Introduction
The category of fellowship depends on the depth
of understanding and practice of learning,
teaching and assessment and scope of leadership
you have demonstrated.
The SAR currently doesn’t support the Principal
Fellowship option.
However the SALT team can advise and support
you in your direct application to the HEA.

I can gain Senior Fellowship because
I’ve worked in HE for 15 years
The Areas of Activity are the most
important. I only need to talk about my
experience in relation to them.
If I use the HEA format, I’ll be OK to
submit my application like that
29. The application review process
Stage 1
Administrative checks – for
complete evidence, word
limits
Stage 2
Assessor Review – by at least 2
assessors (a 3rd external assessor for
Senior Fellowship applications)
Stage 3
Review and Ratification by SAR and
then the IT@S Panel

31. How will I be informed?
You’ll be notified via letter of the IT@S Panel
decisions.

Feedback on your application will then be
released via Pebble+

Successful - HEA Fellowship certificate.
Unsuccessful - review the feedback, contact

What
Happens
Next
33. • Applications should relate to the positive impact on student
learning
• At D3 (Senior Fellowship) the individual must show
sustained record of success/achievement
• Applications should evidence successful engagement with
appropriate dimensions of UK PSF
• Applications should not be based on role, job description
or status of individual
• Outcomes, impact and influence (and reflection of evidence
of same) much more important than role activities per se
General Principles of Successful
Applications

Strengths and
Weaknesses of
Applications
35. Strengths of Good Applications
• Written in the first person – YOU, YOUR EXPERIENCE, YOUR IMPACT
• convey enthusiasm for/commitment to teaching and enhancing the
student learning experience
• provide specific examples, particularly where different approaches have
been adopted to suit different student needs
• draw upon an informed understanding of pedagogy
• evidence creativity in teaching, learning & student support
• exhibit a student-centred disposition;
• show evidence of the constructive alignment of the UK PSF in their role
• articulate the synergy between research, scholarship and professional
activities with their teaching and their students’ learning experiences;
• show clear evidence of active, ongoing CPD
36. • descriptive of activities rather than reflective of approaches used
• lack a rationale for approaches adopted
• lack examples of effective practice and how this effectiveness is
demonstrated
• rarely mention the students’ learning experiences
• overly brief
• lack structure and focus
• rarely mention the UK PSF and/or ignore important aspects of the
framework (e.g. professional values, core knowledge);
• written in the 3rd person and/or a general account of their experience
of teaching and learning.
36
Weaknesses
37. The Assessment Criteria
The Fellowship Categories handout describes the various
category requirements…BUT, submissions also assessed
against the general principles:
• Clear evidence of your impact on the student learning
experience
• A personal account, demonstrating your commitment to
learning and teaching
• A reflective account, demonstrating your actions in terms
of improving my teaching, learning or assessment
practice and/or impact on others

Welcome
If you are viewing live: We will be having a break to do a short activity. Please watch the screen – the link will be there for you to access the materials that I’m talking through. They’ll be highlighted in red or wherever possible a QR code if you have a reader.
Also, you can email questions to me at salt@swansea.ac.uk – one of my colleagues will bring these to me to ensure we go through.
At the end there’s a short quiz for you to complete, following which, if you pass, you’ll get access to the Pebblepad platform.
I’m using it to help me focus on areas I need to spend more time on during future sessions.
If you are watching this via e-stream, please do not email or call me live as the lines have closed. And, an amazing Rugby World Cup final wasn’t it?
Refer to handout and remind online viewers
K6 – if you’ve been involved in module review, in a Board of Studies, in a validation or periodic review, looked at NSS results, m DLHE, include formative feedback or change your approach in according to University requirements
V4 – you don’t work in a bubble. Developments in research and practice impact what you do. Latest development, news, employability, changes in the economy etc. may all influence what and how you teach.
Mention the Descriptors

But respect academic integrity
You used to be able to apply directly to the HEA.
Don’t look at the guidelines etc on the HEA Website. Its no longer applicable now we have the internal route. You may find you write the Reflective Account differently.
You are responsible for contacting and getting your references.
At least 1 should be an employee of the University.
Preferably, at least one of your referee should have Fellowship of the HEA at least at the category you are applying for.
Your referee can be your line manager and/or mentor
Recently retired staff (e.g. within last 6 months) can be your referee.
The requirements are outlined in the other handout
I don’t have time to go into using Pebblepad. I will need you to confirm what route and to what deadline you wish to apply.
You can use the Word templates and copy and paste.
I will follow up with those who attend or those that complete the quiz with more details and a link to a fictitious example.
If by presentation, its upload the presentation at the same time and we’ll arrange a mutually convenient date and time to hold this.
ALL material submitted at the same time.
IT@S – the overarching term for Inspiring Teaching at Swansea – the byline encompassing the SAR, the two PGCerts that lead to HEA Fellowship and also the range of other CPD that SALT will be putting on.
Proceed – recommendation to the IT@S Panel.
Clarify – minor revisions. Probably achievable within a few weeks, and would encourage to resubmit ASAP or to next submission deadline.
No penalty for not doing that though. You can submit as many times as you wish.
Return – more substantial revisions are required.
Assessors may also indicate if you should apply for a different category of Fellowship; but a ‘fall-back’ Fellowship isn’t possible.
No appeal process
You can resubmit any number of times.
We don’t have any considered yet, so I can’t share with you. However, when I’ve enrolled you on Pebble+, you will be able to see a fictitious example and also successful examples direct to the HEA.
When I have more, I can share, however be warned about academic integrity.
UK PSF – we expect there to be cross-referencing throughout the account/signalling of it within the presentation
Your application is based on what you are able to demonstrate in relation to the UK PSF and for Senior Fellowship your influence of others
We’ll watch a video of strengths and weaknesses. You have these on your handout and also they are on our website.
We’ll be back in 5 minutes.
The category requirements are outline din this Handout
These are outlined at the
end of the Word application
and Pebble+ Applicant Checklist,
they are part of the Assessment Rubric.
I will need to ask you via email to register what deadline you want to apply for.
Referees – important that these aren’t just – he/she is a good egg, but of clear reference to your work and level of impact in relation to the UK PSF.
You must submit the references – not after your application.
You’ll also get a follow-up email with links to example of Pebble+ application etc.
