How to start a movement The theory behind super

A little idea that makes big

What does it take to be a female leader
today?
Welcome to the
Leadership Club
Three different global surveys prove
our worth:
Companies with women on their board:
Performed consistently higher on return
on equity
Had lower gearing
Had much better rates of growth, and
Had a higher book value multiple over
the six years of the study
We are amazing!
Women : The Third Billion
The potential in our numbers and worth
NEW ZEALAND
50% of NZ Workforce
Earn 10% less
12% on board level
3/16 Finalists in NZ
Entrepreneur of the Year
Less likely to work and care
for children Vs OECD
average
But the statistics show our ‘movement’ is slowing down
Source: Ministry of Womens Affairs 2014 Annual Report and Grant Thornton's International Business Report
GLOBALLY
22% of senior management
positions are women
Down from 32% in 2011.
Eastern Europe led by Russia
and are the leading economies
Last year, 30% of businesses
around the world had no
women in senior management.
So what stands in our
way?

The culture of judgment
In a 2014 females leadership study The
five barriers that caused the highest
negative impact were:
• Feelings of guilt for not spending
enough time with family because of
work
• Family responsibilities interfering with
work
• Resistance from other current leaders
• Having to outperform male leaders to
be considered effective
• Lack of support in the household
when work is demanding
This is why we have stalled.
Why women are opting out of the
demands and responsibility that
leadership brings.
Source: Caliper Dec 2014
We constantly seek to
harmonise the world
around us
The leader innovates whereas the
manager administers
The leader inspires trust whereas a
manager relies on control
The leader asks what and why
whereas the manager asks how
and when
A leader is not afraid of failing
publicly
Do you find yourself doing or
inspiring?
Is the managing
preventing us from
leading?

leadership

The expectations for
female leaders are

Letting go of the doing, frees us up
to lead.

them to fish.

doesn’t have to do it

HUSBANDS
Leading in Life: My Tips
HEALTHHOME
HOME: Taking care of your
business
• Delegate your home duties. Or
• Don’t look.
• Don’t apologise if you need to take care
of a sick child, or just need to be
somewhere for personal reasons.
• Go home to meet the electrician or go on
that school trip.
• Build it in and make it work.
• Negotiate flexible, work from anywhere
hours
• There are exceptions to the rule but generally speaking its going to be you
doing kids, home, and everything in between. It’s in our nature.
• Yes its changing but we can’t help ourselves.
• We want to. This is the life we choose.
• Take responsibility for the things you want.
• Let the guilt motivate you to make it work and focus on what matters.
• Learn to take the emotion out of feeling like you’re the only one doing
everything and lead.
• Shape the vision together and keep it alive even when life is shit.
• Music and Laughter will get you through anything and a spa also helps.
HUSBANDS – Partners with priorities
• Your health is worth
fighting for.
• Maintaining good health
is a necessity for great
leaders.
• Move, replenish, be the
fittest, healthiest version
of yourself but accept that
there will be moments
that this will take a back
seat.
• Understand that you will
naturally put everything
else ahead of this, but
you can’t do what you
want to do without your
health.
• Be Well, Live Well, Move
Well, Love Well.

most loved lady.

LEANING IN AND OUT
LEADING IN ORGANSIATIONS: MY TIPS
BOSSES & TEAMS
EFFECTIVE
COMMUNICATION
Where are you looking to
anticipate change?
What is your diversity measure
of your networks?
Are you courageous enough to
abandon a practice that made
you successful in the past?
The experts view: What
it takes to be a great
leader in the 21st
century
TRUST and
HONESTY is
everything.
• Always communicate with them
like they are the boss.
MANNERS. Respect. Always
treat what they say to you in
confidence.
• If they have asked you to do
something, OVER-
COMMUNICATE and check in
along the way. Communicate in
the medium they use.
• FRONT-FOOT the issues
directly and one to one, not in
front of others. Talk to them
before the meeting.
• Don’t take it personally if they
decide to put you in your place.
It means they are letting you
know their boundaries. Male
bosses are more likely to do this
publicly. Suck it up and move on.
Bosses
Teams
The Power of Connections
• The diversity and strength of your network is key to your success as a leader. Ideas,
opportunities and support comes from DIVERSITY.
• LOBBYING happens outside the boardroom and is led by vision not problems.
• RISE ABOVE IT ALL: Stay focused on what you want to achieve and don’t sweat the
small stuff

• LEAN OUT: Know when to leave, knowing when to stay.
• LEAN IN: Knowing when to lean in – the moment I leaned out when I didn’t
have to.
• Its all a negotiation.
This book has a big
impact on my view of
work
Look at your to do list
and think about how you
can lead and do one or
two things very well.
Delegate the rest.
(keep the vision alive and worth it)

you will lead

"I'm convinced of two fundamental truths about human beings. The first is that we
all have within us a centered place of wisdom, harmony and strength. Every
great philosopher and religion refers to it in some shape or form. The second
truth is that we are all going to veer away from that place again and again. That's
the nature of life. In fact, we may spend more time off course than on. The
question is how quickly we can get back to that centred place of wisdom,
harmony and strength. It's in this sacred place that life is transformed from
struggle to grace, and we are filled with trust, whatever our obstacles,
challenging, or disappointments.
Thrive, Arianna Huffington
It means failure.
It means showing you care.
It means making work, work for your life.
It means anticipating and understanding change.
It means knowing when to walk away and when to stay.
It means communicating effectively with vision-led intent.
It means growing, fostering and building diverse networks.
It means never using the word sacrifice and admitting this is a life you choose.
It means making a conscious effort to support other women. Become the first follower!
It means being at peace with the over-whelming feeling of responsibility because you’ve got this.
So, what does it mean to be a female leader today? (IMHO)

Why women are opting out of the demands and responsibility that leadership brings. Source: Caliper Dec 2014 We constantly seek to harmonise the world around us

  • 34. "I'm convinced of two fundamental truths about human beings. The first is that we all have within us a centered place of wisdom, harmony and strength. Every great philosopher and religion refers to it in some shape or form. The second truth is that we are all going to veer away from that place again and again. That's the nature of life. In fact, we may spend more time off course than on. The question is how quickly we can get back to that centred place of wisdom, harmony and strength. It's in this sacred place that life is transformed from struggle to grace, and we are filled with trust, whatever our obstacles, challenging, or disappointments. Thrive, Arianna Huffington
  • 35. (IMHO)

Notes de l'éditeur

  1.   Hi I’m Louise As the program says; I am currently Chief Strategy Officer of Mediacom NZ.   Can you guess which one I am in the photo? I’m the one in the hat and the baby on my lap   On paper, I have made a career out of crafting communication strategies for clients that consider all forms of communications, channels and audiences.   You can imagine that the only constant in this has been the change. I was called a cast member at one point in my career and a communication architect in another.     I have worked overseas in Canada and Australia and having started my career here, I went on to found New Zealand’s first dedicated communication strategy agency. My work has been recognized in both global and local media awards across clients that include The Coca Cola Company, Fonterra, Tourism Sydney and Walt Disney.   Even though I didn’t plan to work in advertising (lawyer) and have attempted to leave once already (I trained as a kids yoga teacher) I still get a buzz from solving business solutions with remarkable creativity. A great idea still gives me goosebumps. I’m in it for the positive cultural change that advertising brings. Sometimes!
  2. But what of my leadership credentials?   Leadership is such a loaded word, full of images of women in suits and men at boardroom tables. I prefer the Dr Suess versus. To be honest, the very thought of giving this speech made me question whether I was in fact portraying leadership qualities to those around me because to me I feel like I am running so fast just to keep up, make everything work and enjoyable for everyone in my life. I barely feel like I get a chance to lead. But of course I must be, otherwise I would probably be fired by now. I did actually check in with a few colleagues and ask them if they thought I was a leader. Most of them laughed at the mere notion I had to ask.  But the truth is that’s not how I feel on the inside, at least 30% of the time.   I feel like I graduated from University, went clubbing in London with some mates, learnt to snowboard in Canadian waist deep powder with my future husband, had two kids and somehow woke up here a few weeks back wondering how I got a career, a fancy job title and being asked to give a speech on leadership.   But this is what the data on female leaders says…women ‘confess’ they only got the job through luck or a break/ or mentoring from someone Whereas men say they worked hard, I deserve it, I earnt it.
  3. So I describe where I am at…is on the edge of leadership Leading with minimal responsibility because I am juggling so much. One step from jumping off and on I’ve only just begun and I have so much still to learn No chest beating No bad suits Keeping a wide view on everything from one step back Because being in the thick of it, often doesn’t give me the vantage point that I need to lead. Because its hard to lead, when we get caught up in the doing. In fact sometimes I think I swing from being a lone nut…to a follower and that’s why I want to share this video from Derek Shivers…how to start a movement
  4. Congratulations to all of you for being here. You wouldn't if your managers and companies didn't see the potential in all of you to be leaders. You already have created belief in others that you have what it takes to lead. So lets not ask, are you a leader, but can we help you lead and personally thrive So look around. Check each other out. The women here today might lead the country, TVNZ or the next entrepreneurial startup. Often when I attend these kind of speaker series, I think to myself: what is the one thing that I took from this speech that will shape how I view the future. Id like to ask you all to pose this question to yourselves and I’d love to share them at the end.
  5. Do we realise what amazing leaders we are? Seriously if we were a piece of software the factory would not be able to keep up with demand Credit suisse looked at 2360 companies globally over six years. They found that companies with one or more women on their board – saw a return on equity average 16% higher than those that had none and a growth rate 4% higher than those that had none. Recent work in Australia by Goldman Sachs Jbwere in an Australian context show that the closing the gap between men and women has contributed to a 22% increase in GDP, and further closing that gap, we would see an increase of 11% A report by McKinsey & Co shows gender-balanced executive committees have a 56 per cent higher operating profit compared to companies with male-only committees A comprehensive study by Zenger and Folkman surveyed 7280 leaders. At every level, women were rated higher in overall leadership effectiveness than their male counterparts, with the greatest gap evident at the highest executive levels. The leaders were also rated on 16 core competencies top leaders exemplify. Not only did women excel at "nurturing", such as developing others and building relationships, but at all levels, women rated higher in 12 of the 16 competencies that comprise outstanding leadership. Moreover, two of the traits where women outscored men to the highest degree - taking initiative and driving for results - have long been considered to be particularly male strengths. Decision-makers are beginning to notice, too, the growing body of academic research proving that gender-balanced leadership teams perform more effectively. .
  6. We have the money to influence the world economy and there is a ground swell of women coming through behind us.
  7. Or we might not. Drawing on 5,404 interviews in 35 economies, the 2015 results reveal that the proportion of senior business roles held by women globally has dropped from 24% back to 22%, the long-run average. Seven of the top eight best-performing economies are in Eastern Europe, led by Russia while Japan, Germany and India remain at the bottom. NZ While women make up nearly 50 per cent of New Zealand's workforce, only 9.3 per cent of board directors in New Zealand are women. It will be another 35 years before we reach equality in the boardroom. According to the latest research from Grant Thornton's International Business Report, women hold 28 per cent of senior management positions, the same as 2012 but down from 32 per cent in 2011 and still behind the 2004 level of 31 per cent. Reinforcing these trends is the fact that last year, 26 per cent of businesses had no women in senior management and this year that figure has risen to 30 per cent. Workforce participation by women of child bearing age in NZ is low compared with OECD norms; provision of high quality and convenient childcare in a priority
  8. We have to accept and acknowledge that we judge females harsher and in different ways to our male leaders. We must stop this. Accept female failure, bad shoes and her need to delegate Harvard study One leader, described as a man, then as a female, identical bio, whilst both sexes thought the female would be god at her job, neither group wanted to work for the female.
  9. In a recent study with Bauer magazine 94% of women agree they put everyone else's needs ahead of their own.
  10. Turning leaders into manages and manages into leaders is a multi-billion dollar business. Can it be done? https://www.americanexpress.com/us/small-business/openforum/articles/3-things-that-separate-leaders-from-managers/ Where you stumble that’s where your treasure lies
  11. I wanted to talk about the responsibility that we might all feel. Because it is in our nature to do it all and the over-whelming feeling that you can’t take on anymore otherwise you might crush under the weight of it all. I get this. And this personally stands in my way. From the minute I had to walk my 5 years younger kid sister to school, whilst she dawdled and checked out the bugs and cracks along the way, I have felt the burden of responsibility and being in charge. Which is silly, but not something I can rationally control –its my immediate reaction. To be a leader, often means setting the vision and intent, then standing back and letting those around you take the reins and make it their own. I wonder whether other women struggle with this? So they do it themselves, so that it is done exactly how they want it. Often the looks like Martyrdom and I see it in some form in pretty much all of my girlfriends lives. “ Might as well do it myself” Its very hard to be a leader when you are being a martyr. Start leading, by sharing the responsibility of the doing. Still to the vision, not the detail. You cant do everything! It is pretty much a given that someone will do something different from you. This plays out in my life a lot. I constantly make the effort to reset the vision and intent of our work amongst the teams that I work with. This doesn’t mean the vision is fixed, it can be built upon, and adapt over time to the shifting sands. But don’t get caught in expecting people to follow your instructions to the letter. This is management, not leadership.
  12. I pay for a cleaner every week. Its done and my head can be where it needs to be when I am home, not buired in an oven cleaning but with my family enjoyng our home and having fun, even when that involves completely messing up the house. There needs to be mess and fun in a house. Accept it and move on. If you don’t get a cleaner, don’t look and don’t lie in bed at night angry with everyone for making a mess.
  13. Husbands do not have the same heads as ours, they have their own needs and goals and that’s a good thing. There is the classic line, that when surprise guests announce they are popping over in 10 minutes, the husband looks in the fridge for beer and the wife cleans the toilet. Both are good things to do –but don’t you wish you didn't’t think about the toilet! Ask Be thankful Gratitude and acknowledgment goes a long way, but accept it most likely wont come back to you. Be satisfied that you have a great working relationship and achieve all that you are. It could be much worse. And if all else fails, when you cant stand it, phone a girlfriend and have a vent, its seriously not worth it on the home front.

  16. Roselinde Torres is a senior partner and managing director at the consulting firm, BCG. A senior leader in the firm's "people and organization" practice area, she is also the company's resident expert on leadership, a topic she has studied her entire career. Where are you looking to anticipate change? Read, converse, travel, talk…see around corners and shaping our future What is your diversity measure of your networks? Develop relationships with people that are very different from you. More solutions, Are you courageous enough to abandon a practice that made you successful in the past Great leaders are risk task Build the emotional stamina that your idea is reckless or stupid Often it’s the people not like you that will support you
  17. Bosses Use reference to Andrew leaving his wife. Thought it was company knowledge. Was passed back to him. Our relationship never recovered. 2 years later he made me redundant because he didn't’t trust me. Women tend to want to prove to bosses that they can do what has been asked and they don’t need help to do it. They over promise, don’t check in
  18. Employ broadly, ensure a mix of skills, backgrounds Mark Zukerberg is now focused on meeting a wide range of people from Politicians, corporate heads, actors as well as his Friday town hall meetings where he talks candidly to staff
  19. A moment when I should have left: 2 years of my life working for someone that I didn't’t get along with. They were the CEO, I was their Head of Strategy. We should have been thick as thieves but I made him nervous as hell and he was completely introverted. Everything I did was miscontrued. Should have left. A moment when it was right to stay: company reduced in size from 130 to 25, I was number 26. Sticking it out meant I could take a 6 month sabbatical touring south east Asia with my kids. Knowing when to leave, can actually be how you manage your home and work life. The fact is, if you don’t have flexibility in your work, you will struggle to make you home life work for you – at least when you have children. Create flexibility in your life. Most of the time, I am running around like a crazy lady. So I don’t need the guilt of feeling like I have let people down, or not doing this, or doing that. An observation I made early on in my career, is that it was only the women in senior positions that apologied for being late, never the men and no one was ever offended my them, if fact it was just assumed he was doing something important and valuable for the team anyway. My advice, set the expectations when a meeting is booked that you have have only x amount of time. If you expect to be more than 15 minutes late, send a message but otherwise don’t sweat it. Turn up to the meeting, contribute and move on. Leaned in: started a job the day I found out I was pregnant with my second child. I had leaned out before I began and remained for my 9 month tenure. Funnily enough my boss loved me and would have done anything to have me back. I should have negotiated my maternity cover and leaned in. making a call later on.
  20. Leadership is over glorified. Maybe I’m a follower? Derek shivers: how to start a movement Followers don’t follow the leader, the follow other followers Make a conscious effort to follow and back women that look like lone nuts
  21. Value of the first meeting to communicate your vision and intent Email: zip it if its long put it in a presentation deck, never reply late, if someone dissagrees with you in a email, book a meeting for at least 24 hours later if you can help it (Nigel Douglas MD ‘Yup’) The value of one to one meetings Off site –women don’t lunch because we are too busy I once had a meeting in an oxygen bar
  22. If there is one thing I want you to take away from today – it is this – lead by letting go of the doing.
  23. And be kind to yourself and others, because as arianna Huffington put it….
  24. Helping women is a virtuous circle
