The Sala family furnished and decorated the second level of the Starfish Center in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic. Their daughters did the interior design. The space will be used to house humanitarian volunteers. The Sala family also helped families in need by providing furniture, food, and home repairs. They furnished the home of a teacher to help her family with medical costs.

2. We would like to give a huge thanks to Shaina and Sonny Sala and their family for furnishing
and beautifying our Starfish Center. The Salas own an operate a large furniture store
(ShowHome Furniture) in Calgary, Alberta. The second level of our Center will be rented out
to people who are coming to do humanitarian work through the foundation. All the proceeds
will stay in the community to employ people and for operational costs of the center. Their
daughters Maria and Lease did the interior design. It is so beautiful!!

6. In addition to furnishing
our Starfish Center, the
Sala Family blessed
many others in and
around Puerto Plata.
This single mom with two daughters lives in quiet desperation. She
received a carload of food and upcoming repairs to the home will be
happening soon. Thank you to those who come and serve in the
community helping those in great need!!

7. On their short visit to Puerto
Plata, Sonny and Shaina Sala
went out into the countryside
to meet Alise who is the
teacher at our Flamingo English
School. She teaches in her
home.
Alise’s husband Raul has kidney
disease and is on dialysis 3
times a week. Their meager
income is eaten up with
medical expenses.
Upon seeing their living
conditions, the Salas planned a
wonderful surprise. The next
day when Alise got home, she
found beautiful new furniture
filling their living/dining room!
What a blessing for them!!

8. The Palmer family from Canada
and United States delivered 250
Days for Girls kits in communities
in and around Puerto Plata. They
also brought cute hair accessories
made by volunteers from home.

9. Tonya and Chad Greiner

Elias and his
family.
Elias's health problems began 13 years ago in 2009. One day
he got up and couldn't walk. He went to the doctor. They
found some herniated discs in his back. A very unsuccessful
surgery followed leaving him unable to walk.
Elias then lost his job and could no longer care for his family.
Neighbors and friends have been helping. These same
neighbors and friends have pleaded with Dominican Starfish
Foundation to help him. The foundation of his home is very
unstable and could crumble at any time. The walls are
cracked, the floor is cracked, the roof is leaking. Any day
there could be a disaster.

13. Things are getting desperate for the Pimenter Family. Their landlord has evicted them so he
can fix his home that is falling. The family have no money and no place to go.
It took years for them to save enough money to buy their little plot of land. Now they would
love to build a home for their family, but it would take many more years before that could ever
be accomplished. The neighbors seeing their terrible conditions came to Dominican Starfish
Foundation to ask for help. The father Jose Duran is a construction helper. He earns about
$10 per day if he can find work. The Mother, Satia Gisel is ill and can't work. She is needing a
surgery. They have two daughters, Zaida and Yadelin.
The people around them feel so badly for them and are trying to get help for them. Several
Neighbors have volunteered to help with the construction. They have even been trying to
raise money for the family.

14. Education
The Greiner family has sponsored
Clarens in his quest to become a doctor.
He has now graduated from medical
school and is doing his residency in
Santiago.
Clarens has been the organizer for the
hairdressing school and the
manicure/pedicure course taught in his
home in his community. He has a passion
to help the impoverished around him
become more self-sufficient.

15. We continue to sponsor around 50
children in the Youth Upliftment
School. In January we have been
helping to raise funds for a hot lunch
program. We applied and received
approval for a grant from the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for
the equipment needed.
Several of our donors have also
helped raise funds for the food.
Sheila Layton who is a member of our
board in Canada raised money to
purchase lots of food when we are
there. Thanks to many who donated
through her! Her sister Kathy from
Vegas who is joining us on our
upcoming trip also raised funds to
help with this too.

16. We love our teacher, Alise and
the wonderful work she is doing
in our Flamingo English School.
Not only does she teach the
children, she also loves them
and gives them experiences
they could never otherwise
have, such as the January
Birthday Party shown below!!
