server) for centralized user management. Easily assign privileges to users or groups plus roll out permission rules across hosts.Control-DRS Host Affinity– Set granular policies for virtual machine movement (for example, restricting a virtual machine to a specific host due to licensing impact).vSphere 4.1 builds on the VMware ecosystem not only in terms of increased hardware and software support but also by opening new possibilities for tie-in with cloud computing. Open and InteroperableArchitecture– vSphere 4.1 enables partners to leverage new storage APIs for array integration (for availability requirements). The vSphere platform can also be leveraged through the new vCloud API for an open and interoperable computing model in the cloud. Expanded Support – The vSphere 4.1 latest hardware compatibility list (HCL) expands the platform to support more operating systems, devices, applications, and service providers than any other virtualization platform. This also now includes new support for 3rd party serial port concentrators (for enhanced management) and the latest x86 processors on the market.
