12. 第二章:在學慈心
oIn our culture, we use love to mean passion or sentimentality.
在我們的文化中,我們用愛來表示激情//熱情或感情。
oPassion: feelings of desire 慾望的感受, of wanting 想要的,
or of owning 自己的 and possessing 擁有-conditional 有條
件 and with expectation 期待 and want 需要. Else it’s
dukkha. 不然就受苦。
oSentimentality感情, an ally of delusion 妄想的盟友,
experience of pleasure 樂趣的體驗, fear of pain 害怕痛苦,
cannot accept things the way they are 不接受事實的真相.
oMetta: unconditional, open, and unobstructed
慈心:無條件、開放、 沒有阻礙。
13. 佛陀教慈心的原因
oAs an antidote to fear 抵消恐懼
oA group of monks was sent to meditate in the forest,
inhabited by tree spirits who caused problems.
oThe monks went to the Buddha begging to go to a different
forest. But the Buddha told them to go back and provide
them the “protection” which is the metta meditation.
14. oWhen a mind is filled fear, it can be penetrated by loving-
kindness.

oWhen we practice metta , it overcomes the illusion of
separateness: alienation, loneliness, and despair.

pleasures and pains.

oBuddha 佛說: The mind is naturally radiant and pure.

16. oA mind, filled with love, can be likened to the sky with clouds
moving through it-some light and fluffy, others ominous and
threatening. No matter what the situation, the sky is not affected
by clouds.

(love and wisdom), but can never destroy the mind.

17. oMetta is likened to a gentle rain that falls upon earth. Rain
doesn’t select or choose (here, not there). It simply falls
without discrimination.

oMetta also means a true friend who doesn’t abandon you
when you are in need.

someone who is more deserving of your love and affection
than you are yourself, and that person is not to be found

20. oOur potential to love is very real and is somehow not
destroy, no matter what we experience:

21. oFor a true spiritual transformation, we must see beyond this
tendency to mental self-flagellation.

oWhen we see the goodness in others, we are enabling them
to “flower from within, of self-blessing.”

22. oIf we focus on the negative, we will naturally feel anger,
resentment, or disappointment.
